Backcountry Access Tour System Shovel/Probe - 2006
With one of the lightest aluminum shovels and a stowable probe, the Backcountry Access Tour Shovel System saves space in your pack and gives you ultra-light peace of mind.
Among the world's lightest aluminum shovels, the Tour System packs peace of mind without a burden. The Tour's easy-to-grip oval shaft and T-grip handle make working with a gloved hand easier than ever. The Tour Shovel System stows a 6-foot probe inside the shovel shaft for an amazing, compact package. The 6061-series aluminum blade's lightweight strength powers through set-up snow and ice like a hot knife through butter. AVAILABLE IN FIXED AND EXTENDABLE LENGTHS.
Bottom Line: The Backcountry Access Tour Shovel System—raising the bar in shovel integration and design.
This shovel is very light, lighter than most plastic! The probe integration works very well and saves space. It is very sturdy and strong! No complaints.
This was a great purchase! Not only is it light, but it is VERY strong for the weight. The probe tucks neatly in the handle, and the blade (maybe a little smaller than I would have in serious avalanche country) fits neatly in outside pocket of most packs. Nothing out there compares for strength to weight ratio.
On a recommendation from a friend, I bought the aluminum "Tour Shovel/Probe" combo. My friends said it wasn't "cool" to go with a lexan (plastic) shovel because they can break off in your hands. The "Tour Shovel" is aluminum, is VERY light but feels very solid. I hope I never have to use it to dig my ski buddies out, but it seems like it would work.
So I know this is called the "tour" system combo, but I was still very surprised at the seemingly cheap quality of this shovel AND probe. The probe is short, and worse it's very thin. The shovel arrived with a dent in it (from shipping?) and also seemed kind of thin. I returned this item, yet I will still purchase Backcountry Access items in the future b/c I know they are usually quality and a good price.
