Completely redesigned, re-engineered and thoroughly tested by Black Diamond this season, the new O2 tele binding offers the ultimate in downhill performance. Created for power and response, this binding incorporates a one-piece, stainless steel toe box that wraps entirely around the boot for optimum power transfer. This unique toe box extends to each mounting hole and is stiffened in critical sections for maximum strength and responsiveness. The O2's under-foot cable routing provides a progressive fluid flex and ensures there is no “hinge-point” or mechanical feel in the turn. The O2's Anti-Matter Skid Plate has a variable-height design and contours down from front to back. This angle matches the sole of tele boots and maximizes energy transfer by creating a large platform for the ball of the foot. This feature also reduces tip dive and “rocker launch.” A completely redesigned and tested riser incorporates cable-exit points that are located further back than those found on the new O3 [BLD0594], to create an active, stiffer and more progressive flex pattern with the equivalent spring cartridges. A unique yoke adds lateral and torsional support, while a solid wire on the heel offers maximum durability. These two features produce an incredibly secure, highly responsive heel system. The O2 is topped off with a re-engineered heel throw that's easy to use with gloves and fits all tele-boot heel welts. K2 Insert compatible. Two climbing wires are included. ***IF YOU PLAN TO USE SCARPA BOOTS: This binding fits Scarpa men's T2's and T3's in all sizes, and women's T2's and T3's in sizes 7.5 and up. Fits Scarpa men's T1 and T-Race in sizes 6.5 and up.
Bottom Line: When downhill performance and power are key… the O2 is the binding of choice.
I did not care for this binding. I am a lightweight, aggressive skier and did not understand what all the hype was about. I could definitely feel the under-foot cables even w/ a beefy plastic boot. Traded this binding in for the G3 Roxy which is the best binding that I've tried.
I had last year's binding and I like it. This year's binding is the most beautiful telemark binding I have ever seen. It is a work of art. I love the way it skis it is solid and smooth. I love the dual climbing bars as well. This is the best telemark binding on the market. I love it.
This seems to be a great binding, if you can keep it setup. With no other tele experience to compare to, it seems that the cartridges migrate to an extreme loosened position way too easily. Otherwise, a great deal and a great binding. I love the fact that the cartridges are mounted under boot.
I've skied the O2, Targa, and 7TM and the O2 is by far my favorite. This binding adds a lot of power to your skiing!! The Targa and 7TM are much more neutral and you have to work a lot harder to put as much force into your back ski.
If you want a binding that makes tele-skiing easier, this is it!
while these bindings ski great, they have serious reliability/maintenance issues. once loctited, it is difficult to change/remove cartridges. the cartridges also go through a serious break-in phase which requires you to retighten them a lot in the beginning. even after this break in phase, they spontaneously release when skiing. (heel throw comes loose). this has been reported more than a few times. this release is very dangerous when skiing at high speeds or in the bumps. i crashed in a downhill race at high speeds when one of the bindings released accidentally and luckily survived. there's a reason the US national team skis other bindings....
The new 02 (2004 model) has seen some significant changes this year. The springs have a different connection to the cable and there is no way for the binding to loosen while skiing or hiking. The performance of the underfoot progressive spring is incredible.
My girlfriend is psyched as this year they came out with a smaller size that will fit her tiny feet.
Know the expression 'velvet gloves over a steel fist'? These bindings are velvet socks over a steel foot. The flex sensation is very smooth, almost like the binding isn't there, but the application of power to the ski is awesome. My foot to snow setup: Scarpa T1, BD O2, K2 Work Stinx.
I now have two pairs of these bindings and am enjoying them thoroughly. The flex is really smooth, and the binding as a whole is very solid and stiff. The one issue that I have run up against is the sizing. Black Diamond makes a large and a small cartridge, but the two sizes don't overlap. They just stop at 26 and start at 26.5. Unfortunately I am a 26 and either the binding is all maxed out, or it's sucked in all the way to the heel yoke and still isn't tight enough. I tried switching one of each from each ski but just looking at it (I never actually skied them like that) it looked funny and like something wasn't quite right. Good binding bad sizes: give it a 3.5
The O2 had a rough start, but currently it's one of the best tele bindings on the market. The under foot cable gives you great forward pressure on your tip, and helps you carve big aggressive lines. The only negative is the cartridge's spin loose during a hard day of skiing, but a little removable lock tight put a quick stop to that.
