Backcountry.com Wool Hooded Jacket - Women's - 2007

Looking like a teched-out gear diva all the time can be a little tiresome—leave the Tron-look at home with your ski boots and opt for the unassuming Backcountry.com Women's Wool Hooded Jacket when it's time for some post-ski-day diversions. Extremely warm for its weight and naturally wind- and water-resistant, the Wool Hooded Jacket takes over as your around-town go-to piece and pulls double duty as a shell on clement days up at the resort or in the backcountry. Fleece-lined, zippered hand-warmer pockets offer refuge for chilly digits, while the zippered chest pocket keeps tabs on your cell phone, keys, and other small items. Pull the raw-edged, ergonomic hood up over your noggin when the evening breeze picks up, and thank our designers for adding a warmth-retaining inner cuff to the Wool Hooded Jacket's sleeves.

Bottom Line: Don't let the looks deceive you; the Backcountry.com Wool Hooded Jacket is just modest about its techy side.

Fashion & Function

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
October 7, 2008

This is one of my favorite Backcountry.com products. This jacket is really warm, comfortable and adjusts well with temperature. I've worn it on nights from 15 degrees to 50 degrees and it works really well through that gradient. I LOVE the style. The hoodie is fun, and the jacket has a super stylish female cut to it, which is really flattering. I am about 5'7+, so the length is great, love the subtle green color, and it is durable with great fabric. It goes over layers well and is tailer made for women. A great all round jacket for late fall to early spring, and suitable for milder backcountry outings to dinner downtown. Gotten lots of compliments on this jacket as well- people love the cut.

So, what's the difference between the Backcountry.com SIPHON

So, what's the difference between the Backcountry.com SIPHON Wool Hooded Jacket and the non-Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket? Thanks!

The 'non-Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket' is basically last season's version of the current Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket. That said, there are some differences in the jackets, mainly concerning the weight of the fabric. The non-Siphon was cut from some pretty burly fabric, i.e. heavy-weight wool blend shell fabric and brushed fleece lining. According to several customers, this made the jacket a little too warm and bulky. The current Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket uses a lighter-weight wool blend fabric shell with a grid-fleece lining, which gives the jacket a lighter, less-restricting feel. The Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket still provides the warmth and style you need, but just a little less burly than last season's non-Siphon.

Cozy warm goodness

By:
March 6, 2008

This jacket is very well made and provides great warmth. It has held up valiantly to a considerable amount of abuse and thanks to its wool composition, doesn't smell manky after continual use. I have long arms (3 inch ape index), and the sleeves are more than sufficient in length. My only complaints are that the zipper cover near the neck is not very well engineered (it's made of too flexible fabric and folds over so that it doesn't cover the zipper), and the zipper scratches my skin. I have to manually put the zipper cover back into place so that my skin doesn't get irritated. The hood is quite large and because it doesn't have a pull string, it isn't very useful in windy conditions- since I can't keep the hood up. Overall, an excellent coat requiring only a few minor tweaks.

How long is this jacket, as in torso size? I'm about 5'10" but have a long torso and an average frame. I don't want it to hit at an awkward spot or be too loose. Any ideas?

Totally love it!

By:
April 3, 2008

I just got this jacket, and I totally love it. I was deciding between The North Face Denali jacket, and this one, I'm glad I got this one! I was trying to decide between a small and medium, and went with the medium. I usually wear either or, but the medium is a little big. It's not bad if you're going to layer something thick underneath. If I were to do it over again, I'd go with a small - maybe in another color! I am 5'7" and 135 lbs - in case that helps anyone else choose their size.

Great!

By:
March 17, 2008

I was a bit unsure about this jacket. The pitfalls of internet shopping is buying it sight unseen, and I've had my share of misses. But this was a hit!

I only got it yesterday so I can't say how it will stand to the elements other than the short walk I took with my dog last night. It may be more of a late spring/early fall jacket, it'll probably be a bit cold for winter conditions.

I'm 5'4", 112lbs, so the xs fits, but I wont' be able to wear a bulky sweater underneath. But that's okay, because I'm slowly switching my wardrobe to merino wool and you don't need to bulk up. The fit is figure-flattering, but find that it's cut rather generously in the chest. Which is okay, it kind of gives me the illusion of having a bigger bust! ;-)

The fleece inside is soft, but because it's black, it's already collected a bit of white fur from my cat. The wool content is 25%, though, if that makes a difference to anyone.

Overall, it's a really cute kick-about jacket around town.

Does anyone have the XL size? I'm curious how it fits in

Does anyone have the XL size? I'm curious how it fits in regards to shoulders/arm movement. I find most fit really tight and want to make sure this will work.

GREAT fit, warm

By:
April 16, 2008

This jacket has a really flattering fit, I thought it was sized and shaped really well. It's really warm and comfortable. The only drawback is the pilling. The exterior gets little wool balls on it, making it look really shaggy and cheap. They're easy to remove but annoying to have to maintain.

Worth it!

By:
May 5, 2008

I'm really picky about gear. It's got to be functional, durable and look good. This jacket rocks. I've been out hiking in the rain and it keeps me dry for at least an hour in a down pour (you may get damp but are still super warm). It's warm for its weight with being long in the arms and back. Quite camo and quiet for stalking in the woods, and doesn't catch on branches. I'm 5'6", 130lbs and a medium is a good size. Big enough to layer up under without being baggy. My only dislikes about the coat are that the hood doesn't cinch up so it comes off when running or in wind and the cotton/wool outer layer is pilling in the high-wear areas like the arms.
Other than those little things it's a great jacket!!!

The Wool Hooded Jacket - Women's

By:
March 28, 2008

I can't say enough good stuff about this jacket. The quality is excellent, the fit is excellent, and it looks great on.
It runs small. I wear a medium, but really could wear a large in this jacket. The medium is tight. It's really my best purchase this year - I just love it - It's become my favorite thing!

I have the cocoa jacket, and the color is superb. There was a lot of detail put into the construction of this jacket, and its quality and style. You will find it remarkable.

Obsession with this Jacket

By:
March 14, 2008

I am so glad I bought this jacket - I've barely taken it off since I bought it! The sizing is perfect - definitely not on the small size - looks good whether you have a t-shirt or sweater on and I have to agree with the no-itch part - having polar fleece under the wool makes it comfy now matter if the layer underneath is a T-shirt or not. Blocks the wind great too! If the performance wasn't enough - the look is killer - sporting the goat tastefully without looking like a billboard advertisement the way some of the hoodies are out there!

What is the difference between the small and the medium size

What is the difference between the small and the medium size in the wool hooded jacket? For example the arm length and chest size? Thanks

I'm going to take a stab at it from a person who owns the jacket. I'm in between xs and s (5'4" 112 lbs). If I want a looser fit, I go for a small. But with this one, based on one reviewer who said it's cut generously, I went with an xs. I haven't tried the small, but my guess is it would be too loose. Someone said the arms are long, but I think it's cut generously so that it won't ride up if you have to raise your arms. I found that the chest is cut on the larger side. I'm pretty flat chested so when zipped up the area bulges out a bit, but not ridiculously so. I would say go with how you want it to fit - close, or loose.

SHARP!!

By:
April 18, 2008

Got mine yesterday, WOW! Very nice. The lining is actually a very fine fleece (so soft). It is a feminine form-fitting coat. I ordered a medium (I'm always between sizes) and it fits but with no layers underneath. I would order a size up if you plan on wearing sweaters, etc. The hood makes it more of a casual jacket but for someone like me who lives in jeans - it's my "dress" coat.

The best piece of clothing I own. It's warm, doesn't make you look like a marshmallow and fits perfectly. I wear it out on the town and hiking, biking and backcountry skiing. The hood is large and doesn't stay on in wind. Extra bonus - my dog's hair (which has destroyed my other fleeces) doesn't seem to stick much on this one.

Wool Hoodie

By:
April 8, 2008

I just rec'd this jacket. It fits really well on top, nice long sleeves, but snug in the hips. I ordered a S which I usually wear. 5'6" and 135lbs.
The wool content is only 25% and the lining is a neoprene.
I'm not sure if I'm keeping it.

December 6, 2008

I absolutely love this jacket. It is cut larger in the chest, which is awesome for me because I'm nursing a baby and the sleeves are nice and long so it covers my wrist. It is pretty windproof and most days riding my bike to school it is warm enough. There is some piling under the arms which is a little annoying but overall a great jacket.

Nice Jacket

By:
September 8, 2008

This jacket is great, especially if you are tall and long wasted. I am not. The hood sits way off my head and folds over to cover me and there's no way to cinch it. Unless you are Big Bird, it might be a bit much. But the jacket is warm, form fitting and made well. If I could grow a few inches (I'm 5'2"), I'd give it five stars.

This is a fantastic jacket. I plan to get a few more for gifts.
It's warm and fits extremely well. It's not scratchy. Cozy, great lining.
I really love how its tailored and not bulky. The quality is great and it looks quite smart for a casual jacket.
I'm usually an XS, sometimes a S. The XS fit perfectly. I'd say it runs a tad bit on the large side.

A great light jacket

By:
March 25, 2008

I really liked this jacket. It kept me pretty warm around 30 degree weather walking 5 mins downtown to work. The outside is wool, inside is a really soft fleece. I like the look, I even think the little goat logo is cute. I really wanted to purchase the denali womans jacket from North Face, but I just couldn't settle on the colors..(everyone has a black one). This is a really great alternative, and it also cost less then the denali jacket if budget seems to be your issue.

I purchased this hoody a few weeks ago and I have to stop myself from wearing it to work more than twice a week.

Very soft, very comfy and warm. I live in cold weather (20 - 30 degrees) and it's perfect for work attire with a cute tee underneath.

I'm between a medium and small; I'm 5' 7" (The North Face/Patagonia small, but Mountain Hardwear / Marmot / Arc'teryx medium). In this item, the small fits really well.

I love this jacket!!

By:
July 7, 2008

I got this jacket as a prize and its the best jacket I own!!! I love the color (I got the green) and the fit. Its has a very form-fitting, complimentary cut. Most other women's jackets make you look bulky and square, which I hate. This jacket fits just right, and is very generous in the chest area too. This jacket helps keeps me warm and dry in the morning when it's cold and/or rains. I wish you were able to cinch the hood, but other than that I have no complaints. I love this jacket. Thanks backcountry!

Flattering Jacket!

By: Backcountry.com Alumni
March 10, 2008

OK - so most jackets are boxy and make you look like you have a sweater or two under them. This is a really flattering jacket, especially if you have curves. It is tapered nicely at the waist. I usually wear a small to x-small and in this jacket the extra small fit quite nicely. This works well as a sweater as well as a jacket. And I am really, really sensitive to itchy wool and this is a NO ITCH jacket, thanks to the comfy lining.

this jacket has a flattering fit and is so warm and cozy. i use it for a cold hike, everyday errands and camping trips. it is wool, so fibers does tend to stick to it, but as long as you lint roll it every once in a while, you're golden.

Really Long Sleeves

By: Backcountry.com Employee
March 5, 2008

The quality of this jacket is top notch - I love color, the wool, and the embroidered logo. It is also stitched very well and the inside fabric is extremely warm and cozy. The sleeves are too long for me in a Medium and I am 5'4". Also, the edges of the hood are up close to my ears when it is unzipped - I think this is by design so this may be perfect for most people but it feels a bit claustrophobic to me. Having said that, this jacket is perfect for wearing in brisk, cold weather and allows you to rock the Goat in perfect style. It looks fantastic!
