Black Diamond Mercury Mitt - 2006

The Black Diamond Men's Mercury Mitt keeps your hands warm in the worst winter storms, ensuring you have the dexterity to set up your tent quickly, and get out of the weather. With a combination of Polartec Thermo Pro and PrimaLoft insulation, the Mercury Mitt is perfect when the mercury drops. The fully waterproof shell locks out moisture, and a leather palm with Kevlar stitching provides durability to withstand harsh use. The removable liner dries quickly and has a trigger finger to make setting up the tent and lacing your boots easy.

Bottom Line: The warmth of a mitten with the dexterity of a glove.

Warm mitts

By:
April 2, 2007

The Mercury mitts are well made, and very warm. For those days that a 200 gram glove doesn't cut it, break out these mitts. Don't seem to run big, as an earlier review stated, but room to stick in a heat pack, just in case.

mercury mitts are great!

By:
March 15, 2007

my hands have trouble staying warm, but not anymore. these mitts are sweet. it's like my hands go to the beach while the rest of me is out in the snow. they run REALLY big, so get at least one size smaller than you normally would.

Awesome Mitts

By:
February 15, 2007

These mitts were awesome on a recent ski day with temps only a bit above 0*F (probably below 0 wind chill). My hands never got cold inside of them and they were even warm enough to warm my hand back up if i had to take one of the mitts off to do something. As already stated, order a couple sizes smaller, I wear size XL gloves but i got size M Mitts, and they are actually a bit big when worn alone, however they fit perfectly with a thin pair of glove liners.

good glove, but don't pull to hard

By:
February 10, 2004

I had this glove and loved it but I pulled on the draw cord and it snapped off. Otherwise they were great when I went to return them for another pair they no longer had my size. I then got TNF Deludge glove not as good as the Mercury but what are ya gonna do that's life, good luck!

Always Warm

By:
February 21, 2006

My job requires standing and walking outside in any conditions, this jacket fit the bill when the temp dropped to zero with blowing ice. When other workers were looking for a place to get warm, I was able to do my job and keep warm on an 18hr shift outside. Great jacket!

Perfect for lower 48

By:
January 25, 2007

If you ever have to spend the night in the backcountry during the winter, MITTS can be the difference between being functional and having fun or being one of those too-ultralight people who ONLY brought gloves and has to hide in their sleeping bag as soon as it gets colder. These Mercury Mitts are made for the winter temperatures you will encounter in the lower 48 states after dark or during storms. It is important to note that they are not too warm, meaning they can be worn on very cold days when you are moving also. Many Himilayan/Alaskan temperature rated mitts never get much use out of those altitudes and climates. This is a durable mitt with the appropriate warmth you need to actually get a lot of use out of it and not have it gather a lot of dust.

worth every penny

By:
February 17, 2004

Expensive but worth every penny. I always have cold hands. But with glove liners and these mittens my hands were fine. Amazing considering we were skiing in Vermont where the weather was never ABOVE 20 degrees-yet my hands were fine. My only recommendation would be to buy the next smaller size than you would normally. I bought mediums and they were much larger than I expected.

Black Diamond Mercury mitts

By:
February 13, 2007

Used these on a winter presidential traverse in early February. temps were -10 at night, up to 20 in the day, winds up to 60 mph. I used these with powerstretch liner gloves and my hands were warm and dry throughout the trip.the liners dried well in my bag at night. I've also used them ice climbing on really cold days and my hands are always warm and dry.

Incredibly warm but way too big

By:
March 23, 2005

I bought an XS based on the information in a previous review about the mitts running large. These mitts run about 1 1/2-2 sizes large. That being said, they are incredibly warm and seem to be well made, and if they made them small enough for me I would definitely want them.

Mercury Mitt Warm but not as durable as I thought

By:
January 17, 2006

I used this mitt to climb Cotopaxi in Ecuador. At 19,348ft, it was very cold on the way up and at the top. I tried gloves to keep my hands warm and ended up resorting to these mitts. They were excellent, and I had no problem keeping my fingers warm. The liners on these are nice and toasty and coupled with glove liners and the idiot straps on the mittens, I felt that I could do whatever rope work I needed to do without exposing my hands to the cold. My only complaint, and the reason I give them a 3 instead of a 5, is that I noticed a slight tear on the inner liner. I was really disappointed in this, because I take excellent care of my gear. Nothing a bit of duct tape couldn't fix, but I have no idea how this happened, because I never removed the liners while on the trail. But in terms of warmth, I would go with them again. One of my teammates used Black Diamond Guide Gloves and she was very happy with them. So, I'm hoping it was a one-of thing.

Phenomenal

By:
January 24, 2007

I have nothing but good things to say about these mitts! They are the best value for warmth and durability. They were almost too warm on my Denali summit day! This is the second pair I have owned, as my first were stolen and this was one item that I had to have in my gear arsenal.

Decent but not great.

By:
January 27, 2006

These gloves are BIG. Definitely order at least a size smaller than normal. For as big as they are, they don't have as much insulation as you'd expect. Still warm, but you can probably find warmer. On the plus side, the liner does not separate the fingers. It has a slot for the index finger and you can put all the fingers in the other side for keeping warm. The liner pulls out so you can keep your hands warm while still having some dexterity with the thumb and index finger separated in the liner. This is far better than some mitts that separate all the fingers inside. That's the worst of both worlds. You still get the dexterity of a mitt but less warmth like a glove.

Great mittens

By:
March 29, 2006

Excellent mittens, and thanks for the advice to get a size smaller, Med. were perfect and Lrg. would have made for a poor choice. Hands stayed warm all day while in Canada during 0-20 degree days. The removable liner is the way to go too!

Black Diamond Mercury Mitt - hot units

By:
March 29, 2006

These seem to be bomber mitts. Very, very warm consider them to be too warm for anything above -5C. They give good dexterity with the trigger finger liner. For spring riding, I have been pulling out the insulating liner and wearing my light touring gloves under the shells. The shells are waterproof and seem tough as hell. The only gripe I could possibly throw out is that you almost need a third hand to tighten the cuff around your arm. My last mitts had a special cord lock that let you pull to tighten with one hand.

Mercury Mitten

By:
April 20, 2006

I live at Copper Mountain in Colorado and ski around 80 days a year. I have always had a problem with cold hands on the cold or windy days. I must have tried four different types of mittens in the last few years to no avail. The Black Diamond Mercury Mittens have solved my cold hand problems, they are wonderful! One thing—always get the mittens at least one size smaller than your normal size. I generally get extra-large gloves and mittens but I ended up with medium Black Diamond Mercury Mittens. I was able to exchange my initial order of large for medium without any hassle.

Irishman's review.

By:
January 4, 2007

These mitts are the business. As an avid hill walker who suffers from cold hands, I found them fantastic. They kept my hands toasty warm and dry. I especially liked the ease and speed I could take them off and on for fiddly work. This compensated for the small loss of dexterity compared to gloves.A robust, well-crafted, quality, big mitt. I'm happy with my purchase.

At 40 degrees my hands were too warm in these gloves. I also like the big cuff to keep the snow out of my jacket sleeve.
