Looking like a teched-out gear diva all the time can be a little tiresome—leave the Tron-look at home with your ski boots and opt for the unassuming Backcountry.com Women's Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket when it's time for some post-ski-day diversions. Extremely warm for its weight and naturally wind- and water-resistant, the Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket takes over as your around-town go-to piece and pulls double duty as a shell on clement days up at the resort or in the backcountry. Fleece-lined, zippered hand-warmer pockets offer refuge for chilly digits, while the zippered chest pocket keeps tabs on your cell phone, keys, and other small items. Pull the raw-edged, ergonomic hood up over your noggin when the evening breeze picks up, and thank our designers for adding a warmth-retaining inner cuff to the Wool Hooded Jacket's sleeves.
Bottom Line: Don't let the looks deceive you; the Backcountry.com Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket is just modest about its techy side.
At first I was a bit scared while purchasing this item as the description wasn't the greatest. I'm not the biggest wool fan because it itches me like there's no tomorrow. Somewhere on this site it says in small printing that it's fleece lined, but I wasn't sure if it was only in the pockets or all over. In all actuality, it's fleece lined everywhere, so the fact that it's wool doesn't bother me in the slightest. It's warm, fuzzy, and my new favourite hoodie for chillin' after a day of shredding.
It's also nicely fitted in the back so you don't look like a whale or like you swiped your bro's stuff.
I really love how this jacket looks, and I am getting mixed messages on the reviews of how warm it actually is. I live in central new york, and I would love it if this jacket was warm enough to get me through the winter. does anyone think that it will?
It is a warm jacket. I would would also wear a layer underneath if you were use it in cold conditions. I would recommend going with the siphon primaloft hooded jacket. One of my favorites
This is not the $140 on sale for $80 wool jacket I wanted. And I sooo wanted one! This is more like a sweater weight coat- maybe even a light sweater. This is not like the thick ibex jackets that you can actually wear on a chilly shoulder season day. I would buy this jacket for a sale price of 40 bucks, but it's not worth the 80 I found it for on SAC, and definitely not the 140 BC.com is trying to sell it for.
It has a raw seam on the hood which I didn't realize, which is cute but dresses it down. The fit is cool, and I like the length in back, but the zipper bulges out if I don't sit up straight.
If you're willing to shell out the change for an off-brand but stylish quasi-wool jacket (it's woven wool threads glued to a thin poly interior that's not even fluffy; I wanted thick boiled wool), be my guest.
This jacket was not what I thought I was paying for.
Never have I had a jacket fit so awesome. I'm tall, with the whole long arm, long torso thing going on. This jacket fits soooooo good, no more ass crack when bending over. Love the warmth, and it gets darn cold here in Jackson Hole. Kudos!
Mmmm.... thank you for the review. I am right near you and always looking for warm clothing for what I consider to be "truly" cold winters... i.e. -5 to -20 for months on end. Much appreciated, neighbor!
Does anyone know when Backcountry rolls out it's new models for next season? I'm looking for the Men's siphon hoodie but they're out of lots of sizes...
It depends on the product. The best thing to do is jump on "live chat" and ask those folks. They can actually look up the date the new product is expected to arrive. Hope that helps.
It's a flattering fit. It's soft on the inside. It's good quality. It's plenty long enough including in the sleeves. The hood fits all the way over my head. I don't have any complaints. I absolutely love it. It's plenty warm enough to use with under layers or as a layer under a heavier coat. I like that it's fairly thin but still lined. I might order another one in a different color.

I just bought this Siphon wool hoodie. I love it so much that I find myself sleeping in it. What's the best way to wash this thing without shrinking it to doll size? It's only 42% wool despite what the despription says. Am I at risk of turning it into a child's jacket if I throw in the washer on cold?
this jacket does not have a 100% wool outer layer as the description says. its primary content is cotton, wool is 4th after cotton poly and nylon. jacket looks cool, but cotton is lame for outodoor use. if you are looking for a cotton hoody this may be for you
I really love this jacket as a non-technical coat to wear around town in the winter. It's plenty warm for most of what southcentral Alaska dishes out and is super comfy and cozy. I love the fleece lining and, as others mention, it's not itchy at all! It's a little too bulky to use skiing, backpacking, etc. and I think there are better materials for warmth (i.e. primaloft) when weight and space are an issue. The cut is fitted and feminine and I usually get compliments when I wear it . . . nice to feel both cozy and stylish!
I think it's the napoleon pocket on the front. I have the Wool hooded jacket (non-siphon), and like everyone else, love the fit, warmth, hood, collar, sleeve and torso length, etc. But I bought it thinking there was a napolean pocket, and there's not.
I was skeptical, but went for it. This is not a winter jacket. It's way lighter than an Ibex, but perfect for sitting at the campfire on a cold night or bumming around town on a cool spring day when its warm in the sun and very cool in the shade (I live at elevation). I find that when my house is cool at night I wear it to bed. Its not scratchy like you would imagine a wool jacket to be because it's only 42% wool. I was first disappointed to read that on the tag, but have fallen in love with and wear the jacket so much that I'm afraid it's starting to get stinky. Stay tuned for washing instructions. I just asked BC for them.
Love it!! This is a fantastic jacket-perfect for a multitude of activities including cruising 'round town. It is nicely fitted and is the perfect length. You won't be disappointed.
How is the length on this jacket? I'm 6 feet tall and wear a consistant medium in patagonia and other gear brands. I just ordered the backcountry shift softshell and am sending it back because it's weirdly short. Is this jacket the same story?
I Love Love Love this jacket!! I have only had it for a week and I`ve received enough compliments to make me want to get the other color! Its warm enough for a cold Northern Michigan Autumn and its SO comfy! I love it!!!
I got this jacket because my boyfriend has the men's version and LOVES it. I originally ordered the moss but when it arrived it was a weird yellow pea soup color. I liked the fit so I returned it for the cocoa color.
I got this jacket for my girlfriend and she wears it all the time. It is a great fall and spring jacket, and has a great fit for females. I think that it probably runs a little big, as I got her a S and it fits well even though she is about 5'6". I got her the 'berry' color and she loves it. I wouldn't recommend it for wet conditions, as I wouldn't think the wool would hold up very well to a lot of moisture.
From the description I thought this would be a warmer jacket, but I do like it a lot. I wear it when I bike 5 blocks to work and it's comfortable above 45 degrees. Nice and cozy for just being out and about.
I got this jacket for my wife and it fits very true to size with her height and weight. It is slim fitting and very comfortable. She loves to wear it in casual settings.
I had been looking for something like this for a while and got lucky on Steep&Cheap. I'm about 5'2", small build and I got the XS in the brown-- fits great and looks nice!
I wear this jacket all the time: as my primary jacket on 45-60 degree days, skiing as a midlayer, to class, and to bed (in my apartment and no, I'm not passing out drunk). As someone already mentioned, the inside is lined with a kind of quilted fleece material so the wool doesn't touch your skin.
The zipper on this jacket has to potential to be zipped up all the way to under your nose, thus creating a kind of hot-female-Kenny-from-South-Park look when the hood is up. It's a nice feature if it's freezing out, but not a hindrance or problem at all during other the rest of the time.
The only negative that I would say about this jacket is, as with most wool, it's handwash only. I'm too scared to see if it would actually be okay in the washing machine, but its really sturdy so it might.
I really like this hoodie, it fits really well and looks good. What I don't like about this jacket is how expensive it was for not being that warm. I read reviews saying it's warm but I need to wear another hoodie under it to keep from feeling the cold and wind. I'm keeping it but wouldn't recommend it for cold winter months really. It's more of a fall/spring jacket in my opinion.
I love this jacket. Warm and cozy and soft on the inside although wool on outside. I like that it is form fitting which is much more flattering. Runs fairly true to size though if you consider the fact it is fitted. I wear this jacket everyday (May), although it is Wisconsin.
