If you're tired of tasting last night's concoction when drinking from your plastic bottle, leave aftertaste and clichéd design behind for the stainless steel Backcountry.com 40oz Goat Klean Kanteen. This lightweight, toxin-free, non-funky, and dishwasher safe water bottle leaves your old plastic or Lexan rig wanting. The Goat Kleen Kanteen comes though in a pinch as a container for boiling water, and the super-durable stainless steel exterior is sticker-friendly. As a green alternative to disposable water bottles, this sleek vessel carries the Goat logo with pride.
Bottom Line: The Backcountry.com Goat Klean Kanteen leaves polymer water bottles as a thing of the past.
If you buy this bottle, just know the cap will break into 2 pieces. 1 will be the metal, screw-in plug that will become your functioning cap. It will have a razor-sharp edge on the top...enjoy that!
Backcountry acknowledges the issue but does not carry the plastic 1-piece top that KK makes. Once you replace the cap, with that one strait from KK, the bottle will last forever and taste great!
I first got in contact with this bottle in the spring of 06 and I have never looked back since. I have always been picky with drinking vessels. I Persisted with glass as long as I could but they are just to heavy and breakable. Never liked any kind of plastic due to its harboring of bacteria and the oil and chemicals that is used to manufacture it, nor with aluminum bottles that reacts to many liquids that you put into them. With the Klean Kanteen you get the best of everything. Environmental friendly to produce, does not harbor any bacteria, does not leach any toxins, and last pretty much forever. This all means that since it lasts and does not get foul smelling, broken etc, you don't have to throw it out (recycle), just to buy yet another plastic container. This is another major concern for most of us outdoor people, the environment. I have cooked soups and other hot liquids in this bottle right on the camping stove, no problem. After countless outings, scratches and dents this bottle still tastes as when it was brand new.
I received my Backcountry.com Goat Klean Kanteen and started using it right away! I love the fact it is not plastic or aluminum! I can't stand the taste of plastic in my drinking water. With this kanteen, no problem, just clean water! Very good product.
Correct, the opening of the Kleen Kanteen bottles is 1.75" They do manufacture a sport cap, which will help prevent spills, but unfortunately backcountry does not carry it.
I like the bottle. After holding an acai flavored emergen-C, the water tasted normal after one rinsing. Oh yeah, It holds a forty of High Life like no other bottle!(just don't keep it capped for too long!)
The most ecological water bottle on the planet! More durable than plastic, no leeching of dangerous chemicals, lightweight, stylish, eco-friendly, and just plain awesome. After 2 years of use, this bottle performs like the first day. Give up the petroleum-based plastics and go green with Klean Kantean!
Yes. They are identical. I have two 27oz bottles (one with plastic ring cap and one with sports top cap) and one 40oz bottle (with ring cap) and I interchange them regularly with no issues.
The openings are the same size, but the threading isn't the same as a Nalgene so the filter won't work the same way. On a Nalgene, the lid goes over the top of the bottle whereas on a KK, the lid threads down inside.
The cap, not so much. Wish I would have paid more attention to the other folks with cap problems. After only about a dozen uses, the plastic part of the cap detached from the steel screw part. So frustrating. Just like everyone else, it popped back in, but now it pops off every time I try to screw it in.
i was never going to write a review on this doodad, until it was taken from me just the other day. now i miss it, and i miss it bad. it's survived 9 months of brutal messengering, falling, throwing it across cement floors and concrete, and still it only had tiny dents in it. when you'd expand too rapidly from my hot liquids going outside int negative 11 degree weather for eight hours, i would just push your button back in. you were there for me, and now you're gone. i will buy a new one, rub the logos off again, and smash the new one around twice as hard for you.
I have been using mine for years now. They withstand some gnarly beatings! I have dropped mine off cliffs and they dent but I haven't had one break on me yet. I highly recommend drinking out of a Klean Kantene over other bottles you find like Nalgene (they are generally made with a polycarbonate which is a type of plastic that slowly leaches and could potentially be cancer causing). I have put soo many different liquids in mine and they do not taste after a quick rinse which is a huge upgrade from the aforementioned polycarbonate bottles. What other bottle can you toss on a camp stove and cook your soup in? By purchasing this bottle you are supporting a really good company. They are all eco friendly and there products are 100% recyclable!
I had forgotten what water tasted like. With this bottle, thats all you taste - clean, fresh water. Very durable designe. It will get some dings and dents, but that adds to its character. I never carried my nalgene bottles, unless I was camping or hiking, but with this one I carry it with me every day. I am soon to buy more of these great bottles. Way to go KK!!!!
I picked up one of these figuring it was worth the 40 bucks to possibly not get the cancers. Turns out I like this better than previous bottles I've owned. Not sure about other reviewers but I've abused it fairly harshly and the cap is still in tact and it doesn't have any major dents, its 18/8 stainless. I fill it with hot water and keep it in my bag when winter camping. Works great. It also provides nice cool relief against the forehead after a night of drinking. No after tastes at all either. I left some tea in it in my car by accident for 2 weeks and it didn't get super janky. Just a hot water rinse and it was good to go.
I figure this thing will last at least a decade or two.
I have about 5 of these bottles now and have completely replaced my Nalgene (and similar plastics) for all of my hiking and backpacking needs.
The Klean Kanteen bottles are all stainless steel which provides a lightweight but durable bottle that yields great tasting water all the time.
Note: these are NOT thermos bottles so cold water won't stay cold (although I have no trouble loading ice into the opening of these bottles) and I would HIGHLY recommend that you NOT put hot liquids inside as you'll easily burn yourself with the bottle.
The caps are all interchangeable as ever KK bottle has the same opening dimensions.
This bottle is great. I often fill my 'water' bottles with other beverages (carbonated, or coffee--don't ask). With my Nalgenes, even a good washing couldn't remove the taste/smell, and carbonated beverages would leak out the top. That, and I do have health concerns about putting any beverage (especially hot ones) into a plastic container. The Klean Canteen doesn't retain smells/tastes and doesn't leak with carbonated beverages. It is 40 oz (larger than a Nalgene) yet its somewhat narrower diameter makes it easier to get in and out of bottle pockets. It's mouth is big enough that putting ice cubes in is no problem. What's not to like?
304 will rust a lot more quickly than most stainless steels, but if you use it once a month and wipe it / wash it you'll never see accumulation. Sometimes low chromium steel dust or imperfections rust but they can easily be polished out or just wiped with a brillo pad.
I would purchase this again. I bought 4 of them for 15.50 each and the wife and I love them. I use one everyday and havent had a lick of trouble. I've been somewhat cautious with handling the kanteen by the top as someone noted previous, it may come off, as of yet all is well here. Ive also had numerous comments on them, "where did you get that? Backcountry, where else". Life is better with a klean kanteen!
Hippie, don't listen to Shane. This bottle does NOT have a plastic coating inside. You can absolutely boil water in it. If the stickers are on top and you're boiling on a small stove and not in a fire the stickers should be fine.
Shane, don't answer questions when you don't actually know the answer, all it does is confuse people. The description even says its good for boiling water!
Everything's great except the first time I screwed on the cap, the plastic part detached. Was I just honking down too hard: don't think so, looking at the design, I would never trust these things to stay together.

My husband saw these online (for less than $16) and we bought 3 right away -- wow, the water tastes even better at that price. Seriously, they are durable, esp for our 14 y/o son who is rough with just about all of his things. I like the huge amt of liquids it holds. Overall, have nothing bad to say about these bottles!
I got these as gifts for all the guys in my wedding, and of course had to get myself one too. So far it has been great. Water always tastes good even if it has been in there awhile. Feels pretty durable, looks great. Water tastes better than a nalgene and looks cooler than a sigg.
So far, so good. It keeps the beverage of choice nice and cool. Simple warm water rinse out cleans it out well so there is no after taste. I had read a couple of reviews where people had the top break. So far I haven't had that problem. I have had the bottle hanging on my commuter bag by a caribiner, full, and it has been quite sturdy.
The Klean Kanteen is 18/8 stainlesss (austenitic) right? I checked mine with a neodymium magnet and it strongly stuck. I thought that the nickel content of the stainless is supposed to make the the metal non-magnetic. Any thoughts?
Even when dealing with "stainless" steels, the nickel content you're going to encounter is generally no higher than 15-20%, with other elements like chrome, cobalt, magnesium, et cetera making up the rest of the trace content. In any case, you'll still be looking at no less than 70% ferrous material in a "stainless" steel. (I put stainless in quotations simply because most stainless steels are simply corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof. In practical terms for most people corrosion won't be an issue, but one should probably think twice before relying on these lasting years in salt water situations). Being at least 70% ferrous, magnets will be attracted. The only possible exception I can think of is H1 steel.
Cold working 18/8 can form subtle ferromagnetic characteristics. I'm guessing that Klean Kanteens are made from a blank using several dies, which could explain the magnetism. Just a theory.
Love the bottle. Mouth opening is about the same size as a 32oz. Gatorade bottle opening. About the same width in your hands as the Gatorade. As the rest of the reviewers said, this bottle adds no taste to the water. In fact, after tasting my water out of this bottle, i realized i needed to filter my water--i couldn't taste the impurities in my nalgene :)
Great Bottle, Got this after I lost my old Nalegne bottle and am happy I went with this. I can go from mixed drinks back to water eaily with out any after taste.
I am a hiking guide at the Grand Canyon and put gear through the wringer. Consistently I've been pleased with all my Backcountry.com purchases (which are many), but this time I'm gonna have to be a bit negative. The bottle itself is great, just a problem with the lid. The black top popped of ving the actual "male"aspect of the screw in stopper still in the bottle. It does pop back into place but now that it's happened once it is a reoccuring problem.
At just under $16 this is a great price. This bottle comes with the stainless cap, which I don't think is included with any of their newer bottles.
A couple of people mentioned that their caps came apart, but I've had a 27 oz for almost a year, use it pretty heavily on a daily basis and I havn't had any problems. If you're concerned about the cap, get one of the newer plastic ones since they are one piece of molded plastic and can't come apart.
These bottles do dent pretty easily, but most of my dents have been easily removed with a hammer and a long phillips screwdriver (wrapped in a towel or tape so it doesn't damage the steel).
Love the clean stainless container and the stainless inside the lid! No plastic touching my drink! Can't stand the dufus who slapped on two stickers, the "Made in China" on the inside of the lid and a great big one on the bottom of the container. I got the sticky off on the lid with peanut butter, but the one on the bottom took too long and I gave up. Two months later it still picks up papers and lots of cat fur--great for snagging things you can't quite reach or de-furring the cat!
The other problem is that this container keeps disappearing--my wife likes it as much as I do! Buy two!
You're right, this bottle is only a single walled stainless steel bottle...so don't expect there to be all that much insulation for keeping hot drinks hot, or cold drinks cold.It does a good job for being single-walled.
Well, I was happy at first about the nice stainless bottle. However, on my first outing with these, the plastic part on the cap popped off while I was holding the bottle through the loop. The bottle dropped on the ground and now has a big dent on the side. These are supposed to be made for hanging the bottle by a carabiner, but after looking closer at all 4 bottles I purchased, they are not strong enough to hold a full bottle by the loop. Considering the high price of these bottles, they should be built better.
i got this for $15 so it was a really good deal! i didn't pat attention to the fact that it is 40oz! oops, it is good though, still taste like metal, but kept my water cool while latched to the back of my pack in the hot summer heat. it is really heavy, i thought. it doesn't leak!
This bottle is rad. I agree with other reviews that it does not have a funny taste after a certain amount of use. I can put any liquid in it and clean it out just fine with no residual taste. The Backcountry logo on it is nice but not in your face. The opening is big but not huge like a Nalgene where you spill it all over yourself. My only complaint is a nails-on-a-blackboard like noise when you are unscrewing it. But hey, I can deal.
Klean Kanteen rocks, even better w/ the goat logo. No BPA, use less waste, no funky odors. Not all of the stainless bottles can claim to have no toxins, but Klean Kanteens have been proven safe.
This product is the best I have found. I love that I can put tea and sweet sports drinks in it, rinse it out and drink water with no after taste the very next use! On top of that it has environmentally friendly manufacturing and there is no risk of harsh chemicals leaching into my beverages hot or cold! It also makes a GREAT hot water bottle on those cold winter camping trips.
I had water in this bottle for about a week in my car in decently warm temperatures, and it didn't develop any kind of weird taste like a Nalgene does. My only complaint is that I dropped it when it was full, and it dented quite easily. Hasn't impacted its utility though. Definitely worth the extra money
I've been using this thing hard...every day for a month. Only one dent, and all stickers still stuck to it. It rules! No weird aftertaste with water, and it doesn't hold the taste of any other beverages. Tried tea, coffee, cytomax, and water. All taste great. There is no insulating value...but who needs that, the bottle would weigh twice as much. Good size too! 40oz. The only annoying thing is you sometimes get a small bit of liquid that squirts out when opening. You can deal with that.
I've had other klean kanteens and didnt' really like the way the screw top fitted. Klean Kanteen seems to have improved the screw top for this bottle. Nice big size so you don't have to keep refilling. Love the goat logo!
After a few cleanings, this Klean Kanteen bottle serves up beverages w/out any weird after taste (at first I swore I tasted metal, but not any more). Regardless what you put in there - coffee, tea, gatorade, etc., just clean it out and you're good to go. It doesn't insulate very well, so don't expect beverages to stay cool. However, it's super tough and being that it's recyclable, it's environmentally friendly too. Everyone should have one of these in their gear closet.
