Black Diamond Absolute Mitten

Denali, Everest, the arctic? Yeah, make sure you remember to bring the ridiculously warm Black Diamond Absolute Mitten so you get to come back with all your fingers. Between the waterproof breathable Gore-Tex lining and ultra-warm PrimaLoft insulation, these Black Diamond gloves provide the weather protection you need for the world's highest and coldest places. The Absolute Mitten uses a large gauntlet with a drawstring closure to keep out the snow during stormy summit days.

Bottom Line: If you're wearing a down suit, make sure you have these gloves as well.

I'm concerned about warmth v. wetness. How does primaloft compare with down, really? I'm hesitant to get primaloft due to old mittens (Marmot) not quite doing the trick (frost nipped fingers repeatedly as a kid), but am unsure about goose down due to potential moisture. I just moved to Maine, so I'm not even sure if wet snow will be an issue. I use them for casual excercise (dog walking, sledding, etc.) and would add a liner for rare fine motor needs (eg. tying ice skates or picking up poop - ugh). Suggestions? Please also include any sizing info you might have since not all mitts follow the same chart. I'm 7.5, woman's.

Ridiculously Warm

In my opinion, these are the warmest mitts you can buy. usually with extreme warmth you give up dexterity. Black Diamond solved this issue by carefully designing a trigger finger liner that pulls out of the mitt. When doing so the outer mitt hangs from your wrist by a dummy string. This means that simple activities which are impossible to manage while wearing big mitts can still be accomplished without having to expose a bare hand to the elements. The Absolutes are made for the most extreme cold, but are VERY light for the amount of insulation used. This is important for high altitude climbs because on warmer days, when these mitts will be carried in your pack. The palms are leather and very durable- even after rappels. One note: getting your fingers inside the grip of an ascender while wearing these is nearly impossible.

Certainly are warm...

These mitts certainly are warm, that is if you can actually get your hand in them and do anything afterwards such as grasp a pole... I've always been a fan of gloves however this year after having some issues with warmth, I decided to go for the mitten. With warmth foremost in mind I choose the black diamond absolute. Upon actually seeing them when they arrived I had doubts of having any dexterity at all which were confirm after I tired putting them on. I gave them an honest chance on a weekend snowshoe trek and in addition to realizing I couldn't do anything with my hands, I also found a break in one of the seams of the liner and noticed that the stitching was coming loose on one of the shells...that was enough to convince me to return them. Not what I expected for the price. I ended up with the OR Alti mitt and am completely happy…half the size, just as warm.
