Black Diamond Express Ice Screws

The Black Diamond Express Ice Screws' unique taper reduces ice fracturing and eases placements. A large crank knob takes less fine motor skills to use than a small one, so you can place the Express Ice Screw when you're pumped like crazy and really need it. Black Diamond uses a stainless steel hanger to eliminate rusting and decrease sun-induced melt-out. Two carabiner holes make sketchy hanging belays easy to set up.

Bottom Line: Get fast, solid ice protection with the Black Diamond Express Ice Screws.

Almost perfect

BD's new Express screws are really good--but not phenomenal. The previous model had some issues like a gear hanger that tended to rust, and only one carabiner hole limited your options. These weren't huge issues, but it was good BD fixed all that when they came out with the Express. What I don't like about the express is ease of placement. BD changed up the tooth angle geometry (and I believe thread pitch as well, though not sure) in an effort to aid placement. I think the old Turbo Express screws placed faster and were easier to start one-handed. Other than that, great screws.

Black Diamond Express Ice Screws

By:

This is a great screw as expected from BD. It is super easy to place after you get it started. If you have the cash go for these but if not the BD Turbos rock. I have more Turbos on my rack then Express. When it comes down to cost it just makes way more sense when it only takes a few more seconds to place the Turbos.

Nice

These screws are really nice. They start easily and they place quickly too. I like the little knob for turning in the screw, it works well for the bulk of the turns. The double hanger for multiple biners is key.

One thing to watch out for with these screws is that the tips of the teeth are very easy to mess up, the steel is fairly soft and won't take much abuse.

Amazing!

Great screws for leading. Super fast screwing and it eats ice like it's its job! Wait? Love Black Diamond and this screw does the job perfectly. I do agree with the Laser Sonic reviewer, big gloves make it a little hard to screw in with the grinder knob, but the teeth eat really well anyway. 6 of one half a dozen of the other!

Express Ice Screw

By:

These are great screws. The thing I like most is that they bite quickly, which is the hardest part of the placement. The knob is kind of a joke, I always try to use it but often end up using the bolt hanger to twist the screw in. Dry them after use or they will rust. The 16 and 19cm are most useful.

Easy to handle, fits the budget

I have used similar products including Petzl Laser Sonic and Simond. BD express is the fastest to get in. The length of the handle is just perfect. No fumbling.

Very, Very Good.

These are some very fast screws. They bite into ice like butter and dig. The knob doesn't do a ton of good for me personally but I guess it functions to make the head just a little bigger for twisting. Take care of them and they'll take care of you.

"The" screw for you

By:
May 2, 2009

The screw for leading ice, all types, from brittle East coast crap to the fat blue ice of Ouray. BD is the standard, all others try but fail to surpass the quality and strength found in an Express screw. Quick bite, fast placement, outstanding quality and super strength! Climb on with the knowledge that you are protected by the best out there.

Review Title

The price tag is a little hard to swallow but the first time I placed one I forgot all about that and was just happy to be able to get something in so quickly.

Nice and fast placements

While these screws don't place as fast as Petzl's they are still great screws and place pretty quickly. I like the thumb screw which seems to be a little more user-friendly right out of the box than Petzl's, though in the long-run I don't think they are as fast. BD has been making screws for a long time and these ones continue the same tradition of quality and performance.

Great!

By:

I use both BD Express and Petzl Laser Sonic and they are both great. On the up side for the Express screw i find it bites better on cold ice (-10 C and colder) , less expanding on the ice and perhaps has a better finish makes it goes easier into the ice. Finally it takes less space when you're racking up. On the down side it's harder to operate with mittens or large gloves. There you have the upside of the Laser Sonic it's superb with large gloves or mittens. Also you get a good moment when working with it. On softer ice I find it just as good.
