Backcountry Access Tour Shovel System - Extendable

The Backcountry Access Extendable Tour Shovel System saves your back when you’re digging snow pits. This shovel extends out to 34 inches for smooth digging, while the easy-to-hold oval shaft and T-grip handle make working with gloved hands easy. The Tour Shovel System stows Backcountry Access’ Companion six-foot probe inside the shovel shaft for a compact package in your pack. The strong, 6061-series aluminum blade powers through set-up snow like a hot knife through butter.

Bottom Line: A shaft that extends ten inches? Revolutionary.

It does. Are you sure? I ended up ordering the non-extendable version from another source (not available at Backcountry) and it weighs 23 oz w/ the probe. Seems like a longer handle must weigh at least a little bit more.

Great Shovel, Sucky Probe

By:
June 23, 2009

This shovel is definitely a good buy. It's sturdy and efficient. I haven't had to rescue a friend with it thankfully, but it worked great on all exercises and practice rescues in the avalanche safety course I took this year. The probe however sucks. It's small diameter and only 6' long. It takes forever to put together since it doesn't autolock and has to be screwed together...even with practice and 6' just isn't long enough. If my buddy has a probe this short, I'll let him carry my Black Diamond 300 in his pack...and I'll carry the six footer. Great shovel, but buy a real probe!

Any thoughts as to this shovel/probe combo vs. the Voile (part VOL0066)? From what I can tell the BCA has a substantial weight/packability advantage, but sacrifices probe length. Thoughts, anyone?

Shovel nice, probe too short

By:
June 23, 2009

Shovel is great, lightweight and will fit in any bag as it collapses up real nice. The collapsible pieces have frozen up on me a few times and needed some serious prying to separate the handle into pieces.

Probe is way too short and lightweight. I realize I may be asking too much out of this system but it isn't worth buying this combo if you truly plan to put the probe to use.

I have not used the extended version but I own the non-extendable version and I hate it because it's way too short.
