Backcountry.com Siphon Primaloft Hooded Jacket - Women's

Wish you had a micro-puff that didn’t make you look like an astronaut? Goodbye neon puff, hello Backcountry.com Women’s Primaloft Hooded Jacket. The Siphon Primaloft’s flattering but functional fit and low-key utility leaves your old puffies sulking on the sidelines. The Siphon Primaloft Hooded Jacket functions like your favorite micro-puff, minus the in-town glory-seeking façade. This Primaloft insulator ain’t your standard “outdoorsy” uniform—Siphon takes backcountry tech and instills function in a form and style that flies under the radar when you leave the mountains. DWR-treated, mechanical stretch nylon ripstop fabric fends off light moisture on the street or on the hill, while lightweight, synthetic Primaloft insulation holds precious body heat close. A fully-adjustable hood provides shelter when the elements gnash their teeth, and the ergonomic, women’s-specific fit and articulated arms stay put when you flail off a hit, or go for the high-ten when you meet your ladies at the bar. Low-key logo hits show the love without shouting about it.

Bottom Line: Steathly tech plus a large serving of style.

Good fit, lightweight and warm

By:
January 26, 2009

I love this jacket. It's a great alternative to a fleece (light rain and snow roll right off, stands up to light wind, dog hair doesn't congregate on the surface, etc.) for those cooler but not frigid temps in the fall/early winter here in New England. It's definitely not as warm down, so don't confuse this mid-layer jacket with a heavily insulated winter coat. I found the fit to be great - I'm a slim/average 5'8 with long limbs and a shorter torso, so sleeve length is almost always a problem for me, but the medium was a great fit for me.

How much does this jacket weigh? Also, in the pic Merlot looks kind of brown...in real life is it more, uh, wine colored and red?

In real life, the Merlot is really a brown, with the tiniest hit of red. They could have called it burgundy and gotten away with it, but Merlot is the wrong name for the color. I have the jacket in a medium and it weighs 17 ounces.

Great jacket

By:
February 2, 2009

I have been very pleased with this jacket! The synthetic down-like material is great--very warm, no itch or allergy worries, and it compacts nicely for packing around. The fit is great, too. Comes in a bit at the waist for a feminine look, good arm and torso length, true to size (I am 5'4", 140 pounds, and got a medium that fits perfectly). On super cold days, it also worked well to layer a heavy-weight fleece underneath. Nice full hood and soft, lined pockets. I got the cream color, which looks great and seems to clean up well so far. I love it!

Has anyone else had an issue with the Primaloft material pilling

Has anyone else had an issue with the Primaloft material pilling under the arms? I only had mine for a week before the under-arms started to deteriorate. I returned it for a new one, so I'm hoping this one was just defective...

Hi Jenna,PrimaLoft only makes the insulation inside the jacket. The pilling would only be on the outer fabric of the jacket which is not made by PrimaLoft

Best coat ever.

By:
February 2, 2009

I am always cold. Several years ago my boyfriend got a primaloft coat and for years I shivered in fleece while he rallied through anything. This coat is the answer to my prayers. I am 6 1 and this coat is not only long enough -- the hood fits my bongo head and tall neck comfortably. I usually buy a large, bought the XL in this and still fits slim. I've been wearing it all this frigid midwestern winter under my rain coat in lieu of a proper winter coat and its been just fine. It's so slim fitting that I wear it to work under my super fancy wool top coat to work and over my suit. I love it, love it, love. The green is flattering, a really nice shade. I found the merlot to be kind of blah, so returned it.

Hi, I'm always cold... but sweaty too. I need to try a synthetic jacket that will handle extreme cold negative temps with even more frigid windchills with stop and go activity. I'm on my horse, so shedding a layer every time I gallop and putting it back on to walk is not on option. Water resistant and ways to vent are essential too.Could this jacket work for me? If not, do you have one that will?

This will help as a layering option for you. A good base layer, this coat, then a shell is what I recommend.Hey Jennifer, I'm in the same boat as you (always cold). I love this jacket, but it is definitely not something for extreme negative temps (I was chilly with this over a sweatshirt and long sleeves when it was in the 20s). I'd consider this to be more like a water- and wind-resistant fleece, not a sub for a warmer coat.

Women's Siphon

By:
November 17, 2008

I just received this jacket and I love it! It is VERY lightweight, warm and soft. I was very happy with my purchase and would love to have it in another color. If you are looked for a reasonably priced, quality, warm, lightweight jacket, I would definitely consider this one.

nearly perfect

By:
December 29, 2008

this is a great jacket with a great fit. it's just as warm as any down jacket i have & it's much lighter & way less puffy. my only complaint is that it pills in the armpits which is a bummer. fyi- i usually wear a large, but wear an xl in this jacket. too bad there isn't a small interior pocket in it... otherwise it's nearly perfect & i'm a total gearhead!

I LOVE it!

By:
November 28, 2008

I love this jacket. I bought the backcountry.com wool jacket last year and absolutely love that one. The Siphon is cut more or less the same (this one's a tad shorter in the back than the wool).

For a jacket that's almost paper-thin, it keeps me very warm. It's also super packable, so I can shove it in my backpack and put it on when it starts raining.

The bonus is the fabric - I was walking the other day from brunch, and I got splattered by a bird and it wiped right off!

The sizing is probably slightly smaller than true, but I love how it fits me, it's very fitted and I get compliments every time I wear it. People recognize the quality even if they may not recognize the goat - at least not just yet!

I absolutely love both my backcountry.com jackets, I alternate just so I won't neglect one!

You could, but there is no powder skirt. If you look at the mens BC primaloft coat there is a good post detailing skiing in this type of coat

Got one of these for my girlfriend and she wears it everywhere. At first she thought it was too light-weight but it's way warmer than she thought. She's 5'9" and athletic, medium fits her perfectly. Cute, too.

It's a women's jacket. They're all women's sizes.------------------He may mean that whole 8, 10, 2, 0 stuff. If he does those numbers are meaningless from company to company anyway. Use the sizing chart right under the size/color options dropdown to gauge which size she needs.

Cute Jacket

By:
January 7, 2009

I bought this jacket in Dec. (Merlot color) but unfortunately I had to return it. I ordered a size small, and the fit was great, but the sleeves were too short for my liking. I think a medium would be better. I should mention that the Merlot color does have a red tint to it. A cute jacket and I wished it would've worked out.

I'm tall and thin and i have a heck of a time getting things long enough in the arms and torso and not be swimming around the middle ... how does this jacket fit in the sleeves and body?

I really love the fit of my Siphon. It has a longer tail and longer sleeves, exactly what I like to keep out the cold drafts. The body was fitted. Perfect for wearing under a shell and it looks great by itself.I think this would be a great jacket for you -- I'm also tall and thinner, and found the sleeve length to be great and the torso to be svelt. I'm 5'8ish and have a medium, and think it's a great fit.

excellent buy

By:
December 15, 2008

I purchased this coat for myself and it caused a serious jealousy issue with the old lady. I bought her this coat in cream and she's had a smile on her face ever since. It's nice and light but yet keeps you completely warm. In her words "it's like being wrapped up in a down comforter."

Insulator Jackets

By: Backcountry.com Employee
January 12, 2009

The selling point of this jacket: Packability. The siphon is an insulator jacket, and is meant to provide serious warmth in a clinch. Primaloft is made to be super lighweight, and rip-stop nylon is respective to that. This jacket is a spin-off of the Cloudveil Enclosure Hoody, and they are BOTH super great jackets. The Cloudveil has a bit more loft, but both are 100 g fill primaloft with nylon. This is a super all around jacket, and is quite water resistant. It is treatable with a spray on DWR anytime for care and water resistance. This jacket will suit you nicely if you dont like that puffy look. Again, this is a very successful hybrid jacket. Its meant to pack tight in your backpack on a winter trek, and to be a comfortable casual piece, and this is only possible with the primaloft. I wear the insulators ( Enclosure and Siphon) around town, and throw them under a hardshell waterproof/windproof if i want to get in the sub zero mercury. Get this jacket, or if you have muchos dineros, consider the Enclosure by Cloudveil.
