Black Diamond Punisher Glove

The Black Diamond Punisher Ice Glove bridges the gap between ultralight and ultra-warm models to let you take on super-technical ice and mixed pitches in cold conditions. Their fleece lining keeps your hands warm without inhibiting the dexterity you need for technical moves and gear placements. The Punisher Ice Glove has a stretch Schoeller softshell with a BDry waterproof breathable membrane to give you excellent moisture protection. Black Diamond even added a tough Pittards Aromortan leather palm, because swinging tools, placing screws, and belaying can take a toll.

Bottom Line: When the going gets steep and weather gets cold, put your hands in the Black Diamond Punisher Ice Glove.

Well balanced glove- and tough.

Thicker, bulkier gloves may be warmer because they are made with more materials. More material- especially in the fingers- some dexterity is lost. The Punishers balance the spectrum between warmth and dexterity well. They are warm enough for zero degree days climbing (plus, I use them for backcountry skiing) but nimble enough to handle most ropes, bindings, and climbing gear while wearing them. One drawback: with no removable liners they dry a bit slow. (See image this page)

I've definitely used my Punisher ice climbing in temps colder than 15. I am always dumbfounded how much dexterity vs. warmth these gloves provide. I never have issues clipping/unclipping gear on my harness or placing screws/threads. Worth every cent. I doubt they'd work for you in -20 temps, though. That's definitely pushing it. The coldest I've I'm climbed in these--the temperature was likely hovering near zero (definitely less than 10). My hands would get cold while climbing if I overgripped, but on belay or the hike out, they were fine. Not good for skiing, though--already tried that. This is an ice climbing glove and greatly excels at that task.

Good Build

By:
December 29, 2008

Just got for Xmas, but here's what I notice. I have severely beat-up Cloudveil Ice Flow gloves from the last 3+ years. Everywhere my old gloves are worn through, the BDs have the necessary reinforced padding/stitching. For instance, there is added padding to the top of the pinky where each of my old gloves ripped. Also the leather section between the thumb and forefinger covers a smaller area - which is good since on the old gloves it was too much. Really only needed where you squeeze the tool. No padding on the back of the 1st 2 fingers like Ice Flows - not needed.

They fight slightly tight, but that is part of the dexterity plan. The leather goes over the finger from top-to-bottom, rather than side-to-side, creating a better smooth fingertip experience. When on, my hands literally rest with thumb and forefinger touching tips, perfect for the next screw. I even used the computer mouse fairly well with them on. Perfect for avoiding bulk but staying warm (I expect).

I want to buy some ice climbing gloves for antarctica. Cold but

I want to buy some ice climbing gloves for antarctica. Cold but dry. I'm thinking the BD Punisher for climbing with some dexterity and then at belays putting them into my Outdoor Research Alti mits (outers) for warmth. The BD Enforcers look bulky. Any thoughts?????

That sounds like a fantastic setup. The Enforcers would be hard to cram in a mitt.Adding to that: you'd have to get a size or two up from your normal fit for insulated mitts to fit. my OR mitt shells fit over my punisher gloves, but not the isulated liner...

Good for splitboarding

By:
February 26, 2009

I use these for backcountry and frontcountry splitboarding. they're warm enough most of the time, and too warm every once in a while, so their range is impressive. the nimbleness is the feature i was most looking for with these gloves, so i could transition from uphill to downhill quickly, which they perform quite well at! i find the cuffs too short for my needs much of the time. after a couple years of heavy use, there is some wear on the pittards, but overall, they seem to be holding up well.
