Black Diamond Moonlight Headlamp - 2005

The Black Diamond Moonlight Headlamp lights up the night with four LEDs that provide over 70 hours of burn time. Black Diamond stepped it up in terms of technicality—with the addition of a computer chip, you can now regulate the intensity of the LEDs or place the lamp in "strobe" mode. Use this mode in emergency situations or as a beacon to guide you back to base camp. Weighing just 3.2 ounces, you'll never leave it behind. You know the scenario - you're packing up for a day hike and not planning to be out past dark. Should you throw in a headlamp or not? With the Moonlight you don't have to worry about carrying excess weight for something you might not need. And if you do get caught out after dark, the Moonlight provides 15 meters of usable light, which is more than enough to find your way home. A tilt housing allows you to direct your light source where needed, while the adjustable headband fits over helmets or beanies.

Bottom Line: The Black Diamond Moonlight Headlamp shines a big light in a compact little package.

A Step Up from Ultra-Minimalist LED Lamps

By:
July 15, 2003

Heavier and bulkier than the more minimalist LED headlamps, but you get a more secure strap system, an easily adjustable angle, and an extra LED. Only downside is that it’s possible to snap the batteries in the compartment in a way that seems secure, but actually will cause the light to flicker or not work at all.

The best all LED headlamp

By:
April 27, 2003

The Moonlight is the right headlamp choice for low light tasks like setting up a tent, reading in the tent, camp cooking, hiking in the dark, bar-b-q-ing in the backyard, changing a flat tire, and a million others. The tiltable head is a must-have feature. One set of batteries will last me an entire summer of camping. Great as gifts, and if all your friends have Moonlights, you won’t have to have the harsh light of camp lanterns diluting your campfire glow.

Great Headlamp

By:
January 2, 2003

I have owned this lamp for a while now and I love it. Lightweight, durable and very small. I put it in my pack even if I don’t think I’ll need it. What’s a few extra ounces? This lamp will not replace a headlamp with a regular beam but I have used it to hike a few miles in the dark and it was fine. There is no better headlamp for around camp, your car and for those "maybe I need a headlamp" situations. The only problem you will have with this headlamp is keeping your friends from stealing it.

Excellent

By:
November 12, 2003

I am a Blackhawk pilot with the 101st Airborne Division here in Iraq. I ordered this light and in eight days received it in seven days here in northern Iraq. That is the best service I have seen over here yet! The light is very lightweight and comfortable. It works excellent for all purpose use at night. The dim settings and beacon mode are great as well. Thank You

long battery life

By:
July 8, 2004

These are perfect if long battery life is a factor. The brightness level is still very good, but not quite as much as the Zenix. But you can't have everything. Fit well and are very lite.
Perfect for around the campsite and walking. For trail running, I would go for the Zenix.

Bdel Moonlight

By:
October 7, 2004

This is a nice headlamp. It's relatively cheap and provides over 100 hours of use before the batteries need replacing. I bought it because this was the lamp Mammoth Cave issued to it's Wild Cave tour-goers. It provides a very nice floodlight, however if you're looking for anything that remotely resembles a beam or if you get scared easily in the middle of the night, look for another lamp. The Zenix by Bdel provides a nice beam with their focused LED and still gives quite a few hours of use with 3 AAA's and also includes two LEDs for floodlighting.

Headlamps, led type.

By:
February 18, 2003

I purchased two of the new LED headlamps recently and couldn't be happier. I work on military helicopters in all kinds of weather and at all times of the day. These headlamps make it possible to use both hands to work on the aircraft but still have the ability to see what I'm doing. I bought two of them, one for me, and one for another technician. We both wouldn't trade them for all the flashlights in China. Thanks, Tom

Safety First

By:
February 25, 2003

As a runner safety is my first concern. There are many streets and trails where street lights are not available. It's been a great aide a few times and people have thanked me for bringing it along. I no longer have to carry a flashlight in my waste sack and the light intensity is fantastic. Don't know how I've lived without one for so long. Many of my running partners will be purchasing some soon!

FANTASTIC Headlamp

By:
July 7, 2003

Bought this as a gift for my husband…the guy who works in his shop, goes camping, and is a volunteer fireman. He LOVES it! The headlamp is super bright and very light. He wears it while working on cars, setting up camp at night, or on nighttime fire scenes. The LED lighting will last forever. Headband is easy to use. EXCELLENT product for the price!

No Moonshadow here.

By:
August 18, 2003

I have a crew of 7 that work focusing lights on towers late into the night. The towers are up to 50' tall, with platforms at multiple elevations. Other than what you bring with you, there is no other source of light for the work space. Mag lights were cool, but a pain to hold in your hand, teeth, or on the headband. They burned up lamps and batteries quickly. The Moonlight Headlamp is fantastically suited for what we are doing. Wherever you look, there is the light, on your work. No lamp burnout, batteries last forever, and the weight on the head is less than the Mag. We are starting to use them now in lowlight situations like attics and catwalks as well. Every crew person we work with wants to know how to get their own.

Great sturdy and lightweight headlamp

By:
March 8, 2004

I am notoriously hard on gear... everything I take out to the backcountry must be "Tonka Tough", often time at the expense of weight. Not so this time, the LEDs are actually tougher than my full size headlamp, which has turned out to be overkill on most of my excursions. This light packs up nicely and provides ample light for midnight bathroom trips, rustling around with a tent after dark and also handy when working on my '81 Land Cruiser. I keep a spare in my truck for those "just in case" emergencies.

Like Moon Light

By:
March 8, 2004

The headlamp is great. Good for close work, at a larger distance it really is like moon light-- it gives a cool, blue-ish light. I got it for night time XC skiing. Have found I don't use the lower light settings though-- for my purposes, knowing what I know now, if I had a choice between this and a cheaper headlamp with just an on-off switch, I'd go in that direction.

product short

By:
March 18, 2004

I use this headlamp because I jog at 5am. I've had it about a year and the wire going into the battery pack has a short. I'm going to buy a new one because it is so useful. $30.00/year, not too bad to see well while jogging in the early morning.

Moonlite led Great, However

By:
March 18, 2004

I bought one to use mostly for reading and detail hobby/craft work. A Super Tool for this kind of work. It is bright and well made EXCEPT for a few things. The battery box is located on the back and it bothers my head when resting on a pillow reading in bed. It is a little difficult to remove the dead batteries. I use rechargable batteries and replace them about every two weeks or so as they won't last as long on a charge as a conventional battery. The battery box and wires are very sensitive and the light will flicker or go out often. It really pee's me off. I tinkered with wires and got it to work for awhile but then had to replace it. Secound unit did the same and now I need to replace it again. Was told that this is common complaint. It's really sad because I love the light. It is perfect for reading in bed as I can read while my wife sleeps as the light won't bother her. I will try one more new light and hopefully they have fixed this problem. If not, I am sure someone will design a light as good or better as they become more popular. This light would be a "10" if they would move the battery box to a more comfortable location and redesign the wiring so they don't short out. For now I will give it "8".

Great amount of light but it is significantly more bulky than a Tikka or similar headlamp. All that bulk doesn't mean more batteries or longer life, just bulk.

great investment In head gear and a great gift idea

By:
August 2, 2005

Last year I purchased the Black Diamond Moonlight Headlamp. It is so light and comfortable to wear I am not even aware that I have it on my head. It throws out an amazing amount of light. It has a strobe in case you might need it for signaling. I purchased it for use in the backcountry to upgrade a cheaper, bulkier headlamp. I can sleep very comfortably with it on my head. I was so pleased with it, I use it everywhere. It is one of the best investments I have ever made. I purchased a second one this year as a gift for my husband.

Okay for some things.

By:
July 26, 2006

I bought this headlamp because it was cheap. I intended to be able to use it to travel around my campsite or set up camp after sunset. In this function it performs great. Anything else (hiking, bicycling, etc.) you would definately want something a little brighter.

Good light, bad wireing

By:
March 14, 2005

I received this light as a gift. It has a cool look to it and the brightness is really good. But the wiring on mine began to fail only a month and a half after coming out of the package.

Pretty good

By:
August 16, 2005

So far I like it. I think it should have a lens cover on it though to preclude the LEDs from getting dinged or banged. I think that at some settings the lights should have more spread than they do. But overall, it’s better than my previous headlamp.

Great Headlamp

By:
March 10, 2006

Batteries last forever; Easy to operate switch (even with gloves); Switch protected from accidental activation; Provides enough light to hike or jog confidently; Very lightweight; Dim setting(s) for reading, etc.; Small enough for pocket or glove box. Battery cable barely makes it around some helmets (you may have to offset the battery pack from center rear); Uncomfortable on head while laying down to read since the battery pack is in the rear. On helmets, I've resolved the battery cable issue by shortening the cable to 3", mounting the battery pack to the front of the helmet with a small piece of shock-cord and attaching the headlamp with 3M exterior grade tape. It's lasted 3-1/2 years so far with no problems. You won't be disappointed with this headlamp. Of seven different types of headlamps I've tried, these are the best. I now have five of them.

Great light - Poor Wiring

By:
May 9, 2006

I love this light, but have the same wiring problems others report. Touching the wire near the battery pack causes it to flicker or go out. I've tinkered with it, but haven't been able to fix the problem.

Battery type makes a difference with the Moonlight Headlamp

By:
April 14, 2006

I get very reliable and satisfactory service with Duracell batteries in this unit. If I substitute batteries without insulation on the sides (usually one of the cheaper brands), I have sometimes have trouble with the light flickering on and off when the wire moves in certain directions. Whether this is the insulation, differences in battery dimensions, or variations in quality of electrical contacts is not immediately clear. However, moving the battery case wire may cause a very small movement in the two contacts in the case soldered to the wires.

Great Performing Lightweight Headlamp at a Great Price

By:
September 26, 2005

I have ordered and used two of the Black Diamond Moonlight headlamps over the past year, one for myself and one for my son, with 100% success. Mine has been to Santiago Peak, CA on a 12-hour day hike New Year's Day with three hours return in the dark, followed later this year by trips to Boundary Peak NV, Mt San Gorgonio CA, and finally Mt Whitney CA with my son and his fiancé over a three day period camping and hiking. In all cases the BD headlamps performed well with a wide angle, soft, adjustable light (I normally use it on the lowest setting) and outstanding energy efficiency as I have yet to change my first set of batteries. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a low weight, comfortable, cost effective, and energy efficient headlamp.
