Big Agnes Three Wire Bivy

Pack your Big Agnes Three Wire Bivy for your solo peak-bagging adventure, backpacking trip, or bike tour. The waterproof breathable Three Wire Bivy doesn't take up a ton of room in your pack, and it provides protection from rainstorms and biting bugs. This Big Agnes bivy comes with poles that provide you with 20 inches of head space so you don't get that claustrophobic, I-can't-breathe feeling. Close the bivy entirely in a storm or opt for the mesh window to deter mosquitoes and get air circulating. The DAC Featherlite poles are lightweight yet durable.

Bottom Line: Get shelter from the storm when you bed down inside the Big Agnes Three Wire Bivy.

Are the seams sealed and if so, how? What type of eVent is this...the 2 layer or the 3 layer? I am thinking of using this as my "tent" for hiking trips. Any suggestion as to how to keep my pack dry...I have a pack cover but that only covers the sides and top, not the part that is facing my back when I put on the pack.

All seams are sealed with tape. Not sure if it is 2 or 3 layer. If your pack is empty you can stuff it under your feet for extra insulation and cushion. Unless of course you're like the rest of us, and your pack isn't completely empty, you don't really have any place to put the pack. Best you could do is put the cover on, lay it frame side (which is against your back) down and hope for the best. Or pack a trash bag.

I was looking to get this, but then the Fly Creek came out, and ended up going with that instead. Only 2 oz more, I can sit up, and have limited room to store your shoes and pack.

Just had my new, three-wire bivy out on a 5 day trip in the White Mountains. One night I had to squat through the remains of a hurricane, and the bivy did a great job keeping me dry. Condensation on the hood and pole was moderate, but 3-4 inches of rain fell overnight. Construction, fit, and finish are all good. I'd prefer if the zipper were a bit longer-- making getting in and out easier. I have Big Agnes sleeping bag and pad, and the whole group work together beautifully.

The mesh part zips kind of like a tent door. That's how most of them are anyway, and this one looks the same as most bivys.

Big Agnes 3 wire bivy

Only two poles that are connected by a plastic hub (like one pole really since they are connected), so there's not much mystery. Easy set up. The one pole goes into the "hood", and the other is placed long the brim of the hood into grommets on the sides. It is similar to the Bibler Tripod Bivy only there is no pole to create foot room. This bivy is slightly more roomy than the Bibler Tripod. The dimensions are on the Big Agnes website. I haven't tested it in a nasty storm yet, but so far it's a nice bivy.

Does this have to be staked down, or will it work freestanding?

Does this have to be staked down, or will it work freestanding? I'm looking for something to keep the bugs, mice, and snakes off me in the Appalachian Trail Shelters in the Smoky Mountains. Thanks.

Best bivy Ive ever seen or used. Easy access, lots of space, and less condensation "as far as I know" than any other. If you love the outdoors as much as I do, you need one of these. Its worth the higher price!
