Backcountry.com Siphon Street Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt - Mens
The Siphon Men's Street Hoody incorporates technical function in an under-the-radar style—this wool-blend hoody pulls double duty as an insulating mid-layer, and a go-to jacket for kickin' it around town. A touch of wool helps the Street hold wind chill at bay, while the slightly-fitted cut and hidden thumb-holed cuffs take the bunch out of layering on wet days when you need to bust out a shell. Detailed paneling serves up a bit of urban radness, while an unobtrusive Goat logo shows the love.
Wearing it right now. So comfy, looks and feels like cotton, but it is so much more! Trimmer fit, long arms, I am 6'2" 180lbs and the large fits me perfectly. Go bigger on size if you want a roomier fit. I through it in the drier and it did not shrink.
I like the style and fit which is similar to most backcountry stuff (I'm 6'2" 180 and the large fits well.) It looks good and I like the thumb holes. -- I got it on sale and I love it, but 110$ is pretty steep for a hoodie, so keep an eye on SAC or for sales.
I'm not a big guy, 5'9" 140lbs, so I decided to try the medium out, but got here and it was a little restricting but otherwise great hoody/mid layer. Since it was a little small, I exchanged it for a large, so order a size up. Can't wait for the snow to fly and wear this around campus for those preseason teasers!
This is a really cool hoody - it's got a nice athletic fit (just like all other BC apparel) and the material is thick and warm enough to wear alone over a baselayer down into the mid 30's. It's also pretty attractive casually, though the tight fit might look a little goofy with baggy jeans or something. Anyway, my only issues are that it pills really fast - after only a handful of wears, and there's no waist draw-string. The pilling isn't really an issue for me as I only wear it hiking and the lack of a drawstring isn't a big deal since it's tight fitting anyway. Definitely not worth full price but for 50 or under it's a good deal.
This hoody is crazy comfy! I wear it nearly all the time (right now, for example). The materials are winner and the fit is great. Thumb hole/wrist cuff is a nice touch. Definitely would not have paid full price ($110) for it, but $40 off of SAC is WELL worth it. Only issues I have: only 10% wool, so wind proofing is not that great, mesh hand pockets (not a big deal, but not too desirable either), and no waist drawstring. I'm 6'1", about 160 lbs and the L fits perfect. Great fit for casual wear around, or a mid-layer technical-ish. Haven't washed it yet, so I can't say how that how goes. All-in-all, another great piece from BC.
Has anybody ignored the washing instruction label and tossed this thing in the dryer? If so, did it shrink up, get all deformed, or pill like crazy? I wouldn't mind if it shrank a little but i don't want it to get all screwed up.
Perhaps not "like crazy" but there was some pill'age when I ran mine through the dryer for a bit. I've only washed it twice and now I air dry if it needs drying at all.
This hoody is super comfy and seems to be very well built. However, there is NO WAY it is worth the regular price. This is nothing more than a nice, stylish comfy hoody. There is nothing technical about it, and I doubt it would do much for you in harsh weather. There is barely any wool in it, so it seems a little cheap that they advertise it as such. All this being said, I paid just over $30 dollars for it on SAC, which was a great deal. If you can get it for that, I think its worth 5 stars. Anything more, and you will be disappointed. Also should mention that I sized up based on some of the reviews, but I don't think it was necessary. Wash however you want...it wont shrink.
When this jacket first came, I didn't take it off for almost a whole week. It feels great against the skin and it kept me warm on some days in the 30s just running around town. That being said, I got this for 50 bucks of steepandcheap and I would NEVER pay full price for it. I love the thing, but 110 for a mainly casual, mainly polyester hoody? You have got to be kidding me. If you can find a good deal on it, grab one quick. If not, I'm not sure this is worth it
www.steepandcheap.com (SAC for short)I think you'll be wanting an XL, though i'm not overly familiar with this piece. The sizing chart above should be helpful.
I'll admit I got it off SAC, not sure I'd pay full price on this item. That being said I LOVE this hoody. I've worn it a few times in mid 30's and felt fine. I just wore it as a mid layer for an alleycat where temps were in the single digits and I was toasty! The hood is a more technical fit so it fit in my shell hood perfectly. It also fit under my bike helmet. The thumb holes kept the sleeves down while I was riding and at the after bar I got comments on it's style as well. I'm 6'1" 190 and the Large fit perfectly. The mesh pockets don't bother me because if it's cold enough that you're concerned about your hands either wear gloves or put on more layers (over or under this trim-fitted piece.) 11-09 Update: I'm loving this piece so much I bought a second one (also off SAC) in blue! My Graphite (really it's black) hoodie of just under a year old has been used a TON and even though I've gone down hard twice off my bike in this thing it's only wear is a little pilling from the one time I threw it in the dryer.
This is a great product so far, I have had it for a little more than a week and have worn it 3 days so far. It is a great layering piece. I like using the thumb holes to hold the arms in place when pulling my softshell overtop. It is thinner than the average sweatshirt but is just as warm if not warmer. I am 5' 11 3/4" 185 athletic build and purchased a Large. I must say I like the shape and cut of this sweatshirt but it could be slightly smaller. I have thought about trying the Medium but I don't want it to be to tight and restrictive. This was my first Backcountry.com product and all and all I am pleased although I would not pay more than I did for it (under $60 shipped). I am hoping to pick up more Backcountry.com products as I see them on SteepandCheap.com.....Hopefully the Welder softshell in time.
At 6'4" and 210 lbs I have a little trouble worrying about thumb loops on a sweatshirt. Up until now, I've never had sleeves get close to my thumbs. Needless to say I was thrilled to find my XXL hoodie had no trouble getting to the ends of my arms. I'll admit, I've got a little extra room in the torso, and SAC made the price better, but I love this sweatshirt.
I'd give it a 3 mostly because of the fit. The quality seems ok, but I'm not crazy about the fit. I'm 6'0 200lbs and pretty stocky I guess. This XL sweatshirt is a bit too slim fitting through the torso for my taste, but if that's the style you like, it may suit your needs. I'm not heavy in the waist or stomach, but this style might be a bit tight for anbody with a belly. The arms are plenty long and have the inner thumb hole which is a nice feature. The hood is spacious, but why the pocket linings needed to be mesh I have no idea; maybe to keep the weight down. Overall, I do like the sweatshirt, and I suppose for $50.00 on SAC it was a fair deal. Just stay clear if you prefer a loose fitting style sweatshirt.
This is a well made and well designed garment, and quite comfortable. It's breathable and still highly wind resistant and warm (I just wore it on a tower during a photo shoot and it was just right). The pockets are not lumpy and have good zips, so you won't dump your keys or phone when scrambling about. I have the blue color, as it is pretty mellow and feels a little vintage. I did get a discount, so it wasn't too expensive (can't hurt to ask). It's true, that if you have a belly that you want to disguise, you might need a size up, but I wear a Large, and it's true to size as far as length, sleeves. Generally, I really like this sweatshirt.
Great hoody, I'm 5'11'' 185 and the XL was a good fit for me. I would never pay $109 for a hoody and you should not either. SAC price is the right price.
yes, considerably high. If you look at the womens version you are able to see what it looks like fully zipped. http://www.backcountry.com/store/BCC0180/Backcountry-Siphon-Wool-Hooded-Jacket-Womens.htmlof course the cut is different.
nice styling, good fit, and warm. be forewarned that it doesn't feel like a polyester/wool blend, it feels more like a run of the mill cotton fleece. also, the thumb holes are on an inside cuff, not on the outside of the jacket. i can see the value of that, but i felt the picture was a little misleading unless you look really close. i probably wouldn't buy this if i saw in the store. the customer service guys seem really cool about the whole situation and reminded me that i can return it for a full refund at any time because of the lifetime warranty.
I loved the first one so much that I turned right around and bought another! The monkey thumbs keep the sleeves from riding up and since they are inside the cuff, my hand can stay all bundled up inside. I have a 43 inch chest and the large was a great fit. Its not loose but stretches well. Curious about the bagginess of the XL, I decided to order one of those too. It doesn't give me a whole lot of extra room but does fit a little baggy. Also I wear a size 33 in jeans, so I am not a slim goat skinny goat. If you are, then go for the large! ITS FREAKIN SICK!
Really good material, its a slim fit sweatshirt. I was really happy when I saw the thumb-holes on the sleeve. I recommend it for street wear or layering it on any cold day out in the mountains!
Love it!! I like the thumb holes on the sleeves, the warmth of it and the way it feels to your skin. Slim fit! If you are a little overweight it might look funny on you.
if you're tall and lean like me. Most sweatshirts turn into belly shirts after a couple washings. Not this one. Nice hand, good fit. I'll be wearing this baby a lot. Nice Job BC.com.
I was wondering the same thing, but it's 90% polyester and only 10% wool, so it shouldn't be a problem. I have a sweatshirt made of the same material that didn't shrink after one wash, but I really can't say for sure that this one won't.
Very nice and soft. Denim is a great color, not to dark and not to light. The cut of the sweatshirt is athletic so it hugs around the core, good ecxuse for doing situps. The hood pulls are different than regular sweatshirts, these are elastic with a plastic spring clip to hold them tight. Overall I am pleased and have even gotten a few good complements on it.
This jacket lives up to the BC.com name. Well built and completely comfortable. I've been wearing it ever since I snagged it on SAC. Two little complaints: The pits ride a little tight but not annoyingly so and the neck is a bit high for everyday use but is nice in cold weather. This is my new favorite jacket. Maybe not worth the full price but at a discount I would recommend it to anyone!
Just got this hoody from SAC. I agree with the rest of the reviewers, I would never pay full price for it. This thing is incredibly comortable. I usually avoid cotton at all costs, this thing is not cotton but feels like your old favorite hoody that's been washed a million times. I am 5'11", 250LBS, I ordered the XXL based on my experience with BC's shift softshell. This runs a little bigger. If I inteded to layer with it I would definitely go down to the XL. The arms feel pretty long but are pretty much just right if you use the thumb holes. I love the high chin for when you need the extra warmth. Bottom line, stalk this hoody on SAC and buy it!
I just picked this thing up from backcountry and I have not been able to take off. It's so comfortable, warm and good looking too. It's great for layering or just hanging out.
The graphite is waaaay black. I've checked the tag a few times and it does say graphite, but it looks black to me.----------I second Brian on this, I have "Graphite" and if it's not black, then the official black must suck the light out of a room.
I'm a pretty small dude(5'7" and 130 lbs.) and the small fits like a glove! It works awesome as a mid- ,or outer-layer, and I've gotten tons of compliments about the look. It is definitely fitted for some good ol' next-to-your-skin warmth. No drafts gettin in there! I gave 4 out of 5 for the price.
Nice hooded sweatshirt. Generous sleeve length and athletic fit in the body. Material tends to accumulate little fuzz balls that are impossible to get rid of. Works well as a mid-layer. Cinching hood is sweet. Worth the SAC price, but not more.
I was hoping for a little more edge to this hoodie. It's pretty much just that- a hoodie. While it performed well in spring skiing conditions, I'm generally not impressed by it's wind resistance (read: very little) or its water resistance (read: none) My largest complaint is that I've been wearing it for a week or so now, and already the fabric around the hands and neck is already piling. I'm going to trade up to the true siphon wool-blend jacket. All told though, as a hoodie, it can't be beat, but as a jacket, it needs a little something more. Fit: slim and good Design: lookin' sexy Wind and Water: mediocre to poor As a layer: pretty good
I read all the reviews. I'm 5'10", 185. I wear size 34 pants (36 in dress pants)... so I'm not all that slim. I got the Large and, while it fit perfect in the shoulders and upper body, it was huge around my stomach. Huge as in not even remotely "fitted." I may have just gotten a badly made hoody... who knows. I bought it on SAC, but I tried chatting with the backcounty customer support agents twice and both times they asked a million questions about what sizes I wear and then refused to exchange it (for another Large). Very disappointed. I wanted to love this hoody but now I must send it back. If you're buying this from SAC keep in mind you're responsible for shipping both ways even if they ship you a bad product.
What size should I get? I'm 5'11" 165lbs...fairly thin. I normally wear between a medium and a large. I like the mediums, but the arms are sometimes too short; larges tend to be too bulky through the chest
my brother got it, hes 6'2" about 180, the xl fits him perfect, the waist cut may be a little short but he has a long torso. he has very long arms and they fit nice. he wore it boarding to test it out, not the best for blocking wind but a great hoodie regardless.
Just got my jacket two days ago and I already love it. I have been looking for a good fleece to layer inside my Arc'Teryx Sigma SV and this one does the trick. The slim fit matches the shell perfectly and the hidden thumb loops are awesome. The price is a little high, but hey, I got it on SAC so I know I got a good deal.
My primary gripe is that the outside fabric started to pill up after wearing it about ten times. Also, I have to jam my hands into the pockets, they could have slightly larger openings.
Still, it has a great cut and is my first choice of the dozen or so hoodies I own. I am 5'-7" 155 Lbs and a medium fits comfortably but isn't baggy anywhere.
In live in San Francisco and have been looking for a good hoodie for when the fog rolls in at the beach and generally kicking around...this hoodie is it..has a good slim fit does not feel like it has wool in it and has good features, mesh lined pockets for vents, inside pockets and a chest pocket for tunes. This has definitely become on of my take it with me when the temps are cool jackets, though I have not used it this way yet, I'm sure it will be perfect under my shell for snow-boarding...
it is NOT a soft shell so the wind does blow though it a bit...
Over all: This zip up is great. It is very soft and light weight. It is not at all wind-proof, but it is nice for layering and pretty stylish. It is super duper comfortable, the hood is a good size (not one of those massive hoods that some hoodys have), and the internal thumbholes on the sleeves are a great addition.
Color: Some reviewers said that the Denim Color was purple, but the one I got was similar to the pictured color. Maybe a bit more grayish blue. Also the Graphite is basically black. Or at least the darkest gray ever.
Fit: I am one of those people who is always in-between sizes (5'8" 155) so I ordered a medium and a large. The medium fit well, but only if I was wearing a t-shirt underneath. Anything else and it is too snug. The large was more like a jacket, and a bit longer. I kept the medium because I plan to wear it as a light jacket with only a T underneath. But they do seem to run a bit small, so if you are in between sizes and you don't like your stuff to be tight, go a size up.
I love this thing. The fit is amazing (5'8" 140lbs) and I have gotten many compliments on it. It is a little pricey, and I don't know how much the 10% wool helps, but if you can catch it on sale, it's definitely worth buying. I got the graphite expecting a dark gray jacket. It's definitely black, which is fine, I like black, just not what I was expecting. I imagine the only way to tell it's not black is to hold it up to the "Black" version. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is that the material on the arms started to pill up a bit after only a half dozen wears (and maybe 1 wash) and I don't use it for anything active so I was not expecting this.
Perfect sweatshirt for those cold california mornings. The sweater is really comfy and the fit is good except for the arms which are reaaally long. I have fairly long arms but that didn't help. Still nice though :)
One of my favorite things to wear in any season. I ended up getting a large (5'11" 170) and it is pretty nice, almost a little roomy. Pretty warm for how thin it is, I was a little shocked at how thin it actually is. My only vice is that the material pills like crazy. My wife and I spent an hour just trying to pick all the little fuzz balls off after I washed it. Other than that, super comfy, oh so stylish, and warm enough without making you sweat. buy it
I absolutely LOVE these hoodies. From lounging to layering they are perfect and ohhh so comfortable. (I'm wearing one right now) My only concern is that the build is not the best on them. As long as your not out trekking though the woods you should be fine. The fit is athletic. Medium fits me perfect. 6' 165 lbs. Get it on SAC if you can!
I bought this off of steepandcheap.com for about $50, which is a fair price. I would not recommend paying full price for this though. It is comfortable, and has an athletic fit which is what I was looking for. I am 5'11, and bought a medium. I am not a huge fan of the mesh pockets. The thumb holes were also nothing great. I can't really think of a good use for them, but it is not like they get in the way. The lining is very soft. This is a great hoody to wear in the fall or spring, or to wear indoors.
This is a very nice sweatshirt for the price. It'll be great for the fall and early spring and will work for layering in the winter. Only issue is that the medium was too small. Usually, large is a little too big for my 5' 11", 165 lb frame. Highly recommended, however.
I am 5'10 with an athletic frame and had to go with a Large. The cut is definitely slim, but even with a large the sleeves fit perfect. I wear this hoodie way too much, and the only downside I have found is the pockets are mesh inside, so they don't serve well as hand-warmers.
Great zip-up hoodie. I normally wear a large in backcountry brand stuff so I went with a large in this. I'm 6'1" 175 pounds and it fits well, although it is a little less fitted at the bottom than some other stuff from this brand. Still fits well though. It didn't shrink in the wash like some others are saying, although I kind of wish it would have a little this time. Oh and this doesn't really feel exactly like a cotton hoodie, you can tell it has a little wool in it- other reviewers must have bought knock-offs in an alley somewhere or something......
i ordered a medium for a 5'11" thin, 175lb guy. sleeves long enough but shoulders too narrow. i also thought the fabric would be a little thicker, considering the price. its not worth the money, maybe closer to 50. the color 'denim' is also more purple than pictured.
Extremely comfortable to lounge around in all day, but also nice enough to wear out and about in town.
Definitely an 'athletic' cut, so plan accordingly. 5'9" & 165 lbs and I went with the Medium. Close fitting in the torso (which I like) but w/ the thumbhole inner cuffs, the sleeves have a bit more length to them than your standard hoodie, but still reasonable.
Didn't give it 5 stars for 2 reasons... #1 is the price -- if it wasn't for SAC, I definitely would not have paid full price for this. #2 is the mesh inner pockets... some might prefer them, but I can't stand the feel of them. Those complaints aside, an overall great hoodie and would recommend it to anyone the next time it pops up on SAC
I bought this sweater in a small (I'm 5'8"ish and 127 lbs.), and it is pretty tight under the arms. The sleeve and torso lengths are perfect, but it feels a little too tight under the arms.
I decided to keep the small, and deal with it rather than try to get the medium (can't find a medium sized denim for the price I want).
This is a way overpriced hoody. You can't really tell that it's wool. The thumb loops are also really tight. The fit is just right for active use. I'm 6'0" , 175 lbs and the large had room for two base layers. Overall just realize this is similar material to an under armour and although the design is nice the material doesn't hold up. Even the SAC price of $50 is well, steep.
Got this fleece blend a couple days ago and i didn't pay $79 for it... thank you SAC. I would pay $35 if I were to get it again. I'm 6'0" 165 lbs, and pretty slim; The Medium fits great. I feel that the thumb-holes are pointless... they're tiny for my fat fingers, and the sleeve covers the holes, up past my knuckles... making my hands relatively unusable. I like the weird stitched design across the front, but the color does, as other reviews warned, appear purple, especially against blue jeans. I don't mind purple, but I wouldn't pay 60 bucks for it again. The pockets are also mesh... so.. bring gloves if on a chilly spring hike! Other than those negatives, the fit is great, and I love the hood. It can really cinch down tight, and the zipper has the option of coming all the way up to one's chin or over their mouth if it gets too chilly. Hope this helps!
Excellent purchase. I was looking for a full zip hoodie that I could wear in all seasons, and this definitely fits the bill. It has the comfort of a hoodie (actually better), but the features/warmth of a performance jacket.
In terms of size this thing is very tailored, so consider a size up if you want to layer with more than just a long/short sleeve teeshirt. I am 5'10", 160lbs with a 34 inch waist, and the Medium is as snug as it gets. I even kept the tags on for a few days while contemplating an exchange for a large, but stayed with the medium. Good decision.
Bottom line is I'm very happy with this item and have been wearing it non stop. I would happily suggest this over any generic full zip hoodie.
I like the jacket a lot, and wear it quite a bit. Just a few things irk me about it. Mesh front pockets....i can't even think of why you would design a sweatshirt with this unless you were trying to cut costs.
It's slightly better than having your hands exposed.
Other than that, you might want to order a size up if you're a bigger person. Im slim and it fits me well volume-wise, but another inch or two of length wouldn't hurt.
Other than those things, it's a good jacket....about $50-$60 good.
Very soft and comfortable! It is tailored for a more athletic fit, which is nice to not have baggy material getting caught on things when out hiking. I'm 6'1" and 190 and the large fits well, I would wait for it on SAC though
I'd give this product 4 out of 5. I'm 6'3" 200lbs. so the XL is a perfect fit. I like the high chin zip and the contoured fit. My one beef is that after one wash it collects these tiny lint balls that are near impossible to get off. Maybe if I used the dryer it might help but due to its wool content I'm afraid it might shrink. Even a tiny bit would ruin the fit for me. all in all...good product.
I love the technical fit, especially in the hood (can't stand hoodies that don't cover my whole head). It feels good, I'd have to agree that it feels like cotton, but the 10% wool mix gives me a little extra confidence that this thing could retain some warmth even when wet. As it is the Siphon Street Sweatshirt is warm and does a decent job blocking the wind, I've been wearing it as a mid layer under various jackets in the heart of winter in the Wasatch, very nice. Being partially wool, there has been some pilling after a couple months, but it hasn't reduced the functionality. The thumb holes seem little too small for my thumbs, which I didn't expect, they still help keep my hands warm though.
This isn't a burly-feeling hoody, but it does a good job in keeping me warm and for layering so I like that actually. I love its design - thumb loops, 3 panel hood that actually covers my head, chest pocket for my iPod and the color (denim for me) - but I think it's way overpriced.
