Black Diamond Raptor Crampon
The Black Diamond Raptor Crampon bolts directly to your boot to give you a level of ice and mixed climbing performance unavailable with standard crampons. A removable heel spur helps you tackle the steepest roofs around, or you could always take it off and go bareback if hooking isn't your style. The Black Diamond Raptor Crampon isn't for the casual weekend ice climber. This is the choice for serious mixed climbers who would rather be scratching around on rock than swinging into plastic fantastic.
Bottom Line: The bolt-on Black Diamond Raptor Crampon makes the steepest terrain feel like a ladder.

Raptor on old climbing shoe

Immediately after reading how to make my own 'fruit boots' in latest issue of Rock and Ice, I got my Raptors from BC. Mounted them today on a 34 yr. old pair of leather Vasque Ascenders. These are a very stiff, full leather early climbing shoe. Not too warm for winter, but should work for wild mixed climbs or comp use. The Raptors fit firm and rigid on these shoes. Lightweight, yet strong enough to give some ankle support. Can't wait until I get some ice to freeze up out here in Illinois. They work fine on an indoor Ice Holdz wall. A pair of gaiters will help protect the top from snow and water. Sure beats buying a $600 pair of psycho boots that only get used a few times each year.
Raptors rock!

Here's another shot of the Raptors I mounted to an old pair of leather climbing shoes. Rigid enough to do front points and steeps. Look forward to getting on real ice instead of an indoor plastic ice route.
Change me.
