The Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp makes a great backup lighting source for day trips and a main light for backpacking trips when you don't need a big spotlight. The three SuperBright LED bulbs provide usable light up to 14 meters, so you can easily pitch your tent on a pitch black night. The Gizmo Headlamp includes two brightness settings, so you can save battery powder for a 42-hour burn time when you only need close-up lighting. This Black Diamond headlamp weighs only 2oz with batteries and easily fits in your pocket.
Bottom Line: The Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp—lightweight backcountry lighting.
Nice light for the price. It won't light the roadway, but great for trail running on smoother trails, the batteries last plenty long enough for a full evening in the woods. Stays on the head nicely too, good purchase for 20 bucks!
This thing gets 4 stars from me not because it isn't a great deal, it's just not the end all - be all headlamp.
I have a Tikka XP that I use a lot, I picked the Gizmo up for my girlfriend to use on a recent hiking trip. I actually ended up using it a little bit too. This headlamp was perfect for what she needed it for- mainly wondering around camp in the evening, cooking, reading in the tent, etc. The headlamp puts off a good deal of light, it just doesn't travel very far, it's not a design shortcoming, it's just not designed to do that.
One thing I would't want to do is hike in the dark with the Gizmo, it doesn't have any sort of spotlight mode to watch for blazes on trees, or cairns on the ground. I go to my tikka XP for that.
If all you're looking for is a headlamp to cook with and wonder around camp, the Gizmo is an awesome deal and more than enough to get the job done. Just don't expect to light anything up that's very far away from you. All that said, I still may pick up an extra one just to keep in my car.
Hi' The plastic piece where the band threads through, and where the light pivots, has one of the "ears cracked," and can no longer hold the light fixture. Can this item be replaced?
We rent out these headlights throught he University of Alabama Outdoor Recreation and they have definetly withstood the beatings they have been administered. They have been used for caving, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, and even mountain biking. They are kinda like energizer bunnies.
Great headlight. You could easily go to a big chain store and by a piece of crap for twice what you pay for this. A lot of people have complained about the connection to the headband and how it might come off. I personally think that the connection is great, it can easily be transferred to your sternum strap of your pack if you don't like the headband deal like myself. Plenty of light and weighs nothing. Great buy!
Awesome light for kicking around the camp, finding the lav, or playing cards at night. I have a couple of these 'cause they are such a great price. I have one I keep in my tent, and another I keep in my just in case survival kit. Packs small, and is super durable, so I have no fear of it being trashed before I need it. AAA batteries keep it a small package, even with spares.
In two years my Gizmo has never let me down. It's bright enough for night hikes and has a second brightness setting that works well around camp or in your tent. It doesn't have a spotlight like the BD Spot or other lamps with 1-watt LEDs but I haven't come across a situation in which that has been a necessity for me.
Battery life has just been awesome for me. I spend 30 to 40 nights in a tent every year (and use it to grill all winter) and I've only replaced the batteries once or twice in the two years I've owned my Gizmo. A few people mentioned something about poor performance in the cold, but that's just how batteries work. Keep it in your pocket to keep it warm until you need some light and it will be fine. I've routinely used it in temps around 0 F without problems. If you need a headlamp for prolonged lighting in the cold buy one with a battery pack separate from the light... that's why they made them.
You can't beat it for $20 and most people don't need anything more than the Gizmo. If you need a spotlight, buy a spotlight. If you don't, get a Gizmo. Plus, it only weighs a couple of ounces with batteries. Score. There's a reason I recommend it to every customer at my store in need of a headlamp.
For the price, nothing is better. This headlamp has been getting me off rivers after sundown for a year now and is one of the best gifts I've ever recieved. I replaced the batteries after they ran out and it just keeps on ticking. Best used in small areas, cars, tent, hiking trails.
I don't like this headlamp at all. First of all, the light is detachable from the headband and often falls off. The light feels very cheap as well and its beam weak. Def worth $20 but wish i had put it towards something nicer. Now its just another spare...
Simple light for small areas like inside a tent or cooking, would not function well for anything you need a large area lit up. For that you'd be in for another $20 or so....
Let me agree with this first four of the reviews. This is a tough lamp to beat for the price. My first rule of headlamps is no specialty batteries. This achieves that goal with two AAA batteries, also helps keep the weight down. Press and hold on/off switch is a nice touch to prevent accidental turn on while stowing it. I have collection of head lamps, this is one will use most around the campsite. I do not play in the wettest of conditions, not sure how this one would hold up, does not seem to be very water tight. Bet you a nickel it will do just fine in a quick rain storm.
I'll never buy a regular flashlight again. This thing is good in all conditions, has all the settings I need, and is reasonably priced. It's also got an easy-to-use button that works great when you've got ski gloves on.
This is pretty much the best you can get for the price. I haven't had any problems with the light coming on accidentally, and it puts off a good amount of light. I'm glad it takes 2 AAA batteries to power, that makes it really convenient. You can get by leaving it on the low light setting and the batteries will last twice as long. Really great headlamp for the price.
I haven't used it yet, but it is really lightweight and bright. I like that it uses plain AAA batteries (and only two of them). I look forward to using it on my next trip to the Sierras.
Some of these things just do not deliver enough light to really use. This one does! I was able to roam through a sea of tents and avoid many tent stakes due to the good amount of light. Ability to pivot the unit was a big plus as well as good battery life.
I use the Black Diamond Gizmo Headlamp as my backup light for backpacking; I use the Black Diamond Icon Headlamp for night hikes & as my main light but for reading in the tent etc. the Icon can be too bright...so when I want to nerd up in the tent & read about leprechauns, fairies, wizards and such this is the light I use...it weighs nothing so why not bring it as a backup? Or if you're not very core (meaning for you a night hike is 1 mile from the car) this will be perfect as your main light (wimp, go for a real adventure!). :)
I took this headlamp with me when I went camping a couple weeks ago, and it was great! the elastic band fits well around my head and is super adjustable. It was sufficiently bright for camping too - wouldn't recommend it for any sort of treacherous night adventures though.
This lightweight headlamp works great around camp or around the house when you need both hands free. The thick, stretchy headband makes it comfortable to wear. This headlamp has different settings, so its perfect for night reading or lighting up things around camp. The LED gives you stellar battery life. You can't beat the price on this headlamp. If you're looking for a simple, inexpensive headlamp - this is your best bet.
"Adequate for the job" sums it up Black Diamond has quality headlamps and the Gizmo is no exception, It's not going to kill any gremlins but it will help you eat after midnight. It's a good Christmas gift also- Dude it's twenty bucks, quit being so cheap.
For the price this receives a 5, but I didn't give it a 5 because there are obviously better headlamps. This one is nice because it runs off of AAA batteries so they are easily replaced, and it seems to last a long time on those. We used these in some old tunnels in the rain forest. They lit up enough to see about 6 feet ahead of you, which was enough to walk, if you want a super bright headlamp don't get this one, if you want a water resistent headlamp at a low price that will be durable while taking adventures, then get this one.
I'd recommend this headlamp to anyone looking for a simple headlamp for camping etc. It isn't super bright, but for that same reason you aren't changing the battery very often. I also like how it doesn't have straps all over my head and there isn't a bulky battery pack on the back. One button design is nice- no bells and whistles. It gets the job done for a good price.
This little head lamp packs a lot of power for 19.90. I needed a light weight, small, cheap backup headlamp for my fishing box. This one definitely fits the bill. 3 led lights takes care of me when I need to hike, cook, play cards, read...you get the idea! I also like that this lamp takes AAA batteries instead of hard to find expensive coin batteries.
So i have used ALOT of head lamps and and I would have to say that the Black Diamond Gizmo is definitely up there as far as quality convenience goes. It puts off alot of light for such a light weight headlamp and it is pretty comfortable. So whether your going out for a midnight bouldering session, hike, or your just looking for lost keys in the car, the Gizmo is a great choice headlamp.
Used this lamp on our overnight hike across uneven terain. The reguar and bright setting are usefull for individual preferance. It is light and fits well.
I have another super bright light I use normally, but really wanted something for reading when camping or just in bed. The least bright setting is fine for reading and doing simple activities at night around the camp. It is light weight, easy to adjust and comfortable on my head. Not ideal for use on a helmet or for fast paced night time activities, but a fine alternative when you don't need an expensive, heavy light weighing your noggin down.
Really sweet lamp, and for the price I was really stoked. It's nothing amazingly fancy, but it works great in all weather. I haven't backpacked with it yet, but the light-weight nature will be great. It works for everything: flashlight in the shed, checking oil and tire pressure in the dark, even doing homework when my roommate is asleep. A great choice for sure.
The gizmo is my third headlamp and I am extremely happy with it. It is by far the most comfortable and the weight is great. The amount of light is perfect for trails, or around the campsite. An excellent find.
I have to say I had my doubts but this small headset gives off a lot of light. The adjustable settings also helps to save battery power. I was using a Black Diamond Ion Headlamp that just wasn't enough when you are in the deep woods but this one is great. For a simple headset this is great.
I haven't used this for camping yet but I've used is numerous times while working on my car and it works great. I think the three settings will be nice when i finally get outdoors. I'm sure there's nicer ones out there but that price is about the same as walmart and im sure this quality is better. Plus you get all the reviews from here, unlike walmart.
This lamp is great. Batteries are easy to replace, and it provides plenty of light when you are getting food ready, or trying to find your way around your site in the middle of the night. The dimming and tilting features come in handy, and although some have complained about the attachment to the headband, I never had any issues. Light, comfortable and inexpensive. Great deal.
this is a good light, nothing great, it doesn't put out that much light, but it is good for a backup or emergency light, it is really lightweight, and was pretty cheap, overall just a average headlamp, cheap, but does not put out a lot of light but has 3 different settings
The only draw back is the attachment to the headband. If the light is bumped the right way, it will fall off the headband. . . .Luckily the light is sturdy enough to endure a 10 foot fall into a rocky pool of water!
Provides adequate lighting for night hiking and camp activities.
It's pretty good. The only thing I dislike is that it's easy to knock the acutal lamp part off of the headband. I think it's good for the price though!
If you read my other review entitled "A Steal for 20 Bucks", you would see that I gave it a favorable review. Since then, though, I have used this thing in temperatures in the teens, and it just stops working. I sent it back to the manufacturer and the promptly sent me a new one. The new one did exactly the same thing. Very disappointing. So, if you are going out in the cold with this thing, don't expect it to work!
Ok, so your not going to be spotlighting out of a helicopter with it, but it is plenty bright to see around your campsite at night with it. It's lite-weight and durable, so I always carry it with me. I do like the fact that it runs on two AAA batteries, which are lite and store easy if you need to back some extra batteries. For twenty bucks, I don't see how you can beat it.
this is the greatest head lamp i have ever had props: light weight stretchy band easy to replace batteries and leds cheap bright high beam mode low beam mode blinking mode gripes: can be hard to turn off
