Don the Backcountry.com Rime Softshell Pullover and head out for an autumn trail run or a spring ski tour. With its stretchy, element-shunning Polartec Power Shield material and streamlined design, this softshell provides high-end performance—minus the sticker shock. The Rime Pullover heeds the call when you need a super-light, breathable shell for high-aerobic activities. This piece dumps heat when you're charging up the trail and blocks warmth-stealing ridgeline winds at the summit. Wear the Rime alone over a base layer or add another layer on top for a little extra warmth—the dynamic, fitted cut provides all kinds of options. Lined with a soft, wicking fleece layer, the Rime Pullover feels great whether you're on a trail run, or early-morning coffee run. Reflective Backcountry.com logos on the sleeve and collar prevent you from becoming roadkill during night-time jogs, and the welded chest pocket holds your wallet, keys, or energy gel close for easy access.
Bottom Line: When it comes to lightweight, high-aerobic performance, nothing holds a candle to the Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket.
This is a must have top for spring biking. Going to work, it has been about -5C while coming home the temps are usually 12-18C. I generally cruise at about 25kph. Zipped up in the mornings with just a single Icebreaker 140 T underneath there are almost no problems with the cold or wind. Coming home, I usually have it unzipped by about half way home and it works out perfectly. The only slight problem I have is that for some reason, my wrists get cold in the wind. Not sure if the windproof material is absent there, but that's the only place where I can feel any wind. Love the carrot color: it's a great orange - not too bright, not too subtle.
I love this jacket. I recently washed it under the specified instructions on the label. I stupidly used some Shout stain remover spray on a small part of the jacket to remove a small stain I have on the jacket. At the moment it has only been washed once, air dried, and is about 2 months old at max. Are there any recommendations for waterproofing sprays I can use to gain back my water-resistance ability I had on this jacket pre-wash. It still beads water well, but on some parts not so well. I test it by running it under moderate water under the sink. In the past it would bead water like crazy, now, not so much. Any suggestions are appreciated.
I found a product specifically made for Polartec softshell but it doesn't come out till Fall 2009. Does anyone know a product similar to PROCARE SHELL+DWR from the http://www.polartec.com/contentmgr/showdetails.php/id/1499 site.?
nikwax softshell proofing will work great. be certain to only spray it on the outside, but keep the fleece inner as is so that it can continue to wick moisture away from your body. after applying the softshell proofing, i tumble dry in a low heat. it helps to evenly coat the outside, and dries the DWR finish in place.

It's a little short, when I reach up it moves up and shows off my stomach. Oh well. Other than that one problem the jacket is great. It can be worn alone or often I wear it with my Agnello top. Perfect combo.
Got this one in green apple in the bc outlet for 100 as well as a day earlier than anticipated. The color is great, the jacket is even better. I haven't worn it in any extreme conditions, but it stops wind, rain will roll right off of it and keep me warm in 30F or above weather. I got the medium (140 lbs athletic, 5'9") and the sleeves are nice and long, the torso is a little short, but I noticed the back is a little longer than the front which is good crack coverage for sitting or bending over. The medium is the perfect size to layer a fleece underneath for when it gets real cold. The cuff material is great because it won't seem to get as dirty as other softshells' cuffs that are the same as the jacket. One last thing-- the goat logos are awesome! Nice and reflective as well as a conversation starter.
Couple questions for the other gear-aholics out there... I have a Shift Welder, is the Rime a lighter weight version or just the same, minus a sweet hood? Also, is the summit sky color the same as the Tahoe for the Welder? Some guy down below returned his because he said it wasn't really blue, more teal I guess? Lastly, I'm a muscular 6' 195 that runs marathons frequently, any advice on the size? I'm going to be running in it during the winters, so I don't want it too baggy, but I definitely need to be able to take it off haha. Thanks for your help!
1) The rime is definitely lighter than the welder. The fleece in the rime is not as full/plush as the welder. Also, the outer material is a bit rougher/tougher than the welder which is smoother. This is not a detriment...the rimes outer surface is similar to many other soft shells out there.
2) I have the rime in summit blue and the picture at the outlet is a pretty good represenation....I would call it 80% blue/20% grey...so its a muted blue. I havent seen the tahoe in person but all the comments seem to make it out to be a teal like color and the summit blue is defineitely not teal like.
3) I have similar build 6/190-200...about 35 waist, 35 sleeve, 42ish chest, run marathons and the large fits well with a light base layer (short sleeve or long sleeve). I might get a midweight on but that would be overkill for most situations. The deep zipper makes it easy to pull on/off.
Overall this is a great layer. I wouldnt worry too much about color if you get a good deal on sale or if you have time/patience at steepandcheap.com (bc owned site). Check out history at http://sac.gearattack.com/search?q=rime
like others said it runs a little small but a large fits me perfect and I am 6foot 170. The large weighed in at 10oz for those counting or backpacking. I would say that mine keeps me warmer then a mid fleece but it is almost windproof and has some water resistant capabilities. very durable.
I work for the forest service in the Pacific Northwest. This is my go-to jacket for nearly every day of work. I wore this jacket to work in the woods every day for 4 months and it doesn't show any signs of wear. The form fitting is ideal for unrestricted range of motion. I have found that it performs awesome in light rain and windy conditions. It is also light and stuffable so it takes up minimal room in my pack when I do decide to take it off, which is very rare in the spring and fall. I don't go into the woods without it.
What is the length like? I am 5'9" 145 lbs, and i cant decide between the small and the medium, will a small be too short for me? if i get the medium will the sleeves be too long?
I have this awesome pullover in carbon. I think the color is slightly lighter in color than the images on the website (as everyone has pointed out). The arms are long (even though I am long-armed), and the size S is tough for me to pull on (I am ultra-skinny at 5'10, 140lbs). Once it's on, it fits wonderfully and kept me warm in moderate temperature conditions (45F with 20mph wind) with just two layers on. Everyone else in street clothing shivered and froze. I stood there and enjoyed the wind.
Great jacket. I used during the winter for running. It kept me warm with some baselayers underneath, and well protected from wind and elements. Being 6 feet and 180 Large fits me pretty well.
I'm 6'1 and 160 lbs, usually between a medium/large. The large fits me perfect, as it has a slim cut. An XL would be my choice if I wanted a baggier fit. Bottom Line, ORDER ONE SIZE UP!!
The small size fits my build perfectly, BUT I am also 140lbs and 5'10. Get the next size up! Haven't used it outdoors yet, but this thing is super light and the warmth it provides (while I'm sitting here) is amazing.
When you read "pullover jacket" you may think that this would make an excellent outer-layer over a thick baselayer or midlayer. If this is what you are planning on doing I would size up. The description does not lie when it uses phrases like "streamlined" and "fitted." Really, this piece works best over a thin baselayer, especially when you are putting off heat. It's thin, breathable, and very water-resistant, and also does pretty well in the wind. But if it really gets cold out, it's soft and comfortable enough to be a good layering piece. It is also lightweight and packs very small. Very nice.
I saw this shirt on Steap and Cheap the other day, and I was wondering if it was ever gonna get back to that sweet deal price? Sorry to sound so frugal.
I've seen it on there quite a lot, keep your eyes peeled. If you sign up for SAC's daily dose email, you'll get some (keyword: some, they don't always list it. thats why its so addicting!) of the deals they put up each day
I have used this jacket a month in Kabul, Afghanistan now. It is perfect for spring weather conditions. I have used it for both walking and running in both rain and sun - it just does it's job. It is the first softshell I have owned that are completely waterprof. Used it in completely downpour and didn't get wet. Highly recommendable!
I bought this pullover for my winter outside runs, and it is awesome!(I live @ 6500') With the right base layer, I have gone out in 0 degree temps and felt great. The arms seem to be a little long, but I think it helps keep heat in when it's really cold. If you want a windproof, waterproof, and breathable outer layer....look no further!
Question:Does anyone know when this pullover will become available in new colors. Would there be new colours coming in Spring and when do they arrive?Just received this jacket a couple of days ago. I am 6'2" and 225 lbs. I got the XL and while it fits pretty snugly it does run a little short in the body length. Nothing except a very thin summer Nike DriFit type shirt will layer underneath. I would purchase again at a discounted price but will go XXL next time so I can layer a heavier base layer or light fleece underneath and get rid off that slight air gap to my skin layer at my waist.
The best thing is to jump on "live chat" and work with those folks. They'll be able to look up if they have any on order, colors/sizes etc., and if they do they'll be able to give you a rough estimate of when they're expected.
I have had the Rime Pullover for almost 4 months. Its perfect for the Front Range winter and spring when layered with a SmartWool top. I spent 4+ hours in snow and rain last Sunday while the outside was soaked, my core was warm and dry.
I agree with the other reviews, the torso is short and the arms are long. Order a size up - the extra sleeve length can double as mittens.
Love this pullover - not really a jacket (you can wear it indoors if you are chilly too). I liked it so much that I bought 2 more of 'em. As others have said, sizes run a little tight so consider that when ordering.
I just ordered this in a hurry from steepandcheap after reading all the great reviews. My question is how will the large fit on a 160 pound 6'2" guy? I usually always wear large and sometimes the sleeves are a little short. So I guess I'm more worried about the length than anything else. Thanks
Hey Josh,Depends on how long your arms are. I'm 6'1" but I have really long arms. The large fit great....arms weren't too short at all but not long enough to bunch up either. These things are the best!Hope that helps.
This is a nice looking shirt (I'd hesitate to call it a jacket), but it's not nearly as warm as any of the other pullover base layers I own (Hind, Brooks, Pearl Izumi). It runs a little snug and short in front. I'm 6'/190, and an XL is good for me, where these days I more often wear a large.
This is an excellent running jacket in temperatures between 30 to 45. I only need a thin baselayer to keep me warm. Most other jackets fits me a bit loose but this one is just right. I don't like the same gray color being used for the front chest pocket because it does not match any of the jacket colors except carbon. I would have bought another one if they offered better color selections.
I actually own this jacket, and am wondering if there are other jackets made out of this same material - with a hood would be great. I see the welder hoody is nice, and probably a good deal, but more than I'm looking to spend (and probably more jacket than I need). I wish I could search this site for jackets made from this same material.Does anyone know of other jackets made from this same material?
Powershield is a rather common material. The welder is a wonderful coat. It comes up on SAC for $140.The Welder is what you need my friend. It layers great over the Rime
I love this peice for almost everything. I like to take it backpackng because it is as light as my lightweight fleece peices but it is wind resistat and water resistant. for the large it is only 10oz. I am 6foot and 170 and the large fits me perfect. not as bulky as a fleece either.
I'm surprised how warm this jacket is. It's great! It's extremely thin and light and great at blocking wind. According to Polartec, the Polartec Power Shield material blocks 98% of wind! Very water resistant as well. When running it under the sink practically all of the water beads off.
Firstly I'm 5'7, 130lbs and ordered a small. The torso fit perfect, the shoulders are a tad wide, but the arms are way to long. The sleeves actually ended to my finger tips. I have normally lengthed arms, so I'm not sure who this jacket is designed for. Other than the the arms, the jacket material and color are excellent. I am disappointed to have to return it.
Just recieved my pull over from steap and cheap. Love the material, nice light weight, form fitting. I oredered the summit sky because, but after recieving it I will have return it because it is more of a teal color. I am 6'1" 180, rather long arms, the large was somewhat difficult to get on but felt great once on. Surprisingly the arms were long enough, which is rare for a large in my case. I think I will return it for the same size different color.
Its a good layering piece, so if you're wearing it you don't need to use as heavy of a jacket. It seems to breathe okay, its easy to launder and the chest pocket is convenient for keys, phones and everything else.
It keeps you pretty warm, but not overly. The zipper is sturdy isn't isn't prone to snagging anything else. The logo just makes you look cool, because you've got the goat near your heart (and it's a great conversation starter) and the smaller logo on the left sleeve is unnoticeable unless you're looking for it. They're also useful if you're in the dark because the logos reflect light well, but be cautious if you're using a camera with flash you're bound to get a bright picture of the logo if you're photographed wearing this.
Overall a great piece of gear, one suggestion would be putting in a elastic drawstring at the bottom to better fit us svelte people with very long arms.
This is a great pullover, very wind resistant and warm for its weight. Nice casual pullover for spring/fall I've gotten lots of compliments. Also great technical piece, I use it mostly for winter hiking but it goes in my pack for just about any outing in all 4 seasons. If your going to be active wear a thin long sleeve base layer underneath b/c it doesn't wick very well nts. I am 220 6ft, wear an XL, and there is enough room for a thick icebreaker underneath. I've also had it for about a year and it is still holding up great.
