Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's - 2008

Don the Backcountry.com Rime Softshell Pullover and head out for an autumn trail run or a spring ski tour. With its stretchy, element-shunning PowerShield material and streamlined design, this softshell provides high-end performance—minus the sticker shock. The Rime Pullover heeds the call when you need a super-light, breathable shell for high-aerobic activities. This piece dumps heat when you're charging up the trail and blocks warmth-stealing ridgeline winds at the summit. Wear the Rime alone over a base layer or add another layer on top for a little extra warmth—the dynamic, fitted cut provides all kinds of options. Lined with a soft, wicking fleece layer, the Rime Pullover feels great whether you're on a trail run, or early-morning coffee run. Reflective Backcountry.com logos on the sleeve and collar prevent you from becoming roadkill during night-time jogs, and the welded chest pocket holds your wallet, keys, or energy gel close for easy access.

Bottom Line: When it comes to lightweight, high-aerobic performance, nothing holds a candle to the Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket.

A great shirt

By:
August 19, 2009

I friggin' love this shirt. It's great as a warm baselayer, nice to sleep in and keeps off the morning mist, chill and dew. It is my go-to for cooler backpacking and hiking trips. The more I use it, the more I appreciate it. Hey, I just realized this shirt is on two different pages. What gives?

Nice jacket that keeps you warm in moderate conditions. Beware of the sizing - things are smaller than usual - I needed an XL instead of L. One negative - needs a drawstring on the waist. Customer service exceptionally good !

Best light weight softshell pullover ever. I wished there were some more colors and maybe an embrodered goat label as on shift jacket. I have been an arcteryx junkie and believe that these guys are producing same quality product at much more reasonable pricing.

Great Jacket

By:
April 28, 2008

Was able to gobble this up on for half price, and I really like this jacket. It breathes fairly well and rain beads on it a great deal...I have yet to be caught in a strong enough rainstorm to penetrate its outershell. I do have a couple small complaints. One, this isn't your minimalist jacket like those 4oz windbreakers we see, so I think a draw cord for the waist would of been a GREAT addition (I sometimes get updrafts and it slowly rides up due my the waist belt on my hydration pack). Also, the inner layer causes so much friction with my shirts that half the time it takes the shirt with it when I take the jacket off, even when I have the shirt tucked in. overall a great jacket, i'm just not sure if it's good enough for the full price tag.

I am about 5ft.7in and 165lb.my waist is 34.5in,chest is 39in. I usually wear a medium & like a trim athletic fit. I've read the comments & I'm concerned that the medium will be too tight. I plan to use this for winter jogging/areobic activities. I will probably layer under this pull over a light to medium weight base-layer for insulation. Should I get the large or medium?

I'm 5'7 and 160# with 32" waist and wide shoulders and I ordered a large. The sleeves are way too long and it fits a tad loose. But, if I wear anything under it bigger than a tee shirt, like a thick base layer, I need the extra room. So, with a base layer, a large is a good fit for the bike commute or winter trail run. If you just wear a tee under it, then a medium is good.

Great Fit!

By:
November 11, 2008

I love this pullover shell! Great athletic fit and the sleeves are actually long enough on the Large for a guy with a 6' wingspan to fit in to without looking like he's wearing his girlfriend's coat. I'm 6'0" and 170lbs and the Large is a great fit. Nice and warm, yet lightweight and easily packable if the day heats up. If you can find it on sale, you're doing even better (I got mine on Steep and Cheap for under $60)... but it's great either way!

I take it all back

By:
January 7, 2009

This is my second review of this jacket. I originally said that I wouldn't pay full price for it - now I disagree. If someone stole the one I have, I would probably pay double to get it back. This is hands down the best lightweight pullover I've ever seen. The PowerShield softshell material is head and shoulders above any other jacket material. Super functional - blocks even moderately heavy rain, nearly all wind, and oh so comfortable. The lining is perfect. The only thing I would warn of - I ordered a Large, then returned for XL (6',180, broad shoulders - also, the little extra length in the torso was nice...if you like a close fit, no need to order up). It would be nice if the logo was embroidered, but that's just me being picky.

Really Nice Jacket

By:
April 18, 2008

I agree with others in that I wouldn't pay full price for it, but I got the sale price and for that price I think it's incredible. I am 6', 180 with broad shoulders, so I had to return the Large for an XL. Now that I have a size I'm happy with, I find myself wearing it constantly.

The rime pullover is made from powershield material, the tau is a hard face fleece. I have used both and the powershield RULES! powershield is way more wind proof, and lighter weight and less bulk. the tau is good layering and would be fine in nice weather, but if it gets windy, wet, or snarly out there you would wish you had a RIME pullover

Great Product, Great Price.

By:
January 7, 2009

I picked this up on Steep and Cheap at a huge discount. Now that I've experienced it, I would probably pay the actual retail price for another. I wear this for cold weather running and it can't be beat. At first I thought it would be too light but it keeps me warm, breathes well, and is a perfect weight for running. I wear this over Patagonia Capilene 1 baselayers in sub-freezing weather (with or without precipitation) and it is perfect. Highly recommended.

Good Stuff

By:
March 4, 2008

When i first got it I thought it was too light to really wear on a variable day. I live in colorado and the saying goes if you dont like the weather wait 5 minutes. Then i took it up to bethod. I layer with a thin merino top and it was good in 40 degree sunny with ascent with gusting winds and a sahdy cold descent. Dumps heat while protecting from wind. I also bashed a fair amount of trees on the way down and didn't notice any abrrasions.....

Does anyone know how this compares to the Backcountry.com Shift Softshell? I know they're both made of Power Shield, but it looks like this might be a bit more light weight. Sorry for the cross-post, but I'm just wondering if there would be an appreciable difference between this and the Shift.

Indeed, the Shift is going to be thicker than the Rime. The Shift has a heavier fleece backing, however both have the same face fabric. The Shift is also equipped with more pockets and a full zip. Hope this helps

Excellent pullover of active cold weather sports

By:
January 2, 2009

I do a lot of running and have struggled to find the right pullover that can provide great wind protection and wicking.

The Rime Pullover does both very well. I also find the outer pocket is a great fit for my iPhone/iPod.

The fit is snug and athletic. I'm 5'10" and 190 with a 44" chest and it fits perfectly for me.

Pros: Great price. Great fit. Great protection.
Cons: Could be a little snugger around wrists and waist.

Money in the Bank

By:
March 11, 2008

Everything you need and nothing you don't - it's made from Powershield and is comparable to name brand softshells that cost twice as much. Mine has been great for XC this winter, and I can't wait to use it for alpine climbs once the weather turns. As far as fit, I'm 6', 190 lb, 33" waist and a L fits me very well - as someone else said, the fit is similar to Arcteryx gear. Bonus: Made in Canada, not overseas!

I'm 5 ft. 9 in. & weigh 167 lbs. I usually wear a medium & like a trim athletic fit. I've read the comments & I'm concerned that the medium will be too tight. I plan to use this for winter jogging/areobic activities. I will probably layer under this pull over a light to medium weight base-layer for insulation. Should I get the large or medium?By the way, I just bought a nike stretch soft shell water-proof breathable pull-over and soft shell pants at a nike outlet shop and used it for a 6 mile run this morning. I bought it on a whim because I never buy nike outdoor gear other than shoes. The soft-shell pants and pull-over was from their Nike Storm-Fit GOLF line of clothing. Yea...that's freakin right, GOLF line of clothing. The pullover and pants had a nice, trim athletic fit...no bagginess. The weather was about 28 degrees. With just a medium base layer, I never got cold or over heated when I got going. I was amazed. I'd be interested in seeing how the Rime compares!

If you're going to layer, get the large. If you like the tight fit, stay with the medium. Normally for your size the medium is accurate.I'm 5'10 170 and I ordered a Medium and a Large. The Large fit very well, with the sleeves a bit on the long side but still ok, and not much room left for layering. The medium was very tight all over, and only good if you plan on using it for road cycling or something simliar requiring a very tight fit.Thanks...that was just the info I was looking for. I need athletic fit that allows movement and light base layering. Looks like I need a large.

I really like it!!

By:
January 8, 2009

Everybody is right, it runs a bit small. I am typically a Medium and sometimes a small (5'8" and 165 lbs). I run in the Rime with a craft pro zero extreme base layer and there isn't any extra space. I have enough space and no complaints because it is just what I wanted. If you plan on wearing much under it at all I would suggest to size up. Some have complained about the lack of pockets. I use mine for running and don't want or need pockets. Others have complained about a stiff collar and it has some very slight stiffness that I think makes it look sharper on. I haven't found it uncomfortable at all. Of all the running pieces I have it is one of my favorites.

April 18, 2008

I have been using this piece for about a month now - backcountry skiing, mountain biking, and commuting to work on my road bike. Windstopper works great, the lining is very comfortable, the deep zipper provides great ventilation, and it seems to breathe well. Has been very water repellant so far, but I haven't washed it yet. I find the sizing to be ideal - an Arc'Teryx medium fits me like it is tailored and so does the Rime. The construction quality is outstanding and seems to match that of Arc'Teryx. I don't typically care about the appearance of gear like this, but have to say it does look great too. I am looking forward to other goat products! Absolutely outstanding customer service every time I have ordered from these guys as well.

I've worn this on several bikes rides with temps in the mid-30s and serious wind. With a base layer, it's been perfect. Totally blocks the wind, and breathability is great. At 5'10" and 160, Large is perfect for allowing base layer and freedom of movement. No post-ride stank. Why pay more for better known brands?

My girlfriend than picked me one up on SAC because she knew how much I was lusting after it in the XXL. It is totally windproof and water resistant as well. Fleece lined inside which my northface is lacking in the same material. The only drawback is the sizing. I always wear an XL and these are a size small. I am 6'2 220lb. This is a great piece- the fabric wicks well, and keeps you dry from whatever precipitation is coming down from above. I wore it on a sunny ice route which was dumping like a shower and it performed marvelously. I sized up from a medium to a large so I could layer under it, and I'm glad I did, I think the Medium would have been too short in the torso; I don't think that my torso is too long, so it's worth looking closely at.

If it's on sale for $80 or less, it's worth it. The collar is is super stiff, almost 70's looking and the seams look a little poor. I've used it skiing in the spring and it does fine on downhill or during backcountry skiing, but on a chairlift it doesn't stay all that warm. Definitely wear a capilene under it. It was great for backbacking, something high-aerobic where I'm pouring out heat. If you're going for lightweight warmth, spent the extra bucks for an Arc'teryx.
