Black Diamond Mega Light 4-Person Shelter

The Black Diamond Mega Light's SilNylon construction and simplistic design allow it to shelter four backpackers while only adding a mere 2lb 5oz to group weight. Unlike a crammed tent, the Mega Light provides 81sq feet of covered floor space and a roomy 57in height, so you have plenty of room when you need to wait out a storm. Use this Black Diamond shelter on a lightweight summer trip, or pitch it on the snow at base camp and dig out the floor to create a plush kitchen. The only thing that limits the Mega Light's use is your imagination.

Bottom Line: The Black Diamond Mega Light shelters four and weighs less than most bivy sacks.

Home away from home.

I have used this in so many situations over the last couple years. Some people feel more comfortable in a regular tent, but for me I love the minimalist feel of sleeping on grass or a beach or snow with just a roof over my head. So although its billed as a shelter or camp kitchen option, its really great for anything. And it sets up in a flash. Love it.

Circus Tent

This is really spacious but I feel like it might be tight for 4 people. It did a good job when dumped on with snow, but it made the walls cave in a bit and really reduced the amount of room inside. The reason it gets a 4 is because you have to seam seal it, I just think thats lame these days.

The Mega Light may fit four people, but with just two there is plenty of space for your kitchen, as well as to sleep.

When used with the Mega Floor, will this keep the bugs out? Or do you need the Mega Bug Shelter for that?

You will definitely need the bug shelter to "keep" the bugs out. The floor does not "zip" to the shelter - it ties - so there WILL be gaps between tent and floor. It's just like water, if a bug wants to get in any tent, it will find a way.

We loved the ease of erection... and take down was a snap too. No floor means dusty or dirty bags to clean when you get home. Looks cool with high sierra as backdrop.

Mega Light - Mega tight

By:
December 4, 2009

The mega light pitches easier than other multi-sided shelters out there and stays tighter. I only wish that BD had added storm flaps at the bottom, like the Kiva by MH. Otherwise, it's a great shelter!

Great Tent!

By:

This tent is pretty cool. First of all, it is incredibly light. Just a pole and the top. It is also very quick and easy to set up. I recommend purchasing the floor that goes with it, as it attaches to the top and actually pulls up from the ground, blocking water/bugs from getting in. They also make an adapter that connects 2 trekking poles together so you don't even need to take along the provided pole. This tent is Sweet!!

Mega Light

Great tent. Tarps make a good floor so you dont have to sleep in the dirt. If you're going to be camping in cold weather the tent does not vent well and condensation build up was an issue with three in the tent. Other than that there was no problems.

Versatile and super light-weight

By:
May 7, 2009

I know everybody loves their tent, but...I really love my tent. Why? It's ROOMY. My husband's 6'2" and he fits. I and three of my friends all fit in this tent. If it's just me, it's a palace. It pitches quick. It's easy to pitch over a variety of ground: bushes or rocks in the way? No problem with this tent. Pitching on granite or sand? No problem with this tent (stake the corners down with rocks). I've pitched it in howling storms: wind doesn't knock it down and rain doesn't get in. Your muddy boots will not soil this tent, 'cause it has no floor. You can set it up high to catch the breeze, or set it up low to keep rain from bouncing in...and when it's raining in the morning, you can pack all your stuff and get ready to roll while still in the tent, then quickly tear it down and go.

The only time I had water inside the tent was when I pitched it on an old roadbed and a thunderstorm broke out...the water could not soak into the compacted soil, and so ran along the surface and into the tent. My fault!

The only time I've experienced condensation inside this tent was when I and three friends (and our gear!) were trapped in it for an entire day of rain at Pt Reyes National Seashore. Then it got a little clammy.

Oh, I almost forgot! All this and only 2lbs in weight.
