Make backcountry snow testing a little easier with the Black Diamond FlickLock Snow Saw. Not only does this 5.6oz snow saw have a comfortable handle for cutting the walls of your test pit, it also attaches to your ski poles for extra reach. Clip the FlickLock Snow Saw to any 11mm or 14mm telescopic ski pole section to extend it for cutting the back of a Rutschblock or dropping a cornice onto a suspect slope.
Bottom Line: Make cuts from a safe distance thanks to the Black Diamond FlickLock Snow Saw.
Nice saw but it didn't fit my BD probe poles.Had to make an adaptor for it to fit.Says fits two sizes of flicklock poles.Neither size opening matched my poles.Blade is a little bit sketch in firm snow so one must be careful not to overload and bend the blabe on the push stroke.
I can't seem to make this saw work with my BD Alpine CF poles. Am I doing something wrong, or will the saw just not work with the carbon fiber poles?MattBud - Do you have the Alpine CF poles or the CF poles? I haven't tried taking the handles off to insert into the saw. I was trying to put the lower section of the pole into the saw, and it doesn't fit. Thanks,Matt
Hmmmm... I have the CF poles and they work great in the smaller of the two holes, you take the carbon shaft out of the handle of the pole and insert it into the saw. You must make sure it is inserted all the way. If this doesn't help maybe you could elaborate more on the issue you are having.
Only issue with the saw itself is it's appetite for consuming the plastic inside the sheath. Otherwise I'm sure it's fine. Should be able to put it to use this winter when I take the JHMG Avi course level 1.
The bigger issue here is how the saw connects to the BD FlickLock poles. I can only connect it to the very bottom section of my BD Expedition poles (22" long). Since one of the uses for the saw is for cornice cutting, I know I'd certainly like to use the entire pole for this. 22" doesn't give you much unless you're on a mini mountain with mini cornices!
I like this saw for many reasons. Fits nicely in my pack, light weight, sturdy blade, great precision, compatibility with my BD poles. Its a great tool to help you perform accurate snowpack analysis. ***** 5 stars
Prior to purchasing this saw, I did some research on both this saw and the comparable alternatives (BCA Snowsaw, G3 Bonesaw). Based up research and prior use, the BCA snowsaw was definitely the flimsiest of the three saws. The G3 Bonesaw is actually also flimsier than the BD FlickLock saw, although in pictures it appears burlier. I thought the G3 Bonesaw was a little overpriced for a snowsaw as well. Due to reviews and strength, I went with this saw. For a snowsaw, it is lightweight and does not take up a lot of packspace. It does the job of cutting snow columns fine. My biggest gripes are as follows: (i) there is no hardguard and the handle is very small, so be careful when putting the snow in the sleeve; (ii) the blade is sharp and cuts the interior of the sleee, leading to little plastic bits getting in your bag (but who really cares about this); and (iii) MOST IMPORTANTLY, it is NOT compatable with my Flicklock poles. I have the BD Expedition FlickLock poles (from 1 year ago), and this saw does not fit into the attachment. I am sure I am using it properly, and my poles do not fit in either of the 2 differently sized attachment options on the saw. This is a major design flaw by BD. SUMMARY: If you want a sturdy, lightweight saw, this is the best choice over the BCA saw and the G3 Bonesaw. However, note that it may or may not be compatable with your BD poles. This is merely a minor inconveience to me - b/c when I used this to cut a exteneded column for a ECT test, I merely attached the saw to my pole using some voile ski carrying straps and it worked fine.
This piece does the trick. It fits in my pack well with my other avy tools and cuts when i need it to. havent had any problems with the flicklock attachment.
So the saw attaches to the lower half of the pole, and the handle you grip would be the end with the basket? Wouldnt it make more sense to attach to the upper half for a better handle? I suppose I could find an equal diameter piece of tubing (a union)that would join the saw with the upper half of the pole??Is the tension on the flick lock adjustable?
OK, but you still have the basket closest to your body if you are using your pole as an extension right? Im just thinking the area around the basket would make for a poor handle, especially when trying to cut a cornice...
I got this thinking, 'oh, a snow saw. I can use it for IGLOO building, but really it is, now I'm told, maybe too short and certainly, unless you're a child, the handleââwhich looks good in the picture, ain't much when you've got it in your hand. NOW I know that this is more of an Avalanche crust testing tool and not nec. for cutting big blocks of snowâââ;but I'll still give it a shot and hey, I looked pretty bad with it tucked in my pants around the city . . . thought for sure the cops would be stopping the crazed guy with the saw.
Great for attaching to Bd poles and other poles with the similar widths. Great for digging pits and everything else you use a saw for. Easy to use. I don't have any complaints about this saw.
