Black Diamond Sabretooth Clip Crampons - 2006

The Black Diamond Sabretooth Clip Crampon is THE answer to the demands of modern ice and alpine climbing. Just like the Step version, but with the addition of a unique toe bail, the Clip accommodates boot without toe welts. Ready for anything from endurance-testing routes like Howse of Cards to your favorite waterfall ice, the Sabretooth's genius lies in its unique second-point configuration that provides balance and control on dicey surfaces. Serrated points grab and pull better than crampons without, and one size fits all design ensures a proper fit for precision on snow, ice, and mixed terrain. This crampon is light, highly adjustable and relentlessly versatile with its horizontal rails and semi-rigid design. Use the Step version with boots that have toe welts.

Bottom Line: The Sabretooth Step-In is a great all-purpose, all-conditions crampon.

I like how it can be used for so much stuff. Great for vert, glacier, whatever. It fits very solid on my Makalu and are so easy to adjust to my ski boot. And coming with the anti-clod plates, holy deal and a half! Don't waste your time with other junk, get these.

Sabertooth Clip Crampons

By:
April 26, 2006

These new "clip" Sabertooths were exactly what I needed. My older step-in Sabertooths are awesome for when I’m strictly on hard snow/ice, but the transition areas were always a compromise - leave 'em on or take 'em off?

I used my new "clips" this weekend (4-23-06) up a long bit of steep, hard snow on a mountain in Bosnia. I put them on as the snow steepened and needed the grip immediately (should've put them on earlier - lotsa exposure!). The "clip" style attachment allowed to me put them on right where i was - a very precarious place - without all the trouble my step-in's require. I simply put my boots (LaSport Nepal Expremes) in the cramp, weaved the strap through the toe bail and tightened. Done. Maybe 1 minute for the whole process - it was nearly unbelievable how easy, fast and secure getting them on was.

I was initially concerned about the strength of the poly(?) toe bail, but it is very stiff and strong. I am usually overly concerned about things like this (Murphy's Law), but the new "clip" toe bail felt no less-secure once on than my step-ins. I was really kicking in pretty hard and there was no shift, movement or anything that made me feel less secure. They may not be the best for water ice, but for general mountaineering, they're G-R-R-R-E-A-T!!!!

This is an all around backcountry crampon. I field tested several brands prior to purchase.
It provided extra degree of comfort knowing these crampons would perform when needed. Hats off to Black Diamond!!

BD Sabretooth Crampons

By:

Having trouble fitting them to my yellow Koflach boots. Front outside corner of boot won't stay seated in crampons. First try climbing water ice, they functioned great in spite of this, however I am reluctant to go walking on exposed rocks without the secure fit.

Best crampon made!

These crampons rock! A few things that set them apart from other crampons 1. the unique secondary point configuration providing more stability. 2. Versatility-these things can be used on steep technical ice as well as low angle mountain travel.(BD has done away with their “technical” crampon because this thing does it all) 3. very light.
