Black Diamond Ascension Nylon Split STS Climbing Skin

Designed specifically for powder-specific planks with a waist larger than 110mm, the Black Diamond Nylon Split STS Climbing Skins give you the same climbing performance with reduced weight and drag. A section of webbing in the middle of the skins makes for easier packing and quick on and off, while the adjustable STS tail strap gives you 10cm of leeway for different skis in your quiver. Black Diamond also added a split skin-specific tip loop made for the massive shovels found on most powder skis.

Bottom Line: Climbing power for your mega-fat powder sticks.

I've got Kuros and 140MM BD STS Skins. Even with adjustable tip-loop fully extended it is pretty clear they will slip off the end of this fat shovel...any ideas?

I had to buy some 120mm G3 tip loops to accommodate my fat skis. Try that. Have you got a chance to use them and see if they will slip off the end? My only other idea is to try making your own loops out of cable and rubber hose. Good luck pushing those huge sticks up the hill. Not exactly a touring ski, you know.

Just picked up some Megawatts. Are the split skins going to better skin for this ski than the standard full width skin. Like to hear from some with experience with the split skins.

Absolutely, the split skin will be better. With a ski that wide, you have got plenty of glue to keep the skins stuck on the ski bases. It makes a difference when you are on top of the that windy ridge trying to rip the skins off. Also it lightens up the skin quite a bit and makes it more packable, which makes a difference with something this wide.

I used these on my fat touring ski set up 115mm waist 185cm long BD Justice. I was astonished at how lighter they are & how much better they glide then my old ascensions. They also pack better. I am not sure if it was the ski being rockered or the skins but it was a little more difficult to skin up steeper slopes. That said I have only been out twice on them. Hopefully they will be durable.

Get skins that fit the widest dimensions of the ski and then trim to accommodate the sidecut. The Shamans have a HUGE shovel, so you could probably go a little narrower than the widest part of the shovel and still be ok...

I believe these are supposed to fit skis over 110mm at the waist and up to 160mm. So with a little trimming with the included tool, you should be just right.

what is the width and (untrimmed) weight of these skins, also what is the width of the "non skin" strip and the middle.

Any idea what it's made out of and how strong it is?

Width (untrimmed) - 160mm
Weight Per Pair (untrimmed): 708 g, 1 lb 9 oz
Also, dont know the width of the "non-skin" strip in the middle, but the material is nylon and it is actually quite durable. I've seen these and if I had to guess, I would say the nylon center strip is roughly 2 inches wide without measuring.

The gap in the middle is to reduce weight. I believe it is also Nylon, I've seen it and it's plenty strong.

I have a pair of both Volkl Gotamas and Kuros. I would like to have to buy one pair of skins. Will these work for both? If not, which skin would you recommend?

How long is the difference between the two skis length? STS tailclips can work for a range of about 10CM. If your skis are drastically different in length, then no, you can't have them on both. If they can work for length, you are talking a large discrepency in underfoot dimensions. Goat is 105 and Kuro is 130, that means if you trim for the goat, you've got 12.5+ mm of slick bottoms on each side of your Kuro... and that could suck hard on a an icy early morning traverse.

In a pinch, Yeah, it'd work, but I wouldn't plan on skiing a season like that.
