Backcountry did as good a job with this shirt for less $$$. Wool is the only undergarmet I wear, and was living on Smartwool's thin wicking T. But this shirt is actually a better fit for me and less $$$. Love it.

Stoked that I got 2 of these

By:
August 14, 2009

These shirts are the bomb: Lightweight, contain the odor, stretchy, athletic fit, and nice goat logo again, hehe.
I got a pair of these about a month ago and use them any time I go climbing indoor or outdoor. They are so light I feel like I am climbing shirtless.
Sizingwise, I am 6'3" and weight 170lbs so athletic built. So I got the medium size and it's perfect. I am so happy I didn't get the large like some people mentioned in the reviews, it would have been way too loose/big for me. I agree it is a bit tight at the armpits, but I don't feel it anymore so I don't know if it is because they stretch a bit or because I just got used to it. But it doesn't bother me at all.

6', 190, 16/35/42-44 athletic - large in the bc ss merino, and its fitted....these t's...at least on me were fitted and a bit long as they have a drop tail...very soft/thin/light weight...happy w purchase...i think at 6'2" and 215, an xl will still be fitted on you and more comfortable than a l. you can also "manage" the size by throwing it in the dryer at med heat for 10 min at a time until you get to the size you want. It might minimally affect some of its properties but not by much...just dont forget about it or else you'll be regifting it to someone much smaller (it will shrink if not watched)

Hot guy shirt

By:
July 20, 2009

This shirt was somewhat of an impulse buy. Wasn't looking for it but the reviews convinced me my husband would like it. He is pretty much obsessed with it now, and frankly so am I. He's 180 lbs., 5'11 with broad shoulders and wears a large, which is what I got him. It's a tighter fit than his usual workout/ outdoors shirts, especially in the sleeves, but consequently, he looks super HOT in it. He wore the shirt on a 4-day backpacking trip in the Rocky Mountains and it was perfect the whole time (not sure how it doesn't stink after that... pretty amazing). Just got it for him in red and haven't seen it yet but glad he'll have more than one to rotate on our next trip. Would love to see more colors (esp. black). Ladies... add to cart!

This shirt changed my life!

By:
September 4, 2009

Not really. But that's the sort of reaction I figure most people would have to this shirt. It is, without a doubt, one of a kind. It's light, but it's not a running type shirt, made out of polyester or something. This is the genuine article. Only thing, tall guys, buy large. I'm 6'4" and a large is a bit short on me. Now buying another one in XL in another color. Sheer awesomeness.

Huh, don't know what kind of dryers those of you who don't shrink them are using. Yes, they shrink a good 5% (unlike Smartwool and Driza-Bone which both seemed to escape my dryer the same size they went in).

No crap, an XL will become an L and and L, well, tighter. I have both sizes and the XL's were too big, but after a drying they're a good T-shirt size for my 5'10" 170lb body. The L's are a decent baselayer fit with a bit of room around the midsection after drying.

Yikes perhaps you've been lucky but I would not put wool in the dryer. At least not the thinner weaves of this style. now if you're trying to shrink it, it's possible to do so (I've done it with an Icebreaker piece that got a bit too big) but micro-manage the process! Short intervals in the dryer. Last thing you want is for the width to stay unchanged but have it completely shrink length wise or some other unfortunate occurance.

Great Lightweight Merino T-shirt

By:
May 11, 2009

For activities in warm weather, this shirt is going to be hard to beat. The shirt is lightweight (lighter than my Icebreaker 190), and breathes and wicks as one would expect merino clothes to do.

The merino wool is soft, and get softer with each washing. The quality is just as nice as the Icebreaker and Smartwool tops that are in my house.

Overall, great buy if you are looking to get a lightweight shirt.

Great shirts. Consider intended purpose and order size accordingly...

By:
July 28, 2009

I ordered 3 colors; all but the Oatmeal. I ordered Larges and XL's. Based on the reviews here I wanted more of a T-shirt fit; not a super tight base layer fit. I am 5'10" and 172.69lbs athletic.

So there is a big difference between the L and XL. The L is tight on my shoulders and pecs (more fitted than tight to be clearer) and has a bit of room through the mid section. Length is perfect on the L and I love how the rear has about 3" more length than the front. If I was using these predominatly as a base layer, I'd go for the M for my build and size. The XL has about an inch in length on the L, but is much roomier, more like a true T-shirt fit. Since I will be using these primarily as mountain bike jerseys, I thought the XL would be the ticket, but they were just too big. In the end I kept the Larges and am very pleased with the fit and function.

As for colors, none of the colors online accurately represent what you get. The Brick appears more orange online but in reality is more red. I really like the color. The blue is definitely more vibrant and lighter. Also much nicer in the real thing. The kelp is not too far off, but again is more green. All of the colors seem way nicer in person than the onine photos.

Someone mentioned a V-neck. Not really. It is a V, but it has a piece sewn in behind the V, so in effect it is a crew, just with an unnecessary, but by no means poor looking, accent at the neck.

Nice weight for summer and Merino really is the bomb. I sweat like a pig and any poly shirt I wear is just plain offensive after 5 minutes in it. With the wool in a 7 day week I can literally commute to work 16 miles round trip on bike M-F, do two full North Shore Fromme rides (an hour and a half to two hours hard) and one Seymour loop (2+ hours hard) all in the same shirt with no washes and it smells no different than day one. I have used Merino as underlayers for skiing, but never for riding until now and forever going forward.

Wicks well and is comfortable. It probably will not wear as well as poly but the trade offs (better temp moderation, moisture management, ability to retain thermal properties when wet and no stink) far outweigh that only negative.

I just received 2 of these shirts, and it's too early to write a review. However, I noticed the seams on the side of the shirt that run from the underside/armpit of the sleeve down to the bottom hem are not the same on each side. One runs down the side much more than the other side, which seems to curve more toward the front of the shirt. In other words, they aren't symmetrical. It doesn't affect the performance of the shirt, it's just asthetics. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yeah, mine are way off too. Canada is the new China...

Anyway, for their intended purpose (baselayer/summer riding shirts) I could care less.

I have not looked at all of mine but the red L I'm wearing as I'm typing this is way, way off. The left seam runs under my left arm while the right seam runs way to the front on the right.

I haven't particularly noticed that but I can also see how it would be probable. When bulk amounts of clothing are made, chances are you'd see more vary from each other than not. If one side of the shirt is cut in an uneven way, you could return/exchange it with Bakcountry and most likely that replacement will be in better condition.

This is a great shirt. I just had the chance to take one on a 12 day trip and it was just as good or better than the icebreaker t-shirt I had taken as well. It is a slim tight fit. I would suggest going up a size if you don't want it to be skin tight. I am 6'3" 210 lbs and went with an XL. Going up a size mad it fit like a normal t-shirt.

This shirt is phenomenal...that's about as close to realistic as I can get. I wore one of these shirts for about 4 days on the CT. I actually slept in the thing a couple of nights too and never once noticed an odor coming from the shirt (coming from me is a different story). The shirt was incredibly lightweight and a perfect base layer. Tight fitting and I agree with some previous posts that the sleeves are well sized as well (not crazy short so that they're in your armpit). Backcountry, you all have nailed it with this one!

BEST T-SHIRT EVER!

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve
Got every color and have not worn any other T-shirts since. Super light, super comfortable, perfect fit! It is very tightly woven, so wind does not go through it like a cotton T. I even wear it mountain biking. Super stretchy, my 3 year old son hung on the collar and it did not rip. You can wear this thing for days at a time, and it won’t smell bad as long as you hang it up at night. Last week was one of those rare occasions when I had to ware a suit and guess what I wore? This killer T-shirt under the suit jacket! Medium fits perfectly for my 165lbs 5'11'' frame.

I'm 5'10" and 175 athletic. Based on all of the reviews I went XL as did not want tight. Anyway, they're too loose and long (the latter may be beneficial to many, however). I take L in everything. They are not too bad but I'm thinking the L would have been perfect.

V Neck/Ringer?

By:
May 12, 2009

First off, great deal on a comfy T-Shirt that will be in my rotation this summer. What I failed to notice is the designer neck action going on here. If you look at the close up picture of the neck you can notice it, but I failed to do so. V-neck/ringer combo I guess. A little confused upon receipt. Is this the new style? Is it functional? Am I cool enough to pull this off? Still not sure about the answers to those questions, but shirt sure is comfy, merino wool for summer rules and, upon recommendation of the gfriend, I will keep and wear with pride (bc pride). Ordered one in blue, green and oatmeal. Cool colors, very slim/athletic fit. Keep moving!

Great shirt for a workout

By:
May 13, 2009

Great shirt! I have merino shirts from Icebreaker, Smartwool, and Ibex and this one is at par with the best. The quality of the construction has been great, even after at least a dozen washings. The fit is snug, so much so that it might look a bit ridiculous as casual wear. I am 5'10" and 150lbs and medium is just about perfect.

I use this shirt for running, biking, or at the gym. For those who have never had a wool shirt it is a very different experience from cotton or microfiber. The shirt is breathable but warm... not uncomfortably so, but you do notice that it retains body heat. The beautiful thing is that as you sweat it doesn't loose that ability, no cold clammy post-run shivers here!

Of course, as with all wool shirts, I have had to pull this shirt out from the gym bag for a third, or fourth use before washing without the slightest hint of odor. On trips I can wash it out in the sink and it's dry in a couple hours. For the price you can't get a better merino shirt!

Comfy but see-through?

By:
May 9, 2009

The shirt is skin-tight and a little see-through?(at least the oatmeal color). But it's merino soft and naturally odor-eating. Sweet for active-wear, but for hairy-large-nippled woodsmen, perhaps not the best for casual use because of the translucence. Maybe you should wax those too...

Ohhh....

By:
July 24, 2009

Well, to start off, I am a dirt poor college student. I ordered this shirt a little while ago, and almost immediately regretted it because of the fairly high price tag. That is until I received it...Shirt fits amazing!!! I am around 5'11" 1/2 and about 162 pounds, bought the medium(170+ pounders definitely go for the large). Pretty tight fitting, especially around my chest. I have medium to big sized arms for my body size and the sleeves fit tight, but not uncomfortable. The thing I like most about the sleeves is they are longer than your average medium, I am extremely happy to avoid the short, uncomfortable sleeves that usually come with tight fitting shirts like this one. Fabric is amazing, breathes well, drys what seems like immediately and is the most comfortable article of clothing I own. I really cannot begin to express how glad I am I bought this shirt. In fact, if they had more colors in stock I would order a couple more! Definitely worth the $50 I spent.Oh and the blue color looks sick! Not nearly as vibrant as shown here on backcountry. Much more attractive in person.

Update - Just wore this on a 16 mile day hike in the zion narrows. Worked flawlessly, dried fast when needed. Complaint; I dislocated my shoulder on the last couple of miles, 6 1/2 hours later I am at the hospital and they have to cut the shirt off to get the shoulder back in. =(.....buying another when I get money.

Best exercise / laying about shirt ever. I wear it working out, playing soccer, or just down to the local coffee shop to grab some breakfast on the weekend. The ladies seem to love the way the shirt fits, as it is supposed to be a base layer and fit fairly close to your body.

It is super light and not itchy like regular wool. Merino is not your grand dad's sweater. And because it is wool you don't have to worry about it getting the funk that synthetics develop.

I have 2 of these now and love them. Super light weight and perfect for hot weather and aerobic activities. These seem to have a fairly athletic cut to them. I'm 5'11" with an slim/average build and the medium is a pretty snug and very comfortable fit. Probably the softest shirt I own - softer than cotton or any icebreaker. Minor cons are that the sleeves are a little long for a short sleeve and "V" design on the collar is a little more fashion than I want in a T-shirt.

July 7, 2009

First, I'll say i wear this shirt all the time. It's great for biking or hiking, and can be used for a few days in a row without smelling. But, I had to get over the see-through properties of such a thin layer of wool, and the fact that the shirt pilled on the first day of wearing it. It still looks pretty decent, and if it didn't pill so much it would probably be a 5 star shirt in my book. It's warm and wicks well, though not as well as a poly shirt of the same weight. I'm 5foot7, 150, and the S is skin tight (and even more see-through), but the M fits a little looser and doesn't show so much skin. Kelp looks good.

The Best Merino Wool Shirt

By: Backcountry.com Employee
August 17, 2009

I bought this shirt and I love it! I now wear it more than any of my other shirts. Unlike other merino shirts this one doesn't itch, at all (it's a higher quality merino than what others use). The performance is awesome, it keeps me dry, keeps me from being smelly. When I first got it I wore it running everyday for over a week before I washed it. Each day when I'd put it on the smells from the previous day were gone.

Some say the sizing is off, I don't really think so. I'm 6'0" and 175 lbs. I wear a large in other brands and a large Backcountry.com Merino Crew fits me nicely. The sizing is a little slimmer than other brands so if you are in between sizes I'd go with the larger size.

Since it is merino it take a little longer to dry than synthetic shirts, but the fact that it feels better when on and doesn't hold odors more than makes up for that.

So far after about 3 months of use and close to a dozen washes, there are no signs of wear. I will be replacing all my synthetic shirts with these merino shirts. They really are the best merino shirts you can get.

I have three of these now, they are absolutely amazing...I use them for everything from running and biking to lounging around the house. The fit is true, I am 6' 190 and the Large is quite comfortable. The sleeves are a little longer than most short sleeve shirts, however, it doesn't detract in anyway. I love the feel and how breathable they are. Kelp is pretty much my new favorite color. It's a little greener than the picture above, more of an olive than the tan that my computer screen makes it out to be. Don't think twice, grab one of each color!

I bought this shirt in oatmeal, kelp, and ocean blue so I'll comment a little on the color. The kelp is a little more green and less yellow than shown in the pictures (better). Oatmeal is pretty much spot on...maybe a little less creamy and just a tad more whitish-grayish hue. Ocean blue is less sharp a blue than shown in the pictures--real thing is more of a pastel blue, which I also prefer. One other note: the oatmeal is a little bit see-through. It's not so much a problem with kelp and ocean blue.

Sizing: I'm tall and lanky at 5'11'' and 130lbs. The small size ended up fitting remarkably well, with the body length and sleeve length being just right (sleeve length is a little longer than normal, but I like it that way). It's an athletic fit, and with my body type on a small size, the chest-to-armpit area feels quite fitted, and the rest of the sleeve and especially lower body are looser. It's a good fit overall, but because of the tight fit around the armpits, the cloth around that area can bunch up a little with activity. This does not affect comfort or performance, but if wearing this shirt alone, I find myself pulling the shirt down and out to straighten out the bunching.

As mentioned in Q&A, this is a lightweight merino wool shirt. I would have preferred it a little thicker for the amount it costs, and this is the reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars. I wouldn't pay retail for this shirt, but on SAC it's not a bad deal. Still would have liked more wool for the buck, though.

Merino Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve

By:
June 11, 2009

Just started trail running and bought the Merino Crew (Ocean) based on the reviews and the price. I ran in it every other day for 3 weeks. I washed it with a little softener each time and I swear that it continued to get softer with every wash. I got nervous that I was going to wear it out so I bought another in Brick. Perfect fit and wicks the sweat away and there is no wet wool smell. I love it and will buy a couple more before the Summer is over. Last note, shipping and customer service have met and exceeded most all other online clothing / gear suppliers from which I have ordered.

Perfect summer T

By:

This is a great backpacking T. Everyone knows about merino wool already, so I want to point out the construction of the shirt. The seams are bomber. No simple single/double stitch here. That being said- these shirts are thin-- if you were using them for casual tee shirts, they might be a little too thin unless you were going for that vintage aged see through look. Perfect for summer hiking/ camping. Much more durable then the thinness of shirt would suggest, they are very well made.

The Merino Crew Shirt is super rad. This piece is very comfy, no itching, quick drying, great quality, and has a lower price tag than other similar merino wool tops. I bought a MED and LRG and I'm 5'11" 155 lbs. The large fits well, the MED was way tight (especially in the arms and I don't have big guns), and I usually wear a MED for this type of shirt.

By far, the most comfortable and most worn shirt I own. Runs a little small for my shoulders. So I sized up to an xl. You must own this shirt. Worth every penny.

got this for my husband and he loves it. I like the looks better than those synthetic shirts and it has a bit longer cut which is nice.

Super soft, Super Comfy Superb product from BC.com

I own several wool tops and I would say that this is honestly the most versatile. Its comparable to a Patagonia Wool 2 Crew, and breathes immensly. With just it underneath, I wear my Welder hoody in temps down to the low 40s and am still comfy. The natural color works GREAT as an undershirt for formal wear. I gotta get 2 more of these.

this 17.5 micron merino wool, is softer than a cotton tshirt. it wicks well, breathes well, and fits great. But what is amazing about this shirt is i can wear for DAYS, and it does not smell, or pick up odors. i can pull it out of the dirty laundry, and wear it again!. natural odor control, not using some silver AG ion, or heavy metals, or chemicals, this is all naturalle.

Warm weather only...

I bought these for a trip to South America and was bit disappointed in the weight, they're thin! Should've read the reviews here first before taking the plunge.

Fit was accurate, and the fabric was comfortable. I'm sure they'd rock in the heat, but not anywhere else...

Not for me

By:

I hate wool, no matter how thin. It is not so much a knock on the shirt which is "nice" as it is on those of us who believe that this will be as soft as cotton just because it is "thin". If you are like me and DON'T like wool, you will not like this either
