The Bibler Bombshelter is a state-of-the-art 4-person/4-season tent with a stormproof design. Aconcagua? Yeah, been there. Everest? Sure, done that. What about gusting winds and four feet of snow? Yep, the Bombshelter can handle that, too. True to its name, this tent is virtually unstoppable in the mountains—or anywhere for that matter. With its state-of-the-art, stormproof design, the Bombshelter sleeps four and weighs in at a scant 8lbs 10.5oz. Four interior poles intersect seven times for maximum strength, and two attached vestibules provide covered entries and room for everyone's gear. Four interior mesh pockets offer internal storage space, as well. In warm weather, both front and aft doors can be rolled to the side allowing you to take in the view and increase air circulation. Multiple stakeout loops provide secure anchoring in windy locations. Plus, the Bombshelter is designed to eliminate over 50% of the seams—making it stronger, lighter and more waterproof. If you're looking for the ideal team-mountaineering/base camp tent, you simply won't find one that's stronger or lighter than the Bombshelter.
Bottom Line: This is the ideal super-light, super-strong mountaineering/base camp tent. Nothing outlasts a Bombshelter.
This tent has treated me well. It is water proof, and super bomb proof in storms and because of the single wall design, it is light and roomy. It has a spacious front vestibule and a smaller real vestibule. I have lived on Denali and in other parts of Alaska for extende periods of time and it is still holding strong. It is tight with 4 men but works and is great with 2 on an expedition with lots of gear. Highly recommended!
I always like to have footprints with my tents, and Black Diamond does make one for the Bombshelter. It's called the "Guiding Light/Bombshelter Ground Cloth" (because it also fits the Guiding Light tent). However, it doesn't seem that bc.com is carrying it at this time, but it can be found elsewhere (or you can contact backcountry.com to see if they plan on making it available).
The Bombshelter is a classic 4 season mountaineering tent that gets the job done! I have used it in the Himalaya, Denali, Rainier, and around Colorado with nothing but great results. It's actually easy to set up for one person and the attached vestibule holds packs and boots for two or three folks without issue. Four people get a little tight, unless your just playing cards. For strength to weight ratio the Bombshelter is without peer. When Todd Bibler designed it he definitely knew what hard-core mountain people were looking for, being one himself!
This is a great tent for anything from mountaineering expeditions to summer backpack trips. it Has a spacious interior that fits two with gear comfortably, as well as two large vestibules on either side. Since it is a single walled tent it is light and easy to set up. One drawback is that it has no mesh windows for sky gazing but in that case you should be sleeping outside anyways. If you are looking for one tent for all of your adventures this is it.
Used on Rainier 4 day Emmons in August. Excellent value.Bought for 3 persons, as weight to space ratio was our primary consideration. Our 2nd rope had a 12 lb Sierra Designs tent- ugh! It was more tent than we needed for August, which gives confidence for future use. Make sure you get some snow anchors as the stakes that come with it are puny and useless in snow. We put 2 packs at each side up front and one in the back, plus boots - the vestibules are excellent. Also the front vestibule design lets it easily fold back to the tent door during the day when you don't need it (see pic). It doesn't pack small, so get a bag with laces up the side to suck it down to fit in your pack (I used an old school sleeping bag compression sack and it worked perfect). Also if you are 6'8" - you may have trouble sitting up inside unless you're in the center. The 2 side poles bent a little after about 3 times setting it up but they seem OK. You can only notice it when they are lying out straight. 4 pockets on the sides hold the basics in case you need to get up at night. The floor was a little damp in the morning, pack towel came in handy for that. The walls never got wet.Backcountry reviews on this page sold me on the tent - had to write my own. Nothing is perfect, but this is close to it. Looking forward to backcountry skiing weekends this winter.
Poles are internal on Bibler's with interesting twist ties to hold them in place... very quick and easy set up.Another $.02.....Having the poles on the inside is awesome.....if conditions are mellow, you only need to use a couple of the twisties.....also, when it is puking outside, you can throw everything inside your tent, jump in, and set it up from the inside....
This tent owns. Just make sure you have at least 2 people sleeping in it to stabilize the heat ratio. The vestibules are huge and will make you and your dogs happy.
I used a tent, Bibler Tempest, with Todd-tex for 4 seasons in everything from -30F winter storms to 40F fall deluges... never once did I get wet from condensation or water from the outside... stuff is unstoppable. Only downside it it is bulky and heavy. It doesn't compress well.
This tent is awesome. It is tight with four people, but roomy for 3. The tent is definitely a bomb shelter. I highly recommend this tent for teams of 2, 3 or 4. Even if only 2 members, the tent weights about as much as a three-man tent with more room. I have used this tent on other trips and will be using two on Cho Oyu with only two members.
What kind of trip are they doing? This is a lot of tent if you're not doing mountaineering or a winter trip. Be that as it may, set-up is not bad, but do a couple of practice pitches at home first. Once they get used to pitching it a few times, it should go up in about four minutes.
One person could set this up with no problems, but definitely practice in the backyard a few times before heading into the wild.Once they get used to pitching it a few times, it should go up in about four minutes.
This tent is more suited to 3 adults than the claimed 4, but it would easily work in a cozy pinch for 4 adults provided the vestibules are used optimally. I got it as a family tent - 2 adults and 2 kids - for environments that are generally favorable but with the capacity for unrelenting harshness, like offseason horsepacking trips, rivertrips and backpacking. We all easily fit.
I've found the Bombshelter to be a very quiet tent since there is no fly to flap around, especially in vicious desert windstorms. The 11 stakeout loops and superstrong internal pole system have provided mental security the couple times it was truly tested. I wasn't entirely sure about the internal pole twist-ties, but they have worked as claimed they would. I also got the Bombshelter specific ground tarp, but I had to get it directly from Black Diamond.
