Kinda strange fit, but nice none-the -less

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
June 10, 2009

Just wore this shirt for the first time on Rainier and the material is fantastic. I had an issue with the fit though, it seems to pull across the chest on the seems at the shoulders, so I wasn't totally stoked on how it sat on my frame. but when a tourist at the White River Campground told me she liked my shirt I thought that was worth at least a mention.

Sizing Issues

By:
April 23, 2009

I am reluctant to rate this shirt. I am giving customer service five stars, and the shirt two stars, for a total of three...
I am a consistent medium in many product lines - 5' 8" and 150 pounds. The medium in this shirt was tight across my back and cut me under the armpits. In chatting with Backcountry customer service, we decided to give another color in medium a try, as well as a large. Nice intervention on the part of The Goat. I discovered that the medium in another color fits the same; good consistency, but not right for me. The large was comfortable against my back, but it still cut me in the armpits. Not good. Let me note here that I am not looking for a roomy fit - I intend to run in this piece. I am good with the compression fit of Patagonia's Biostretch. But I am not satisfied with a shirt that pinches my pits and overall feels like the geometry needs some tweaking in the lab. The material and finish of the shirt looks good, and I applaud the reflective logos for safety. I cannot comment on the fabric under active, sweaty conditions. It may be your perfect trail shirt, but it didn't work out for me, unfortunately.

Want to get one of these shirts. I'm 175 5'11" with a little bit wider of a chest but smaller waist. Would you recommend a medium or a large?

I'd go with the large for comfort and the medium if you want a more performance next to skin fit.

Medium fit, 5' 11" - 160 lbs

By:

Fits a little snug, longer arms, but not as wonky on me as described by some of the other reviews. Was a little scratchy on the man nips after a getting wet.

I thought this shirt was pretty heavy. It also felt strange, it felt like the fit was wonky. I returned it and Backcountry was easy to deal with.

Great Shirt, tight in the chest/shoulders

By:
September 27, 2009

This shirt is great, and I really enjoy wearing them when hiking or running, even in late spring touring. They breathe really well, and don't absorb odor. This shirt is an excellent value. The only issue i have with this shirt is that you have to have a fairly skinny build for it to fit you well. I have a more muscular build and a relatively broad shoulders, and the shirt feels kind of tight across the chest, and in the armpits. Not so much a problem, more of just something you notice.Other than that though, I really like the shirt.

How long will this Cocona Carbon stink blaster stay with the shirt? Is it something that will wash out after the first few sessions, or will it keep fighting the funk for the life of the shirt?

Nice shirt, interesting fit

By:
August 17, 2009

This is a comfortable shirt, that breathes and wicks well. However, like others have noted, the fit is a litte strange. I followed the recommendations of others and sized up. Most of the shirt fits fine, but it is tight on the top of the shoulders. This tightness is especially noticable when lifting my arms up to the horizontal position (to say nothing about lifting them over my head). I would definitely recommend sizing up, but even then, if you have broad shoulders expect some tightness.

Cocona Materials is a carbon infused polyester. if you can see the inside of the shirt it is darker carbon color, used next to skin.

The carbon is a byproduct from the water filtration industry, and is carbon that comes from coconut shells. coconut shells are very dense, and also a byproduct of the coconut milk and meat industry. this very fine carbon powder is extruded with the polyester, creating surface area equivalent to a football field in a shirt! this surface area allows incredible drytimes. it does not feel like a typical synthetic shirt, but much drier. the carbon also does a good job of NATURALLY absorbing odors.

They take the carbon out of coconut husks and fibers and put them in the polyester. It absorbs odor.

Mixed feelings

By:
May 6, 2009

The fabric his shirt is made out of is excellent. It wicks sweat really good and has a nice feel next to your skin. The seams have a weird position in the back, but that could just be for me. Also, I got the small and it is super long! I think this shirt would be good someone who is really tall and skinny.

good for me

By:
May 19, 2009

really comfy, does a good job of wicking. The collar is nice, has a bit of detail that makes it more than just a tee-shirt. Sharp colors. Wore one camping recently, while my other clothes came off smelling stongly of campfire, this shirt only had a feignt smoke smell, held off odors really well.
I wear a large, but ordered XL after reading some reviews. Fit great across my back and shoulders (where things can get tight in a large for me), but wasnt excessivly baggy in the arms or chest. I do notice the fit on these is a bit different than most shirts, but it worked out in my favor being a very comfy shirt ordering a size up.

OK Shirt

By:
May 16, 2009

I like the shirt but I have to agree with previous posts that the sizing is a little "interesting." The body fits comfortably but the pits are just a little too tight (basically the shirt pits are in my pits). However, despite this the shirt is still good for active wear. I haven't had any chafing or irritation so its just a weird feeling more than a serious product flaw. Good shirt overall but I would rather go with one of the "not-cotton" shirts made by Sport Science for Backcountry.

Pit Pincher

By:
May 14, 2009

I am 5'8 and 150 lbs. After reading the other reviews, I opted to get a large. The shirt fits well, but it does pinch my arm pits, and it tends to bunch up in the neck. The material works great and does what it is supposed to. I bought a merino shirt to hike and workout in, and this shirt dries faster and transfers moisture better than the merino shirt. The only bummer is the arm pit and neck issue. If it wasnt for that I would have given it 5 stars.

Like others, the fit was a little strange feeling for me but it does what it is meant to do. Awesome material, great breathability, one of my goto shirts for my morning or evening runs.

I am 6'3", 200lb with 42" chest and the Large is a good athletic fit.

Not sure

By: Backcountry.com Employee
September 30, 2009

I too am torn about this shirt. I really like how they look, and they fit me pretty well since I'm skinny, but the chest/armpit area does seem a lot tighter than other shirts. I'm also not sure about the Cocona material on the inside. I've only worn it a few times, but so far I've experienced some definite nippular chafage. Maybe that'll go away once it gets washed a few more times or something. I'm not really sure if it's the material or what, but that aspect wasn't too comfortable. Not a big deal - it won't stop me from wearing the shirt - but still worth mentioning.

Very Cool Goat Shirt!

By:
April 22, 2009

This is a well made and well designed shirt. It is comfortable and has nice cut shirt that is made for a slim to athletic body type. So far I have used these shirts in the gym, running and for outdoor and indoor racquetball and been very happy. The odor control is hard to gauge since I haven't worn one without washing for more than a day however I can testify that the moisture wicking works very well.
I agree with the previous post asking BC to make a long sleeve version of this shirt because I also have bought three of these and no doubt would by at least that many of the long sleeves.

Well it felt like a nice shirt, btu I couldn't find one that fit. The large was positively tent like for a thin 6'2" dude, and although the medium felt like it would work, the armpits were abrasive. bummer, i like the colors.

Bunching shirts

By:
May 2, 2009

I bought three shirts, but had to return them.Shirts look great and they feel great, then why did I return them?Because of
how were made(sewn). When I tried them on they felt great, but when I looked in the mirror I noticed material was bunching
under my chin.If I pull shirt down it disappears, but as soon I move my arms it bunches up.I tought maybe it was only one
of them, but after trying, all of them were the same.I have at least twenty performance shirts, but I have never seen anything like these,so I had to return them.I am 6'2" and 192 pounds with normal body,so I can't figure it out.Bad
batch?

Review Title

This is a great shirt, it stretches well and seems very durable. One issue I have is my baby soft skin didn't like the slightly rougher feel of the material but it never chafed on me even after wearing this shirt for five consecutive days of hard wear.

Superb

By:
July 10, 2009

I now have 3 of these in different colors, all large, and all of them fit differently, so I understand the complaints about the weird sizing. But they are all exceptionally comfortable, dry faster than any shirts I've ever had before, breathe very well, and block odors until you take them off. If you run, hike, bike, climb or ski, you need to try out this shirt, and if you see it on SAC or Tramdock, stock up.

Great Shirts, Ok performance

By:
April 20, 2009

Great fit, great look, overall awesome shirts. I'm a little disappointed with the performance of the Cocona material. It does almost everything it's supposed to except it doesn't really do well with the odor control. I'm a little spoiled by some silver-embedded materials that almost never harbor odor, but this was not up to expectations. You'll get away with a day's worth of sweating in this before it starts to stink, but this is not something you really want in your pack for a few days at a time.

I'd really like to see this in a long sleeve version, it would be great on a cool spring/fall day, or even a moderate summer day to block the sun. I bought 3 of these shirts and have been wearing them regularly and know I would do the same with long sleeves.

Long sleeves

By:
May 15, 2009

This shirt wicks great for my morning runs but the sleeve runs longer than my others tech shirts. I wear an S and it feels like my sleeves are about 1.5" to 2" longer than usual. Also the shirt feels strange at first because it pretty much stays in place instead of tilting forward like other shirts do when I lean forward. I got used to it after wearing it a few times. The cocona is working well in stopping odor but I have only used it for two weeks so far.

Cocona Shirt

By:
August 2, 2009

The only thing strange about this shirt is the fit around the lower neck and upper chest area... sort of puckers. The material is a nice weight so I would give that a 5/5. The stitching and assembly I would give a 5/5. The feel I would give a 4/5. The fit I would give it a 2/5 because of the upper chest area.. Not a bad shirt for the $, but I would not purchase another one because of the fit.

Fantastic Cocona Wicking Shirt

By: Backcountry.com Employee
August 17, 2009

Overall this Cocona wicking shirt by Backcountry.com is awesome. It keeps you dry, cool, and it has good durability. I agree with the review by Chris Davenport, the fit, mainly the arms, is a little strange. The underarm seam is a little high so it feels tight when you first put it on. I noticed this when I first put it on but haven't ever noticed it while running, hiking, biking, or playing ultimate frisbee.

The one downfall is the cocona fabric does hold odors like synthetic fabrics, however, it doesn't linger after washing.

Durability is strong. I've worn this shirt all summer long and it doesn't show any signs of wear and tear.

I'd buy another one for sure.

Great performance, arm fit issue

By: Backcountry.com Employee
June 1, 2009

Love the fabric and it's properties - they really work. I'm fairly skinny through the chest and this shirt hugs just perfectly. I feel like the arm sleeves flare out a bit - would rather have the shirt fit tight throughout. Of course, I don't have much to speak of in the biceps department, so there's that...

You would like the backcountry.com merino crew. It fits tighter throughout. http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Backcountry-Merino-Crew-Shirt-Short-Sleeve-Mens/BCC0149M.html
Give it a try. I love my two. These can shrink if machine dried so keep that in mind. Good luck.

I've had some issues with the sizing on several shirts in the past, so I decided to go for a small one... I just loved the fabric, colours and design, but I had to give it to my brother as it was too small for me, should have stayed with my usual medium size, my fault ! Bought an M it should be arriving any minute now :)

I must need to take a shower.

By: Backcountry.com Employee
May 11, 2009

Just got one of these and seems like a nice technical shirt. I cannot agree on the odor control thing though. Out of the box and one day of climbing at Castle Rocks, Idaho and it's RIPE. I've tried many shirts over the years that claim to have something in them that controls odor and none of them have ever worked. It's probably just me.
Also noticed that the fit was kind of interesting. I'm 6'0", 160lbs and the large fits well for active stuff like climing, but it is cut unlike any other shirt I've ever had being tight under the armpits and across the back. Not uncomfortable though, just a little different. I'd recommend this shirt but don't expect it to control odor.

Awesome Materials, Interesting Fit

By: Backcountry.com Employee
May 6, 2009

Using this shirt to train for the WBR and it does not small after three straight runs in consecutive days. Also, the Cocona/Polyester mix does a great job in moisture wicking and kept me comfortable even when I was going super hard.

The fit was interesting though. I am 6'0", have wider shoulders and a smaller torso and the Large shirt fit long in the length, relaxed in the torso, but tight in the shoulders/chest. I am still able to work with it though without and chaffing or discomfort.
