Black Diamond Bionic Pro Crampon - 2006

The Black Diamond Bionic Pro Crampon can tackle anything you're up for. The Bionic's tapered frontpoints can be adjusted as dual- or mono-points and can be spaced further apart for better frontpoint penetration, which sounds dirty but works great. Horizontal, flared rails allow boots to ride closer to the ice, providing rock-shoe-like precision and touch. A micro-adjust heel lever gives you a near-perfect fit in seconds without tools. The Bionic Pro also includes the Bionic spacer kit to further dial in your fit. For pros and beginners alike, the Bionic is still the final say on today's challenging mixed and ice lines.

Bottom Line: Eats ice for lunch, sometimes dinner too.

excellent multipurpose crampons

By:
June 10, 2005

I recently bought two pairs of these for me and my climbing partner, and they have been quite a treat. They’re much, much lighter than my Rambo-2, excellent on icy slopes and mixed terrain, as well as some near-vertical climbing.

Very pleased!

nice adjustability

By:
June 13, 2003

I bought these as my first pair, and chose the high end of the spectrum because of the recommendation from the sales guy and that they are adjustable. I can switch between double and single point, and even with single, slightly turn them in or out by adjusting the boot clip. They initially rusted only the first time, but after that were fine. I take care of them, oiling and keeping dry. Great so far. Can't wait for snow. I suppose the only drawback may be that there is no strap completely around the boot, meaning if you were mountaineering and they came off, you might lose them. But being on vertical ice, never had them slip off. Just make sure you get them on tight.

Bionic on Rainier

By:
August 12, 2004

I used the Bionics climbing Rainer and found them to be fantastic. The were simple and never came unbound, a concern I read in another review. I used them in mixed snow conditions with great results, also.
