Black Diamond Ascension Nylon Standard Skins - 2005
Black Diamond Ascension Nylon Standard Skins do not have a tail attachment system, eliminating weight and drag. This basic skin is a favorite among backcountry skiers who are trying to cut ounces and don't want the bulk of other bells-and-whistles models. Without any tail clip, these skins fit any tail system out there. No more struggling to get the clip over your twin-tips.
Great skins that climb in most all conditions. Was suprised how well the skin worked with no tail clip but after a year of hard use I wound up installing a BD tail clip after the glue on the edges near the tail wore out a tiny bit. Was a pain to put on the tail clip, just get the STS or clipfix skins and save time in the long run.
I am using these skins on a pair of Dynastar Legend 8000 AT Skis. I have only used them a few times, but have been very impressed with them. I am only about 150 pounds and my skis are quite wide with a significant side-cut, yet the skins have held the slopes very well in varied conditions. The non-stick band down the middle of the skins is great. You don't need gorilla arms to pull them apart. However, beware of the trimming instructions that come with the skins. The instructions have not been updated for shaped skis. The non-stick band will be significantly off center if you religiously follow the directions if your skis are parabolic.
These skins run up the snow unbelievably well! Ice, powder, crud, high winds, sleet, they handle it all very well. Little heavier then I would prefer but the durability makes up for the weight 100 fold. Use them and love them!
I need to know if skins like these are right for me or if kicker skins could do the job. I'm not telemarking - just backcountry mountain trails (narrow). I skied from 6500 ft to 7900. Took 1.5 hrs to get up and 25 mins to get downand wished I had skins up and down. Any recommendations?
After a few uses all is well. Have 90mm skins on JAX and the sewed in tip clip even fits those. No need to spend extra $ for a micron perfect curved fit. Close enough, plenty o grip. Cheaters are good. Now can someone invent a way to make them shrink when not in use to fit in a pocket.
Write your question here...new to back country... how do you determine what size skins to get? my skis I think are 180cm, and they say 16mm sidecut. does the length even matter?
The length doesn't matter on these particular skins, just the width at the waist. Order the next size down from your width (e.g. 100 for a 105). If they're narrower than 90mm, order 90 and cut them down.
