Black Diamond Sabretooth Clip Crampons

Not only is the Sabretooth Black Diamond’s best all-around crampon, but its new stainless steel design gives you lighter weight, higher durability, and added protection from rusting and snow balling. The heel clip and flexible toe strap accommodate any mountain boots with a heel welt, and the versatile 14-point design handles steep and moderate terrain with equal bite. The rear heel clip also features a low-profile adjustment system to dial in a secure and precise fit.

Bottom Line: Sink your teeth into any winter climb with the Sabretooth Clip.

14 points for all-purpose? I was thinking that all purpose typically had 10, and 14 was for really technical stuff like vertical ice. Has anyone used these for general mountaneering, and were you happy with the performance? I'm looking for an all-purpose that I can climb easy ice routes, but will use mostly for slope climbing. Thanks for any beta!

The difference between 10pt and 12 pt crampons are that 12pt crampons have 2 more points of contact when traversing horizontally or diagonally; therefore for general mountaineering (not vertical ice) a 12 pt, will provide more security in more situations. When front pointing, a 10 and 12 pt crampon will give you the same amount of security.

The number of points is not really indicative of much. I think the MOST technical crampons are the bolt on ones and they have around 8 points. I use these for general mountaineering, and they're fine, but a little overkill. You'll probably be better off with something like the Contact Strap unless you're doing a lot of front pointing on vertical stuff.

How do people typically secure the straps? I'm baffled as to the best way of doing that...

In particular how do you make use of the two metal rings? It's not clear to me how they should be threaded...

Step into the crampon, pull the bail over the toe, take the strap and put it through the bail and secure it by pulling it through both loops then back through the outermost one. When put on correctly, they will not move at all and feel very secure.

just how you see it. Step in to the crampon take the strap go through the band oover your toe back to the other side and double back through the metal rings...maybe that helps...just try and make it look like the picture

They might. If not, check out the Black Diamond Long Bars. Those would certainly make them long enough. http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Black-Diamond-Long-Flex-Center-Bars/BLD1121M.html
