The waterproof breathable, fully-welded Backcountry.com Women’s Stoic 2.0 Shell has you covered whether you’re a week into an alpine climb or just a few hours from civilization. The Stoic 2.0’s slightly-stretchy, three-layer Bombshell fabric stands up to Mother Nature’s fallout without leaving you to suffocate when it’s time to breathe and the welded seams fend off moisture and layer-chafe. The 2.0’s flattering female-specific fit leaves room for layering and the ergonomic, welded design won’t fight you when you need to get dynamic. Pit vents offer relief when things warm up and waterproof-zippered pockets store your small items while you’re on the go.
Bottom Line: The Stoic 2.0 Shell weathers the storm.
It looks cool and has nice design lines, however, I found the arm pit opening too tight. The only way it was comfortable moving my arms around was with the pit zips open. Even with a light layer, the arm opening was way too tight. The body of the jacket fit just fine, but sent it back because of the restrictive feel under the arms. Instead I went with the Outdoor Research Mithral jacket which has better fit all around.
Got this on SAC for the wife after I got mine and she loves it. Replaces an older MH rain jacket that never fit right. Very female oriented cut that looks great on her, and the chocolate color is even nicer looking in person. This jacket is a little muggy down here in the south, but just about everything is. Burly fabric and the welded seams make it look like you spent a lot more for it. Haven't had any issues with performance yet. The only thing I would improve on this jacket would be to put a wire in the brim of the hood to give it a little more rigidity. Aside from that, great buy especially on SAC.
Can a softshell be zipped into this shell? Would this shell be a good one for <0 (negative degree ) weather. I am looking for a good outer shell to take to the Himalayas in February.
I have to say that this jacket is extremely high quality. It is warm, great in the rain (I live in Seattle), quiet, and very comfortable. The size is right on for my marmot firefly fleece underneath, 5'7, 140 and I bought a medium. I got mine off of SAC but wouldn't hesitate to pay full is price. If you have been on the fence about this jacket, get off and buy it, you wont regret it.
I saw this jacket on sale and it was definitely worth the money. I'm 5'7" and 140 lbs and I got a medium, which fits fine with a sweater or light fleece underneath, but not with a down vest, a thick fleece or multiple layers. I like the semi-stretchy fabric and it seems fairly water resistant so far but I wouldn't wear it for heavy rain. I like how it is designed and cut, quite flattering. I disagree with the previous reviewer about not wearing it with light layers or only for climbing; in fact I wouldn't wear it for that but that might be just me.
this jacket is beautiful and has a very nice shape to it, but unfortunately it fit a little too tight. even for the large, so I had to return it. (but returns are easy)
This is a full, waterproof breathable shell, while the shift is a softshell. Softshells aren't really waterproof, but have a water repellent coating on the outside surface. On the other hand, waterproof breathable garments don't breathe as well. It's really a matter of what conditions you're going to use the jacket for. The stoic is better for all around use and wetter conditions, while the shift might be better for drier, higher output activities.
I bought this jacket with the intent to use it as a shell to get me to/from the gym (with a light layer underneath). When I got the jacket I found that the way the pattern is cut with the drop shoulder and the underarm zip, those things cause it to cut extremely high into my armpit. It would feel ok if my arms were at a 90 degree angle at all times, but the minute you put your arms down...YIKES, it digs right in there!
I am actually an outerwear technical designer and work on fitting/patterns for outerwear jackets for a living; I don't know how the other reviewers thought the fit was great. Maybe they climb for a living and have their hands up all the time or wear huge sweaters that push the jacket away from the body. If you plan on buying it to wear with light layers underneath, I'd pass on this jacket.
Other people recommend to order a size up, but I found the medium to fit true to size to layer a down sweater underneath. (But it gets pretty poofy if I layer my very fluffy down vest underneath.) The fit is really flattering and both the sleeves and the torso are long enough to prevent drafts. The hood is cavernous (though probably not sized for a ski helmet) but has good adjustment. My only concern is that the hardware isn't very burly; I'm worried that the zippers or the drawcords will break. But the tradeoff is the weight, which I'm willing to sacrifice for. All in all I really like this coat.
How would you classify this jacket? My sister-in-law is looking for a wind- breaker/water resistant/ warm jacket for the cool Northern Florida windy mornings on her way to school.
Its probably a bit more intense than that... I mean, its got welded seams, and is 20K/15K for water/wind. Don't get me wrong, it will be wonderful and cute and great for your sister-in-law, but its not as much an "around town" jacket as it is a "mountain girl" type of thing. Its your call, cause thats a stellar price and its always better to have a better jacket that works than a crappy one that doesn't. :)
This jacket is awesome, especially at $68. DEFINITELY SIZE UP. For comparison, I usually wear an XSmall Patagonia, Small if I'm layering, but I took a Medium in the Stoic 2.0 (I'll be layering).
I'm looking to order the Mountain hardware black down coat and was wondering if I need a shell like this one to go over it. I was planning on getting the small down coat and getting a medium shell. Would that be a good choice? Do I even need to get a shell with the down coat I am purchasing?
Not sure which Mountain Hardwear jacket you were looking at, but I would suggest layering with a down sweater and you guessed, smaller layers underneath covered by a larger shell.
I bought this shell for my girlfriend to wear over her Siphon wool hoody, the combination of those two jackets is absolutely wonderful, and this shell is top notch. I've waited a few months to review this because I wanted to see how it performed for her in different types of weather, to say the least it has been flawless - she has had nothing but wonderful things to say about this shell. The fit is true to the sizing charts and the quality is top notch.
This is a great shell but WAY small...consider sizing up 2x if you want to wear a down or bulky fleece under it. fabric seemed sturdy/durable but the sizing is crazy...
Would you use this shell as a top layer for skiing/snowboarding on cold windy days with let's say a fleece and a merino first layer under? I need to be warm; sitting on a windy chairlift without a warm jacket isn't fun at all...
for sure! hood isn't exactly helmet compatable so if you like to pull something over your head on the lifts (and you wear a helmet) this might not be the best, but it's solid, pretty light, and goes great with a down sweater (see backcountry luft 800) for super cold days or a lighter fleece or merino for some warmer ski weather. pit zips are a must on all ski jackets i own and i like that these aren't huge and bulky, just big enough for some ventilation without feeling like you'll fly away in a gust of wind. the sleeve cuffs are pretty nice, but there's no pow skirt and the drawstring at the hem isn't the burliest i've had- it doesn't truly bother me but again, it's something to consider. size up for sure if you want to layer. hope this helps! PRAY FOR SNOW.
Hurricane proof rain jacket. I camped in this jacket during a hurricane and it stayed dry the whole time. My only complaint is the stretchy part on the cuffs, my shirt underneath ended up with wet cuffs. The fit is great, it comes right below my hips. Great big hood, it should work well for ski season too.
nice shell. kind of short. if you plan on layering, size up. elastic around bottom hem doesn't pull super tight, and since there's no powder skirt i worry i'll get a bit cold if it's windy or i take a spill. on the positive side, zippers are smooth and smartly designed. construction seems bomber so far. nice shape for a women's jacket. for the price i'd say it's one of the best. sure, fancier shells are out there but not for $115. layer this with a down sweater or fleece for chilly days and you'll be happy, warm, and dry :-)
The length on this jacket is a bit longer than standard. Many jackets when you lift your arms will rise up quite a bit. This one doesn't lift as much as most other jackets.
Bombproof. The material is thick and strong, way more burly than I had expected. The jacket is nice and waterproof and seems like it would perform in a variety of conditions. Skiing, touring, hiking, sitting in the rain, camping or anything else. The cut is feminine and small. I'm 5'7" 115lbs and the small fits just perfectly. If I were any taller it would be too short. The arms are just long enough for me. The hood is well designed and comes right over my face to protect from wind and rain. Its cut like a gore-tex ski shell, but doesn't seem like it should be limited to just skiing. I intially bought it to be my around town/camping/hiking rain jacket as I already have an arcteryx shell for skiing. I might go ahead and use this one instead, as the cut of this one is less boxy and more flattering than my arcteryx beta AR.
Just received this jacket in time to use it on a Wind River trip. It didn't rain as much as I anticipated, but in the moments that it did rain, this jacket was Awesome! I love the feminine cut, it is very flattering. It is true to fit yet roomy enough to layer. I did layer my Backcounrty Down Sweater under it comfortably. It is a great addition to my jacket collection! I am in love...
I spot cleaned this jacket with a bit of soap and water. From experience use a dry detergent to wash any waterproofing materials, then hang dry. Avoid fabric softners and liquid detergents because it breaks down the fabric. I use nikwax if I have killed my garments. http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/products/productdetail.php?productid=4
You should be able to machine wash cold with mild detergent. There doesn't appear to be material in the jacket that will be ruined from washing it. And it does come equipped with a lifetime warranty, meaning it's built tough, and you could probably wash it and be just fine.
jacket construction is good. fit is nice. ended up ordering a med when my gf normally wears small and that seems to be right fit considering all the layering under neath.
maybe a powder skirt would of been nice for snow sports
I love the color. I got it in chocolate. I live in SE Alaska, rains all the time, and I haven't had any troubles yet! My only trouble was with the zipper, that broke about a month after I got it. But no worries - I got it fixed and would still recommend this jacket to any and everyone. Great feminine cut - fits true to size. However, if you want to layer, order up a size.
How comparable is backcountry.com sizing to arc'teryx? Also, I is there another jacket comparable to the Stoic? I am in need of very versatile rain jacket, but want to be able to use it for any activity that may come my way.
i own arcteryx in medium (5'9 140) and backcountry in a medium. however, this jacket i exchanged for a large so i can layer with a light down sweater or fleece underneath. this was mostly because i felt like it was too short so if you're not tall this might not be an issue for you.
I don't own this specific jacket, but intend to purchase it soon. I do, however, own multiple backcountry.com jackets. I have found that all of their jackets are incredibly true to there measurement chart. I also am a huge fan of their feminine and figure flattering form.
love this jacket. Lots of outdoor brands dont make their womens clothes to fit like women's clothes. They eyed up being kinda baggy and not flattering. This jacket looks so great though. It definitely fits like a female jacket. Also, the quality is amazing. Water bounces off of it and wind doesn't make it through either. Great jacket! It looks great, and it works great too!
Wow, what a well conceived and constructed jacket. just got it and have yet to wear it, but this weekend's rain and wind will be welcomed. looks like bombproof welded seams, solid fabric, good pocket placement. nice fit for my shape: 38" on top, 31" waistband. great color, zipper not white, more like taupe. really glad i bought it -- looking forward to nasty weather !
but does fit small so do orde a size up. I ordered a small and should ahve gotten a medium. Also, if you are ordering from Canada, once you've paid shipping, tarrifs, customs and exchange rate... not worth the money. You can get an arteryx cheaper at home
Okay, so the colors are kinda bland for me, but the jacket fits super well. I am an XS and this jacket fits great in the sleeves and scoops a little lower in the butt so when I bend over the back doesn't ride up. The cut fits like a glove in the neck and blocks wind around my chin. Hood is awesome - not sure if I can fit my helmet yet. This jacket is perfect to pack because its light weight. No rain or slush gets through with the welded seams. The only thing I would like to see with this jacket is possibly a skirt and wrist gators for skiing. It would be an unstoppable shell with those features. Either or, I love it even if it is poop brown.
