Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Forget your fears about itchy wool—the Backcountry.com Women's Merino Long-Sleeve Crew Shirt is a whole different beast. We made this base layer with super fine 18-micron New Zealand Merino—which simply means that this shirt is so comfortable, you may never take it off. The Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt ensures comfortable, dry days whether you're out for a mid-January dawn patrol or an autumn ride down the single track. Merino transfers moisture while your sweat is in its primary vapor form, so unlike most synthetic fabrics the Merino Crew Shirt begins to pull moisture away from your body before your shirt becomes saturated. And since wet usually means cold in the backcountry, warm Merino is the way to go. With its flattering women's-specific fit and rub-reducing raglan sleeves, the Merino Crew Shirt offers both outdoor function and casual comfort. A reflective logo hit on the Merino Crew's front neckline ensures a little more safety during your evening runs, and the thumbholes at the cuffs take the bunch out of layering.

Bottom Line: Don the Backcountry.com Women's Long-Sleeve Merino Crew Shirt and become a Merino believer, or a day dream believer—either way, we're stoked for you.

4.5 stars if I could

I am really loving this shirt, despite the fact that a white bra underneath would definitely show up a little under the Glacier/Smoke color (as you can see in the picture I've already posted on here), but not all that much...I mean, it's not quite enough to make it uncomfortably see-through, but I tend to wear a tank top or something under it if I'm heading out to run errands. Compared to the Rose/Smoke Backcountry Merino Zip Tee, it definitely seems like a thinner material, although both shirts say they are midweight.

As a baselayer, it's practically perfect. The fit is great, you can wash it normally and can even put it in the drier (which doesn't shrink it at all!). It doesn't hold smell and it's fairly thing but keeps me so, so perfectly warm...I never overheat in this shirt.

My only real complaint is that the thumb holes are slightly too small. The thumb hole size is perfect on the Backcountry Merino Zip Tee so I'm not really sure what happened here with this one.

Itchy Itchy Itchy

By:

I hate to go against the grain and be the lone reviewer to call this itchy. But it drove me crazy! I couldn't wear it for even 5 minutes. Maybe I'm a big a pansy and have super sensitive skin but I don't think merino wool is for me. Luckily it made a great Christmas present for someone else and they loved it!

What color is the guacamole? In the picture it looks yellow, but guacamole would suggest some sort of a green variation.

The guacamole is actually a greenish-yellow color, so yeah, it's more green than the picture would suggest. I ordered it because it was such a great deal on merino, but was hesitant about the color given how it looks in the picture. In person, I could not be more happy about the color! I love it!

A little thin, but great

By:
January 22, 2010

I love this shirt. It seems a little bit thin, but I actually stay warm in it. The thing that' so great about it is the fit. It has a long torso and dips lower in the back so you're lower back doesn't peak out to say hello if you bend down to grab something. The arm length is long and perfect and it's super comfortable. Definitely a great find!

Got the quarter zip last year, and wasn't disappointed with the new offerring. Got the guac/smoke and the color is great. Fit is great - nice length in the body and sleeves.
5'7" 130lbs Got the small, fits great

Yeah, have 2 colors now

By:

Great shirt. Heavy enough to be good under a cardigan sweater, but not bulky. Sleeves are a good length, thumb holes (that I don't frequently use) are comfy and in the right place. The Guacamole color is a yellow green as expected, the blue is a nice shade compatible with many other blues, not too bright. I could have a whole collection of these.

Same Great performance as the 1/4 Zip

By:
November 23, 2009

Bought this shirt in the Glacier/Smoke Small for my wife and it's functioning just as well (excellently!) as the 1/4 zip version that she has in Rose/Smoke. She tried this shirt on with a skin tone bra and it didn't show like the white bra in the picture. Excellent shirt fitted as a baselayer or a very athletic-cut single layer. My wife is a Small in Icebreaker stuff, XS in less athletic cuts of Columbia or REI.

Nice baselayer

By:
January 15, 2010

Nice thin baselayer. The merino is warm without being scratchy. I wear it under a thicker baselayer when really cold, or as only baselayer under sweater when not so bad. Fits true to size.

Best ever.

By:

My favorite base layer - fits PERFECTLY. I got the guacamole color and it's more of a pretty lime color. It's cut really well, is warm, absorbs moisture, doesn't smell, and has thumbholes! I don't know what else you need. Best shirt ever. I'm 5'5" and 135 lbs and the medium fits perfectly.

Coldweatherfun

I got this top for winter running, snowboarding, xc skiing, and the like. I really like it. It's warm, I love the fit, and I am a huge fan of the thumbholes. I've decided to buy things without such great features ONLY in emergenices. I am very pleased with this top, and I think it works very well. Yes, I am recomending this shirt!

Okay shirt-- need better colors.

By:
January 14, 2010

I think the shirt gets the job done-- though I'm not super thrilled with it.

Bad things first:
The fit is a little funny-- snug in the torso and at the wrists, but strangely very baggy around the upper arms.

I'd really prefer darker colors-- say black or dark blue or brown.

Besides those-- mostly superficial-- issues, the shirt is nice. I'd say it's true to size (5'8 120lbs-- an XS works). I like how long the torso is and the merino fabric does a great job of moderating my body temperature. It's a great underlayer for bouldering in the chilly winter weather or for just lounging around the house.

Overall, I'm not unhappy with the purchase-- though I don't know that I'd buy one again.

Review Title

By:
January 11, 2010

I got this shirt because I wanted a shirt with thumbholes. The fit is a little strange: snug in the body and baggy in the sleeves. The sleeves aren't quite long enough/thumbholes not big enough to use the thumbholes comfortably for long periods of time, but on the plus side, the sleeves definitely go past the wrists. Nice shirt though, soft and warm. I'm 5-11, 150, got L.

Am going to get another!

By:
November 27, 2009

Adore this top. It fits perfectly (I am 5'3" and 118#s), very snugly. It's an awesome base layer with a slight itchiness that I don't even notice any more. The sleeves are very long which would be good if the thumb hole was bigger. I have teeny hands and the thumb hole cuts my thumb off!

Great affortable wool

By:
September 16, 2009

This is the second one Ive bought. last year I bought the one with a zipper. I wore it everyday while working outside on a ski hill. It NEVER stank (unlike capaline!)
I bought a second so I could switch It up a bit. Wash with your regular laundry, and your good to go! These are the only two tops i'm bringing for 21 days down the Colorado river.

Still great, but personally loved last year's version a lot better

By: Backcountry.com Employee
April 10, 2009

Still a solid choice, but last year's version was a lot better. They are both long which is great for a base layer top so it is less likely to ride up, but this newer one is tighter in the hip/butt area which is not as functional for most women (hello people, women have hips!) so it tends to ride up a little anyway, despite the length. I have to try and stretch this one out a little before wearing it unlike the one I purchased last year which is still a perfect fit.

Last year's color choices were a lot better too, loved the charcoal one especially and do not like having such light colors in my base layers (this year's). It would have been nice to have one darker color option available. And normally I would be all over a green option, but that "guacamole" looks like vomit. Sorry guys!

To end on a high note, i still love the material and the weave they use. A nice flat smooth finish to this merino that is more like a jersey knit (but not as stretchy as cotton jersey) and good flat lock seems. And performance of the merino during activity is stellar.

this is a go-to shirt for me when I want something I can layer over a short sleeve and then tie around my waist when I heat up. I would size up if you want to layer it over things, or buy your regular size if you are wearing it alone. It is definitely a slimmer fit.
