Big Agnes Buffalo Park Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Synthetic
Big Agnes made the Buffalo Park Sleeping Bag for big and tall guys and those who just like a lot of room to toss and turn. The Buffalo Park features a wide toebox and extra girth around shoulders and hips. This 40-degree bag features synthetic insulation that retains warmth even when wet and makes this bag an economical choice. As with all Big Agnes sleeping bags, a sleeve on the Buffalo Park's bottom holds your sleeping pad. You'll need Big Agnes' 25-inch-wide rectangular pad to line this bag's floor.
Bottom Line: Why sleep uncomfortably in the mummy position when you can stretch out and turn over in the Big Agnes Buffalo Park Bag?
Matt W. makes a very fair and balanced review of the bag, I agree with almost all of his points: the absence of the second stuff bag and the coarse liner. I also wish the cotton liner was smoother, it does feel a bit "rough" and binds a bit against your clothing when you sleep. Not a show stopper, just a little pet peeve of mine. I also own a down Summit Park (BA) and the liner on the Summit is very nice. On the positives, this concept of the air mattress is simply awesome. I have a Luxury Camp Thermarest pad and this BA/pad combo can't be beat. I am not very tall or big (5"10, 169 lb) but the extra space of these Park Series bags makes a huge difference in my comfort level, I put a premium on having space inside my bag over weight and size. I originally ordered this bag and returned it by mistake, then re-ordered it again! Also having these two BA bags allows me the option to use the Buffalo Park as an overbag over the Summit Park for extreme cold. Great price for a great product!
Recently bought the Big Agnes Buffalo Park bag for a two week trip into the Canadian Rockies and Western US. Already owned a BA insulated air mattress and got the Buffalo Park as the built in pad pocket makes such great sense.
Although the Buffalo Park bag does not loft nearly as much as another 40 degree bag I own, it is quite warm in temps down to 32 degrees. Part of that may be down to the "comfort" factor associated with the cotton blend lining in the bag. At 6'2", with a 48inch chest, the amount of space is downright luxurious and the attached pillow pocket a welcome addition. Having the sleeping pad as "part" of the bag is really great - wish I would have done this much sooner.
As for any negatives, there are few. On the "niggles" list, the zipper on my bag does not function as smoothly as the Marmot and TNF bags we own. I would also wish the cotton blend liner was a higher thread count - it's rather coarse and therefore "grabs" whatever you're sleeping in whenever you rollover or move about. Not a big deal, but would have added to the perceived value and comfort in my opinion. Finally, although the Backcountry write-up states you get both a stuff and a storage sack with the bag, it comes with just a stuff sack. Again, not a big deal, but not up to the expectation set.
All in all, I'm pleased with this purchase and would recommend the Buffalo Park bag. Chalk up another in the "plus" column for Big Agnes.
I'm 5' 10" 265 and wear a size 60 coat.I always have a problem getting my shoulders in most bags. I camp all year from 90 degree nights in Honduras to 25 degree nights in north Ala. What would be a good versatile bag and how cost effective is your bag layering.
Hi Pat, Of all BA bags, this one (along with all their Park series wide bags: Summit, Elk, Hog, Whiskey) would be the most likely to fit you.
As far as layering goes, considering your vast range of temps, layering would be perfect. Get a warm weather synthetic bag, and a cool weather down bag, and put the down inside the synthetic so you don't have to purchase a 3rd bag for the coldest nights.

I just got this bag, and although I can't comment on its warmth or function in the field, it appears to be really well made, it stuffs small and yet it's cavernous inside. It works perfect with my Alps Mountaineering Comfort Series pad (25x78x2). I bought a liner with it, thinking the lining would be cold and slippery, but it's not at all. It feels like a somewhat-rough bed sheet. I'll post another review once I've used it in the field.
