The incredibly well padded Black Diamond Mondo Crash Pad has become on of the most popular choices for protecting the tallest, scariest, highball boulder problems around. One solid inch of closed-cell foam caps four inches of open-cell foam for a beefy five inch thick landing zone that is nearly impossible to bottom out through. Ample surface area (44 x 66in) also creates a big target, so if you do decide to drop off from 25 feet you'll have a much better chance of hitting the pad. A flat-hinged design makes the Mondo a lot easier to fold shut and easier to carry to your secret spot. Believe it or not, this thing actually fits in the backseat of most cars—the whole backseat. Aluminum buckles, reinforced corners, and double-stitched seams add years to the life of a pad that's meant to get a beat down.
Bottom Line: Make sure the Black Diamond Mondo Crash Pad sits underneath your highball project when you pitch from the topout.
I am a Dad of a twenty one year old daughter. When she told me that she took up bouldering and the desire to climb boulders at Yosemite's Camp 4, I immediately search the website for reviews and recommendations about crash pads. The BD Mondo is the one for my daughter. Although expensive, I figure my daughter's health and welfaare is at risk. How can I say to anyone or myself, if my daughter gets hurt from bouldering, I wanted to save some money buying a less expensive and smaller pad? At 15 feet above the pad, the pad will look like a postage stamp below. If you want keep on living to enjoy more of the outdoors, get this pad.
I LOVE my Mondo. It has saved me many times. For hauling something so big on your back it is pretty comfortable too. It is hard to believe I once carried and trusted falling from 15 feet onto a crappy Revolution pad.
I've been bouldering in a gym for a while now and i want to get out onto the real thing. should i get a big expensive pad or can i get by on something smaller and cheaper?
If you don't want to spend the cash check out BD's other smaller pads like the Impact. That's what I have and I love it. Also, look at Metolius pads like the Cheap Bastard and Fat Bastard. However, if you see yourself bouldering much in the future, buy this pad. It's fantastic. Especially, if you're only going to have one pad, get this thing. It's huge, thick, and burly.
This thing is huge! It's a nice bit of insurance to have below you for sure. Great for the top layer of a pad stack. A bit hard to fit in my car, but worth it.
I Can't say enough great things about it. From a sick spill from the 12 to 15 face to the drunken friends needing a place to sleep instead of the floor this thing is a all in one. The comfort carrying is greatly enjoyed. invest in a great product.
As a Dad, I am more concern about her fall. Fortunately, the Mondo did fit the back seat of her 2008 Honda Civic. Just push the two front seats forward, release the recliners and fit the Mondo into the back seat. Than slide the two seats back and adjust the recliners. My daugther is 5'-1" and she loves the Mondo.
i just got one and am shoked how well it catches you it is worth every penny and is made of high quality parts and fabric so it will last a really long time.
