It's a proven fact that crampons and down jackets don't play well together. The Black Diamond Crampon Bag keeps these kids apart when you load up you pack. This durable coated-nylon bag keeps your sharp 'poons from slashing up your other gear, and the mesh top lets them dry after a day on the ice.
Bottom Line: Keep the sharp stuff away from the soft stuff with the Black Diamond Crampon Bag.
I was some 20 miles from the car on a multi-day ski tour, and my friend's crampons punctured his CamelBack bladder. My friend and I didn't like him that much so instead of sharing one of our extra Nalgenes, we forced him to drink out of his pee bottle the rest of the trip.
Since no one else has answered your question I will try to help. I don't have the saber tooth crampons however I have the Petzl Dart and Petzl Vasak and they both fit fine in the bag with room to spare. Looking at the pictures I don't see why it wouldn't fit. You might check the Black Diamond Toolbox, it might be bigger.I'm pretty happy with this bag, its pretty light, protects my pack and its vented so I can spray a little wd-40 on my crampons when I get home and store them in the bag. If the truth be told there really aren't many solutions for carrying crampons...
I love my BD crampon bag. It fits my Cyborgs perfectly. I tried a couple other sets to see if BD's were the only ones that fit and Petzl's Dartwins, M10 and Simonds Vampires fit fine. Don't know about Grivel, but the other fits fine. I also love this bag more than any other because of the daisy chain on the back. Petzl's doesn't have that, so if you are attaching it to your pack you are out of luck. Drains water like a champ too!
lightweight, durable and inexpensive...had to remove the "accordion" cover on my G12's to keep them from wanting to expand and having the front points tear through
This bag fits my sabretooths just fine, even with the long center bar. Grivels have that accordion thing which makes them less compact, but BD crampons are great for this. It protects other gear nicely and the daisy chain is great for tying it on outside of the pack, which is where I like to carry my crampons. Drainage is fine, though I still store my crampons out of the bag for drying.
Note: You need to put your crampons point-to-point for this (or nearly any) bag to work well. Points will obviously go through the mesh and can go through the walls with a little effort. That's not a drawback of this bag, that's just a consequence of not using a metal box to store your crampons.
its an OK bag if you just need to store your crampons somewhere so that they dont lay around loose. This is not a good bag to protect your pack. the fishing net on top is a flaw. I just bought a new Osprey pack and got wholes all over it even with this BD bag. I have BD cyborgs and they fit pretty snug
I couldn't agree less with those who say that the bag is too small, or that the mesh is a problem. The bag fits my BD contact strap crampons perfectly, and pretty easily every time. It's also easy to orient your poons in the bag so that the spikes point away from the mesh, which lets them dry and not rust. Furthermore, it laces nicely onto the crampon patch on my BD speed pack, and its cheeeap. You can't ask tooo much from a $15 bag.
Lightweight but not as near as good as the BD Toolbox which is a slightly bigger, fully enclosed crampon/ice screw bag. If you're gonna spend money on one of these buy the Toolbox.
I'm not sure what other reviewers complaining about the small size of the bag are trying to fit in it; I am able to put in it my BlackDiamond Contact crampons and have quite a bit of room left.
Has anyone really tried to put a set of crampons in these bags? They are only 11" long x 5.5" wide x 3.5" high. They are good for a set of car keys, chapstick and some waterproof matches. I had to take the front points off my G12's to get them to fit. There has to be a better solution.
I have yet to find a set of crampons that does not fit in this bag. Fully-rigid ice-climbing crampons do not, but the vast majority of crampons made since 1995 are collapsible and compact to short enough to fit in this bag just fine. If you're doing serious ice-climbing with fully rigid crampons then you want a bigger back that holds your other protection as well in any case and you wouldn't be looking at this bag.
Bag is a little to small. Also, when it gets -15 and below it really gets stiff and mine even cracked. I would think there is a better bag out there some place. I would save your money.
This bag works great, it saves your pack, down jacket, goggles, etc from the sharp points of your crampons. The Camp USA XLC 390 Crampons fit perfectly. Highly recommended, enough said.
This bag seems to be too big when I fold up my crampons methodically. If I just throw them in, they fit great and the bag protects everything that I dont want to get stabbed.
