Big Agnes Pitchpine SL Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Ultra light fanatics, listen up: The Big Agnes Pitchpine SL Sleeping Bag is the lightest-weight bag that Big Agnes makes. This 40-degree down bag weighs just a hint more than a pound and compresses smaller than a bread loaf. Big Agnes used 800-fill down, super lightweight Toray shell fabric, and quilt construction to create such an airy bag. A water-repellent finish on the Pitchpine means you can sleep under the stars and not worry about light precip. A sleeve holds your Big Agnes mummy-shaped pad so you don't wake up lying next to your pad instead of on it. * Note: Don't opt to cut more weight by leaving your pad at home when you use this bag—the pad replaces insulation on the bag's bottom.

Bottom Line: For summertime adventures in moderate temps, why haul extra weight? Pack the Big Agnes Pitchpine SL Down Sleeping Bag.

Great bag if you fit

Extremely light and packable. All though the mummy pad and bag don't exactly allow for any movement,(hence the mummy pad) insert only. I am 6'2 and 225 lbs. and own the long version of this bag and hang off the sides and ends of this combo. If I only was a bit smaller this bag wouldn't have any complaints.

I actually got the Big Agnes Gilpin 10 deg down bag, but my question

I actually got the Big Agnes Gilpin 10 deg down bag, but my question has to do with the pad/under insulation on this bag.. from the writeup, it makes it sound like there is no insulation on the bottom of the bag. is that the case, or are they refering to some sort of built in pad that bags sometimes have? I am really wondering if I will have trouble using a typical rectangular mat (with the bag on top, not in the sleeve) with the Gilpin.
Any ideas? Does someone own a bag that has both these features?

All BA bags have no insulation on the bottom of the bag. This is for two main reasons: one, once insulation is compressed, i.e. lying on top, it does not insulate, so BA cut out the middle man. Second, the back of every BA bag has a full length sleeping pad sleeve that will accommodate the corresponding pad size. BA's pads are 2.5 in. thick and are incredibly comfortable. Sliding the pad in allows for the user to never slide off the pad and compromise the bag temp. rating. Also, the reduction of insulation and minimal fabric usage allows for a slightly lighter bag. I have the Pomer Hoit with an Insulated Air Core pad and the system works perfectly. You can also deflate the pad and pack the two together in one stuff sack. Any pad will fit because of the similar dimensions, they just might not be as snug! I highly recommend the BA sleeping systems.

Just read the note at the end of the product description and BC should fix it. Not using a pad with ANY sleeping bag is just wrong. A bags temp. rating is dependent on a sleeping pad of some sort. A 20 deg. bag with no pad becomes just a piece of fabric as will any other sleeping bag of any temp. rating.

super light bag

This bag is amazingly light and packs REALLY small. I loved the tiny amount of space it took up in my pack on our last trip into the Uintas. A couple of nights (~40deg) I found myself a touch chilly (I'm a cool sleeper), but the bag was soooo light and small. I found that a stocking cap or a silk bag liner warmed me up perfectly. If you are focused on the lightest out there, this is it.

How does the neck cinch down on this bag? I had a Yampa by BA

How does the neck cinch down on this bag? I had a Yampa by BA and it just cut across my throat and didn't seal around my throat to keep the heat in. Does this seal tight enough and comfortably to keep the heat in?

This bag has a similar closure to the Yampa as it does not have a hood. However the span at the neck is a bit tighter so its going to cinch up easier and tighter.Hope this helps

Oh my God!

I love this sleeping bag. It is THEE best summer sleeping bag I have owned. Big Agnes is ingenious with there bag design. With a little effort, it can also compact even smaller then the stuff size listed in tech specs, which is crazy small.

The Best Summer Bag

By:

This bag is warm light and did I say light. With my bivy pad and bag all in one stuff sack it compress small than most bags. The only thing I don't care for is the straps that hold the pad instead of the full cover. This would not be a problem for most but I like to keep the pad in the bag and the bag in the bivy for easy camping. I work on the trinity alps trail crew and have already abused this bag more than most ever would. It's holding up great.
