Forget your fears about itchy wool—the Backcountry.com Men's Merino Long-Sleeve Crew Shirt is a whole different beast. We made this base layer with super fine 18-micron New Zealand Merino—which simply means that this shirt is so comfortable, you may never take it off. The Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt ensures comfortable, dry days whether you're out for a mid-January dawn patrol or an autumn ride down the single track. Merino transfers moisture while your sweat is in its primary vapor form, so unlike most synthetic fabrics the Merino Crew Shirt begins to pull moisture away from your body before your shirt becomes saturated. And since wet usually means cold in the backcountry, warm Merino is the way to go. The athletically-fitted Merino Crew Shirt feels great against the skin so you can wear it during your ride and then to the pub, and your post-ride car mates will thank the powers that be for Merino's natural odor-shunning properties. A reflective logo hit on the Merino Crew's front neckline ensures a little more safety during your evening runs, and the thumbholes at the cuffs take the bunch out of layering.
Bottom Line: The Backcountry.com Merino Long-Sleeve Crew Shirt—the Goat has embraced the sheep. Lucky you.
Got it. Love it. Wear this thing every chance I have. Has served as my baselayer while boarding in a thrashing winter storm, on bluebird days, and hiking through various temps. This shirt is a great starting point for any weather below 80F. Breathes great and its snug fit makes layering easy. Just be prepared to wait as your hiking party continuously stops to strip or add layers, while you relax and chill in this.
There are certain qualities about this shirt that are better than the patagonia wool 2. 1 it is nice to have the thumb holes for dawning other articles of clothing 2 it seems more durable and a little thicker 3 it pills less. I also like the 3 tone colors.
This shirt wicks well, look great (even after spending a few days stuffed in my pack, and is true to size. I really like the thumb holes in the sleeves to protect the back of my hands from the UV rays.
I just got two of these shirts and was able to wear one of them recently on a hot 97 degree AZ day. The shirt is very comfortable, wicks well and helped to keep me cool in spite of the heat. It fits true to size and I really appreciate the thumb holes for protecting the back of my hands. These are great shirts!
check out the same merino crew, but in new colors for 2009. bcc0181http://www.backcountry.com/store/BCC0181/Backcountry-Merino-Crew-Shirt-Long-Sleeve-Mens.html
This shirt is great! Wore it two days in a row (don't judge) just because it was so comfortable. It wasn't too cool out so just pulled up the sleeves. Can't wait to use the thumbholes though. Very comfortable shirt and runs true to size in my opinion.
What is the weight of this shirt, in comparison to the Icebreaker shirts, which give a weight of 150, 200, etc? If anyone knows the actual weight in ounces, that would be helpful too.
I wore this shirt for a weeklong trip in the BWCA in temps from the mid 40s to upper 70s and at the end of the week it still smelled as fresh as at the beginning. I couldn't say as much about the Patagonia Capilene that I had usually worn. The Capilene now stays in the closet and this shirt is worn nonstop.
This is an excellent shirt for use as a base layer for snowboarding. The thumb loops make it so convenient putting on a jacket or underneath another layer of clothing. I thought wool would be really scratchy up next to my skin, but this was really soft. It kept me dry the entire time, even though I felt myself sweating. If I get another discount code, I'd buy another one!
"Backcountry's" merino long-sleeve undergarment is comfortable, stylish and functional in everyway!I particularly like the thumb holes at the wrist, that help elimiate drafts where gloves meet jacket,by keeping the sleeve from riding-up!
These shirts are brilliant! Great price and a great product. Keeps you cool when warm and warm when it's cool. The best thing about wool is you don't get a chill when you're standing around after getting a sweat up, and it doesn't smell either! Good on you for making it affordable.
excellent, excellent shirt. performed great on a 3 day hike in patagonia and did equally well while hiking in Peru. Kept me warm, but not too warm, and dry. It didn't even stink when I was done (like everything else I was wearing). Wish the price was a little lower. Also, this shirt did not itch at all and I usually have a real bad time with wool.
This is really warm for how lightweight it is. It has a very good fit. This is better than all the other base layers I have and I would get another one if I had the money!
I've only had this a few weeks but my initial impressions are extremely positive. I ran Jupiter Peak along the Wasatch the other evening and it worked well across a variety of conditions. We started out in 80 degree temps with sun and this thing was very breathable and I didn't overheat. By the end of the run/hike it was dusk with temps around the mid 60's. The shirt had dried out nicely on the decent and kept me warm especially on the bike ride from the trailhead to my car. I dig it.
Merino Wool is the only wool I can wear. The problem is it's so damn expensive. Once I found out backcountry had an affordable Merino line I became hooked. Everything you've heard about merino is true, especially the claims that merino is odor-free. These shirts are stylish too. I wore mine on a date after biking 16 miles in it. The fabric is very durable as well.
This site really hit the nail on the head with their Merino line. For those who love base layers, long-sleeve T's, being warm, being stylish, feel'n good, and most importantly for those of you who itch like mad when wearing wool like I do, this is one of this site's many options for you. Wear it in the yurt, under your bike jersey, downtown, or to bed. Amazingly priced for Merino! Hopefully this site will keep expanding their Merino line.
I bought this shirt for my dad and he loves it. It is soft and comfortable and looks good. He is 6' and 150lbs and the medium fit well. The thumb holes are great for cold weather football.
