The Backcountry.com Women's Merino Crew Shirt offers all the softness and natural, performance-enhancing qualities of New Zealand Merino wool, without the flight-to-New-Zealand price. The Merino Crew’s ridiculously-soft 17.5-micron wool pulls infinite duty, from trail running to skiing, working out or just working on your couch potato technique. Flat-lock stitched seams glide smoothly over skin and under layers, so you’ll barely notice you have it on except for the fact that you feel as comfortable as a little lamb.
So I am a huuuuge fan of merino, which might make me a bit partial but I really like this shirt. I actually have 2, one large and one medium. I usually find backcountry.com brand to run a little small but because this shirt is super lightweight it is super stretchy, the large is perfect for me to layer something under it (So it is not exposing my bra for the world to see) and the medium is perfect for a base layer. I am 5'9" 155lbs. Love the bright colours, I have the aqua and tomato, and get lots of compliments on them. The only problem is that it is fairly see-through so beware (Just watch the bra colour), really not a big enough issue for me to not love it. Watch for it on steepandcheap!
My favorite climbing & hiking top. I even run in in, in the dead of summer. No stinky, and dries quickly. I ordered the raspberry and aqua, then came back for tomato. The first two fit better somehow--did they change manufacturers? Anyhow, for the price and the fit, this is a great shirt. Very form-fitting and nice wool is the best thing ever for outdoorsfolk.
I got the aqua, and i can only imagine that the orange and pink are equally 80s neon shades. The ability to wear it multiple times without washing is great for hiking - but when wet it becomes even brighter turquoise, so your sweat patches will be rather blinding. The material is very stretchy, so it can nicely accomodate a larger bust without being too baggy around the waist. Despite the fact that the bust/waist ratio is designed for a woman, it is still long enough in the torso to be able to raise my arms without putting my belly on display (a rare combination). I would love a similar comfortable, quick drying, no-stink shirt for more general travel purposes, but personally I would not wear this combination of color and style for anything except workouts or hiking. With slight modifications in color (at least slightly more subdued!) and style (like a more feminine sleeve and neckline) this shirt would be much more versatile for other types of casual travel without sacrificing its athletic function.
This shirt looks great (raspberry color), and performs great, too. It is a bit thin as others have stated, but 'see-throughness' was not really a problem with the raspberry color.
Because the material is thin, it works well in warm weather, but is is not the most durable. It is worth it if you like the colors, but make sure that you get it on sale as I would not pay full price.
As mentioned, the shirt is a little thin and for the price I'd expect something more. It isn't the softest Merino; in fact, I'd say its pushing rough, but still comfortable with nothing under. Fit is pretty short for me, I'm 5"8', 120, and wear bottoms low so I run into this a lot... but still. The Aqua is a nice color but wish there were more options. Basically: if I could go back, I wouldn't buy it but...now that I have it, its not worth returning and is worn often.
I love wool, I love the color of the shirt (Tomato), love the fit. Love that I can bike 25 miles to work and not stink. However...the shirt is a bit thin. As in everyone else can tell your sport bra's color. As I live in southern California where showing skin is the cool thing to do, it's not that big a deal, although I wouldn't go meet my boyfriend's parents wearing this shirt. Also annoyed because it was a $30 t-shirt; I knew the price when buying it, but expected a really solid shirt out of it.
I absolutely love merino because it's soft, highly breathable, not-stinky, and pretty. Merino dyes really well, and holds color brilliantly. Backcountry's merino is high quality stuff from New Zealand at a more reasonable price than many other brands. I like this particular merino shirt for hiking, running, etc., though I find a bit tight for casual wear, or at least for my personal taste. It's also a bit on the long side. Based off of the sizing chart I bought a Small (though I usually wear medium shirts in other brands). I may have liked the medium better, but I think this shirt will be a bit on the tight side in all sizes.
I bought this shirt for my roomie, who is a size 4, in a size small and it was a little too snug for her. I am hoping I will be able to return it for a medium as we both toally love it! The Aqua is the best color and actually is as bright as the picture shows. For the price and the style this shirt is totally worth it. I would just order a size up.
