Nothing beats Merino wool when it comes to comfort, moisture management, and funk reduction and that's why we made the Backcountry.com Merino Trail Sock. From summer hikes to fall excursions, this lycra-reinforced, ankle-high sock hugs your foot closely and comfortably while you hike. A padded underfoot cushions you along the trail while lycra on the top of the foot, at the ankle, and in the cuff helps the Merino Trail Sock stay put. 3 pair included.
Bottom Line: Toss all your synthetics into the trash.
I purchased both of these socks and have been very satisfied with both of them. There are some differences I wasnt aware of before I bought them, so here it goes. I wear a size 8 hiking boot, so I bought size S/M in each.
The Merinos are quite snug, though not tight. I have no additional bunched up fabric to cause blisters. The overall thickness of the sock remains consistent and comparable to most hiking socks. They do retain some heat and moisture, so if your feet sweat on the trail, theyll stay wet for a while. If dry, they insulate reasonably well.
The Coconas, on the other hand, are loose-fitting. On a few occasions, I have gotten blisters by the toes (where the excess fabric matriculates to). The top of the sock is a very thin, though very durable material, which ventilates air very well. The overall sock feels like a lighter weight material which I would only suggest using in hot environments.
Additionally, while each are ankle high socks, I found the Merinos to be about an inch shorter than the Coconas. If you are wearing a medium hiking boot, the Merinos will come up just over the sides of the boot.
The specs say these are 90% Isowool, which doesn't seem to be wool alone. My impression is that these are mostly synthetic, with some wool. Not what I was expecting. Fit seemes OK given the limited number of sizes, and they seemed thin enough for running socks too me. I liked the color.
SmartWool uses merino wool in their products, in addition to a bit of elastic in many of their socks. SmartWool is a brand, and merino wool is wool that comes from merino sheep. Merino wool is considered to be very high quality in terms of softness, warmth, and breathability.
I bought these socks to cycle once the temps dropped and they work well until about 40 degrees, when I use a sock liner or toe warmers. They are very comfortable and fit well (I have a 13 shoe size).
I had surgery on my foot recently so I have been looking for socks that fit well and add some cushion to my foot. These socks fit the bill. They are very comfortable, warm and cushy. Love these socks and so do my feet.
delivery was excellent...service prompt and courteous...helpful...all that. Now, about the socks: Fit a tad on the tight side (I wear a men's size 10-10-.5 shoe)...appear to be very well made...but...I wanted to test one pair just with a short walk and a wash to see how they came out. Wore them walking briskly for app. 1-2 miles....took them off, turned them inside out and washed them with a few other things of like colors. When I partially dried the socks on low temp setting and removed them to dry completely on top of the dryer...I noticed a hole on one toe right at the toe seam. Not good...but maybe I just happened to get the only one that broke down so quickly.
these socks just don't fit that well. Good idea to make a reasonably priced merino sock but the execution just isn't there. The extra large/large doesn't get the right fit.
l/xl. I wear a women's size 7 shoe and the s/m fit perfectly. If my foot was any larger though, I would have needed the l/xl.I would say get the l/xl size. should be perfect for that foot size. I have a women's 7 1/2 -8 and the S/M fit me good, but a size 10 would not fit them. Always better to go larger than smaller. Nothing worse that socks that don't cover enough of your foot and getting blisters only a couple miles in.
The Backcountry.com Merino Trail Sock is awesome. I don't wear any other socks. My shoe size is 9.5 and the S/M size is perfect. Great height, no sweat or funny smells. Gotta love the baby blue.........
First time buying a Backcountry brand item, doing so because of a coupon. I was startled by how well made and comfortable these socks are. I have Thorlo's, The North Face, Patagonia, and Wigwam light, medium, and heavy socks, and these are just as good as any of them. The lightweight was actually a little heavier that most other brand lightweights, placing it as a light-medium weight. Just awesome for my trailrunning passions. These are the best buys in socks I have ever come across. Could use some different colors as there were only two available, but I have no complaint...all socks end up dirty after a few runs anyway. You will not be disappointed with these at a great value.
For almost the same price as 1 pair of other performance socks, you get 3 of these backcountry socks. They won't last you as long as the others, but the others won't last 3 times as long as these. Do the math. Unless you're just have extremely picky feet, go with the economical choice without a worry.
Seem too heavy and hot for my trail running - even on 30 degree mornings. I'm sure it's a personal preference, but felt like my feet were moving around in my shoe too much from all the sweat trying to move out of the sock. Great sock for comfort wear (perfect match for Birkenstocks) - just not for my style of running.
I've never really got excited by socks, and these are no exception: they're just socks. However, what's better than most other socks is that (1) they are wool, and so are much less smelly; (2) they are wool, and so don't get too wet and heavy; and (3) they seem to be pretty durable. My only criticism is that they're not very stretchy...
Comfy sock for all purpose. Keep the feet cool, and the merino stays sweet smelling after a big workout. Passed the test following a several hour raquetball session. Colors are different, but much respect gets paid for rockin' the goat out the top of the shoe. Dang near perfect sock
I have some of the nastiest, smelliest feet of anyone I've encountered in life, these socks have been stellar on keeping the stank on the down low. Takes a couple uses to get any smell, and a couple more to get a BAD smell; however, for the sake of others change your socks. This socks are also ridiculous comfortable, these are always the first to go after laundry's done. I use them mainly for running and sports, I don't know if they'd be too great backpacking (haven't tried it yet) but they would work for day hikes and such. For the price, they are doubly, triply, quadruply sweet. If you wash them right, they'll last a while. Go for it.
I was gifted a pair of these socks while riding in Fruita and ended up sporting them the entire weekend. Nice breathable material that doesn't leave your feet in contention for first place at the fungus festival. Perfect fit and how can you go wrong with socks that have a goat on the back.
I don't know how many of these other schmucks have had this sock. I think I've had it for about 3-4 months and I already have by first dime sized hole in the toe. I don't think I abuse these at all either. THey also tend to pill quite fiercely. Otherwise they are great at odor control.
I bought these socks when the weather started getting cold, for my daily walk. They are amazingly comfy, as well as warm. I love my feet, and my feet love these socks.
Spent a bunch of time hiking in these socks -- no complaints, no regrets. The cushion on the bottom is nice, as is the thinner material on top, and the cuff is just right to cover the ankle. And you can't argue with the price, or at least the sale price.
I've had these for a few weeks, now. I've worn them for work, trail running and mountain biking. So, far, so good, but I did notice a small hole in one of them. It's matches the SoCal weather this time of year (March/April). I'll have to wait and see if it's too much for our summer temps.
These socks are great for hiking in. They are very comfortable and so far (after 3 washes) seem to hold up well. I only wish they would come in a lighter color! I recommend these socks highly!
Great quality as per the usual with Backcountry.com - wore them for the first time while mtn biking, hiking and fishing at Black Canyon of the Gunnison, CO. Got wet, dried quickly. Best free gift I ever had, aside from my first car.
These socks are very fitting, comfortable, and durable. I wear them to work sometimes under my steel toe boots! I will be purchasing another pair very soon.
The Backcountry.com Merino Trail Sock is very comfortable, but for me it is a little heavy to consider it a high performance sock. Great for hikes and wearing around town, but I'd probably never race in them.
Love these socks! They are comfy to wear while hiking or exercising. The cuff is the right height to prevent some longer grass from slapping at my ankles while running around in grass.
I have been looking for a nice pair of lightly cushioned brown socks for both running and to wear to work with my brown shoes on casual friday's. These are great socks! For running they have just the right amount of cushion, not too much not too little. I wore them in Moab on a trail run and they didn't look dirt stained out of the wash like often happens with lighter socks. They look great with my brown shoes on casual friday as well. I liked so much I bought another 6 pair.
The socks are awesome! The fit perfect and the material is great. They never smell bad and they are extremely comfortable. The only thing I don't like about them is the ugly colors.
I've been fully converted to Merino Wool products & the Backcountry.com Merino Trail Socks are no exception. I received the Glacier/Smoke (a great color-way!) in a size Small & they fit my size 7 feet perfectly. The cuffs don't allow any dirt to get inside of the socks yet aren't so high to keep them from looking dorky. I throw them in the wash & line dry: no worries! (Remember: no fabric softener on your sock or underwear-it will inhibit the material from wicking perspiration.) Plus I like the cushy comfort which is not too hot for summer running.
I used these recently on a backpacking trip through the Southern Utah Desert. Not a single issue. I love these socks. I love the goat logo. It didn't make the sock any more comfortable, but I liked it. Excellent breathability.
Great pair of socks for an excellent price. The sizes are quite small, so when in doubt - go large. I'm a US size 9 and the L/XL fit perfectly. These will keep you cool and dry. Also good for everyday use.
These socks feel fantastic. They have enough cushion to be soft, yet not too much to be too soft. Everytime I hike I use these to cut my foot fatigue. They fit excellent and stay in place during long excursion. Definetly will buy them again.
I just got back from a 6 day backpacking trip in the wind river range. I had these socks on the whole time, and to be honest were the best hiking socks i have ever worn. I hike in The North Face Hedgehog shoe, so the height of the socks were not an issue. Shoe size 8.5 or 9 and I went with a S/M. Buy these, you wont regret it...
This is the first Backcountry.com brand gear that hasn't worked for me. As an employee, I've purchased a good bit. I hike it trail running shoes and this was just too much sock. The height of the "tube" was creeping up towards my knee. Maybe I'm just too short?
These socks are exactly what they claim to be...comfy, durable, high quality merino wool. For 3 pair at this price, they are a steal. Get them! Size wise, I wear a 9.5-10 US Men's and got the S/M. Perfect fit.
I really dig these socks. They are comfortable and warm, with a good breathability. Never had merino everyday socks, and i will be buying more to forgo the cotton.
if these aren't on my feet when I leave, I go NUTS! Great fit...they don't heat up like other merinos, they actually do what merino is suppose to. warm, dry, comfy...
These are great Merino socks. These socks turned me on to the wonders of having a nice pair of socks. Before I just wore 100% cotton. Now all I wear is Merino Wool socks. There are other socks that I like a bit more than these although I would not buy them again because they are too expensive. I would buy these again in a heartbeat without hesitation. I can wear these for a couple days in a row and they don't stretch or get that funky smell that cotton socks normally get.
I have SmartWool and Pearl Izumi biking socks and these compare well with those other brands. They have the perfect size cuffs, and the cool goat logo.
So I wear this sock all the time! I love it and it's super comfy. I love the height of the sock because it never slips below the top of the shoe and so I never get a blister! And who knew, wool could be so cool?
I have loved these socks. Very comfortable. They are holding up well. I have used them for casual wear, cycling and hiking and worked great for all. BC should to make them in a low rise style and a blue and light grey color and then they might be the only socks i wear!
I love these socks. I would have been more happy buying in women's sizes, but I was not let down with the S/M purchase. They are super comfy and have been durable through many washes. I hope they come out in more lengths next.
these socks are phenomenal. I wear about a sice 7 1/2 womens and got the smalls and they fit so perfect! These kept my feet warm and cold all in the same day! I was out digging dirt jumps in the hot utah sun and my feet never got hot! then when the sun went down and the temperature dropped my feet were kept warm! oh merino wool is amazing! Can't wait to get these out trail running, hiking and everything! They are nto as soft as my other merino socks, but they still feel good. Buy a bunch...they rock!
I have a men's size 8.5 foot and the S/M size is a good fit. These socks fit snugly and are super comfortable. They wick moisture well and so far have served well for casual wear and mountain biking. A good way to represent the goat in style and comfort. I am ready to get other colors!
