Big Agnes Pomer Hoit SL Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down
Weighing in at 2lb 11oz (long) with 800-fill down, the Big Agnes Pomer Hoit 0-Degree Down Sleeping Bag is ideal for lightweight alpine climbing and winter camping. By taking out the insulation on the bottom of the bag, which becomes useless when compressed, Big Agnes significantly dropped the weight of this winter bag. A sleeve on the bottom of the Pomer Hoit holds a Big Agnes mummy-shaped pad (not included). This system efficiently uses every ounce of insulation to keep you toasty at a winter camp and keeps your pad under you no matter how much you move at night. Stuff your jacket into the Pomer Hoit's integrated pillow sleeve, and get the best night's sleep you've ever had in the outdoors.
Bottom Line: Get full use out of your insulation with the Big Agnes Pomer Hoit.
I found this bag to be well made and full of high quality down. I can't find anything wrong with the bag itself, but I can with the design of Big Agnes Sleeping Bags. The idea sounded great, but I found in practice it left much to be desired. I addmit that I am a naturally cold sleeper, but froze my but off in this bag in only 20 degree temperatures. All the heat loss was through the ground. I was using the Big Agnes Dual Core Pad which was rated to zero degrees just like the bag. When I asked Big Agnes about the issues I had encountered they advised me to use a second closed cell foam pad under the sleeping system. I did not want to do this so returned the bag. Other reviews rate this bag well, and mention nothing of what I encountered. I just couldn't imagine this bag keeping me warm anywhere near the temperature rating, especially on snow covered ground.
This is the first mummy bag that I can fully zip up without feeling cramped. It's 800 goose down is lightweight and toasty warm. I love this bag and look forward to many adventures for years to come.
I've been hiking and camping for almost forty years and this is the best bag I've ever owned. In fact I'll NEVER buy a bag from another manufacturer again! I'm a cold sleeper and was tired of sleeping out in 30 degree weather and being very cold in my 25 degree rated down bag. This bag is rated zero and is just as light and compressible as my old 25 degree bag. On a recent five day trip with night time temperatures in the twenties this bag kept me warm and toasty. Although I haven't yet tried it in zero degree weather I feel very confident in the zero degree rating is realistic. I'm six four and this bag is quite roomy and the Big Agnes concept of the pad sleeve on the bottom is pure genius! All you have to do is use the correct twenty inch wide pad to suit the weather conditions. I used an old standard Therm-A-Rest 20 inch wide pad and it worked just fine. I also love the small down pads that cover the sides of your face when you're zipped in - very nice comfort feature. This bag is worth every penny.
This bag has a couple flaws, but overall it is an amazing bag. Super warm, comfortable, and with their pad system if you have an air pad you can slide it in the back and never roll off your pad. Feathers do tend to work their way out of the bag, more so than other down bags i have. I do believe though that Big Agnes might refill the bag with down for a charge.
Ok, first of all I got the long version of the sleeping bag. I am 6'3 205, and I fit fine. The only complaint I have about the bag is the zipper is tight when zipping around my shoulders. It feels like it won't go past it, but when it does I notices that it may be a design feature to keep the draft down. As with ANY sleeping bag you MUST be careful when zipping it up and down especially if it has a draft collar like this one does. I used this bag for 3 months in the Rockies as a Mountain Guide this past summer, and this bag was awesome. It is about 3 lbs, and well worth it. If you are going to be camping in freezing/below freezing weather, or sleep cold this is your bag! I find myself getting very warm in the summer nights, and use a lighter synthetic bag. You definitely need to get the sleeping pad to go along with it b/c it is very comfortable, and insulates well if sleeping on snowy/cold ground. Really no complaints about it, and it help up in daily use for 3 months and is still in good shape so I am sure for the average camper it will last years. All in all GREAT BUY!!!
I'm a contractor in Afghanistan and I jump from base to base lots of them being in the mountains and with no heat. I knew I needed a serious bag that was small and light weight since I have to carry all of my gear. This bag performed flawlessly. At 5'9 220 I had more than enough room to move around in the bag. The sleep pad integration is great also (don't try to use this bag in cold weather with out it). The foot box has ample insulation so no worries on cold feet. I like the bag so much I am buying a light weight one for the summer.
I'm sure it's a perfectly usable bag, just not for me. I'm 5'9, stocky upper body. I bought the regular and found I couldn't move in this bag. The width 67.5" which is huge compared to other manufacturers is only due to the the built in pad. The actual girth is much smaller, I couldn't move around without feeling like someone was choking me. I would want to use this bag with a mid layer down and a vapor barrier for some trips.... nope, not this one. Also I had a bad time using the zipper either catching it on the material else pulling separating at the bottom. I once spent 6 mins trying to put the zip through the latch. And lastly, the pad doesn't run to the end of the bag, so the hood is actually off the end of the pad, and to far away from my head to be of much use.
This is my first down bag used this in the Bolivian andes, sleeping at over 5000m, and I was always warm and comfortable in this bag, plus its big enough to get dressed in.. would buy this again
