By itself, a waste of money

By:

I bought this hoping that I wouldn't need an air mattress, but the thickness of this pad is not near enough needed for me. It was almost as if it wasn't there. The next day I used an air filled pad underneath it and it was fine.

If I were to do it over again I wouldn't have spent the huge amount of money for this product that barely does anything on its own.

Well, considering this is not designed to use on its own, it seems to be more the user's fault than the product. This was designed to be used with a BA air pad, as supplemental comfort for those that want it.

Try reading the description next time.

Anyone using this with a Thermarest Neoair and if so how is it working for you?

I highly doubt someone using this pad will be using it with a neo-air and vise versa. It's contradictory.

I slipped it over a thick inflatable mattress, and slept well on it, would recommend it to others; this combo of foam cover + air mattress seems to work well, as I have the hardest time sleeping when I camp.

Ow... but it does have some potential.

I bought this kit last year and have used it with my thermarest - I have to admit, I'm kind of disappointed. I still wake up in the middle of the night with pressure points and have yet to get a good night's sleep with it. It's also pretty bulky once you've inserted your pad into it...not ideal for backpacking; more the size you'd take car camping. It's softer than my thermarest or z-rest alone, so I am thinking about giving it a second chance, perhaps with a big agnes aircore mattress. We'll see... it's an awful lot of money to spend for what little it seems to do. Three stars for the idea, happy green color, and in the hopes that with a thicker air mattress it will be as comfortable as I dreamed it would!

You definitely need to use it with the big agnes mattress. This memory foam coupled with that mattress makes you feel like you are sleeping on air. I have back problems and have difficulty sleeping on most air mattresses but the big agnes is perfect for me. I now never feel the ground when I sleep.

Get rid of the therarest and use it with a Big Agnes pad and you will see the difference. I tried out the Thermarest in the stores and I don't understand why people buy them. Try the Big Agnes pads (yea, you have to blow them up but we are all big boys now) they are half the price and much more comfortable. Add to that these neat products Big Ag makes to make good products even better and you will be a Big Ag customer for life. Did you know the Big Agnes air pad folds up the size of a one liter water bottle?

I only use this product for colder weather backpacking as it does add more weight to your haul, but if you want to stay warm and have a good night sleep....buy one. (And get a Big Ag air pad to use with it!!)

I look forward to camping so I can sleep on it

By:
August 19, 2008

I'm mildly obsessed with this product. If it was as wide as a bed it would be just as comfortable. I have the air mattress inside, and it is great. It packs to the size of most other sleeping pads- i actually got a thermarest stuff sack and it fits just right(with the air mattress deflated in side the cover still). I am going on a year long adventure and would carry this even though it is bigger and heavier than other options. Sleep is too important to scrimp on!

Yes they are different. The Kit is actually and upgrade from the pad. If you have the pad, grab the kit and get a better nights rest.

Not what I thought...

By:
March 16, 2009

I grudgingly give this product three stars as it is adequate for the job... However, I was under the impression it was a stand alone product, and have no intention of adding more weight to my pack. Although I admit that used in conjunction with a thermarest air mattress it is quite comfortable, I took it on a weeklong trip, and felt like leaving it behind after one night... On it's own it is useless.

Hi- I just bought the Big Agnes Sleeping Giant pad and it's

Hi- I just bought the Big Agnes Sleeping Giant pad and it's awfully thin for these old bones. The existing pad is about an inch thick and I bottom out hard all over when I'm on it. Can an inflatable pad be added? I guess I could use my Thermarest too but then I'm carrying two pads on my motorcycle. Am I missing something (besides a young, lithe body ;-)? TIA...

This pad is a "kit" and meant to upgrade another pad. In other words, you insert another pad into the sleeve of this one and it is not meant to be used alone. The description on this site does not clearly point this out. Go to BA's site and they clearly describe it as an upgrade to an existing pad.

I used it for a week

By:
May 12, 2008

I used it for a week (5 days) and it was definitely more comfortable than the floor, but I can't tell you that it is any better or worse than any other foam mattress pad.

for my wife

By:
March 5, 2009

Bought this for my wife so she will camp/ backpack with me more. I personally feel spoiled using an air mattress let alone an extra inch of memory foam. For trips without my wife I would not take this as I would perfer something more compact. I think the price is a little steep since it does not come with an air mattress of its own, but it is worth it to get my wife out camping more.

I keep coming back to this pad

By:
August 9, 2008

The best one so far out of my collection of pads, beats my thermarests, other big agnes, rei, etc. Still have my sights set on a big agnes air core insulated. That seems to be the perfect cold weather pack pad.
