I contacted Big Agnes and asked them a similar question, about switching the included poles with carbon fiber poles. Here is Chris Tamucci's answer:

Thanks for the email Russ. The poles only account for some of the difference in weight. A lot of weight savings between the tents is in the fabrics and hardware used on the tent. I suspect that a Seedhouse SL3 will be lighter than a standard Seedhouse 3 with carbon poles. The carbon poles for a Seedhouse 3 cost over $200 and from what we’ve seen shave about 7-9oz. There is a 19oz difference between the two stock tents.

Just something for you to consider. You’ll get a lighter tent for less money by purchasing a stock Seedhouse SL3.

also the crossover pole is a shorter one that just keeps the fly off of the tent wall not the kind in the SL3 that goes all the way over the tent. There is also an additional pole that goes gives the vestibule more structure and room. It weighs a bit more though

Looks to me that the only difference is the pole material. Thus, you are paying $180 extra for one less pound in your pack. The poles are the major difference. The SL series use the DAC Featherlite NSL pole system & the standard Seedhouse series use the 7001 aluminum poles which increases the overall weight by 1.5 lbs. & yes the price difference is $180. If you want to lose the extra weight, you have to pay for it!

what does it mean that it is not "seam sealed?"

A 'seam seal' is a coating for fabrics that makes it waterproof at the seams. Most materials are relatively waterproof on their own, but having sealed seams is pretty important. There are a couple of options. One is to seal the seams yourself. Something like this item will do the trick.http://www.backcountry.com/store/MCN0004/McNett-Seam-Grip-1-oz-with-Brush-Applicator.htmlAlternately, I absolutely love my MSR Hubba Hubba HP tent. Most other people love theirs too. Take a look at the Hubba Hubba and the 3-person Mutha Hubba and consider getting those.http://www.backcountry.com/store/CAS0358/MSR-Hubba-Hubba-HP-Tent-2-Person-3-Season.htmlhttp://www.backcountry.com/store/CAS0421/MSR-Hubba-Hubba-Tent-2-Person-3-Season.htmlhttp://www.msrgear.com/tents/muthahubba.asp---- SOmeone else here - I disagree, some tents, though not seam sealed are still waterproof. This is basically arguing semantics though. Big agnes does not use the same term that MSR does. Check out Big agnes' site and see for yourself - http://www.bigagnes.com/str_tents.php?bid=8Also Bathtub floors are one piece, they are no seams so there are no need to be seam sealed. You will notice that if you pay 400 bones for any tent they are going to keep you dry. I love my Big agnes tent. MSr are cool but man this seedhouse series is insane and super light.Seam sealing new tents in 2008 is almost totally passe. Most of the high end tents have been factory seam sealed for quite a few years now.

I'm totally sold on Big Agnes

By:
January 4, 2009

I got this tent because of the weight and potential configurations with the footprint. If you get the footprint, this tent can be three totally functional, very different tents. My first trip with this tent was a short, two night excursion and the first night was 16 degrees F with 50mph gusts. We slept through the night in this 4.5lb tent! The vestibule is functional, but not huge. Ventilation is fantastic, but the wind doesn't sneak in under the fly. I've only tried two people with gear and it was decent. You could sleep 3, but the gear would have to stay outside and in the vestibule.

Bottom Line: Awesome, lightweight, versatile.

Specs? 2 poles... not 6?!?!?!

By:

Don't know where Backcountry gets their specs... The Seedhouse SL 3 has 2 separate poles (not 6), one pole runs the long axis of the tent with a "V"-hub at the front and back. The second pole aligns width-wise across the tent, puling the tent wider at the middle, and making the sides almost vertical.

This is a fabulous tent, it is certainly not the biggest 3-person tent out there, but I think it has the best interior-space to weight ratio I've seen. The only negative for me is that the vestibule is on the small side, and steeply sloping (not a lot of vertical height in most of the vestibule). The top of the rainfly-vestibule door is vertically over the bottom/base (ground level) of the mesh tent canopy, which in rainy conditions can let some water drip onto the tent from the top of the door when opening in the rainfly. Despite this issue, this is still my favoite backpacking tent. I mostly use the tent as a roomy-2-person backpacking tent. It is weight competitive with other 2-person backpacking tents, and much roomier. Plenty of room for two people and all gear inside. With only two inside it is easy to share the one door at the "head" of the tent (no climbing over each other to get out).

Nice Tent

By:

Great tent for two people. Cool looking design. Plenty of elbow room. The square footage versus weight was the best I could find...... 36 square feet / 4+ pounds. The 46 inch height is relatively decent, too. Easy to set-up. The all-in-one rain fly/vestibule had ample tie-downs to keep it taut for high winds. The color (sage) blended nicely with the forest / granite surroundings. The interior side and overhead pockets for small gear kept the inside clutter to a minimum. Without the rain fly, it's a summer delight for viewing stars. Excellent quality / workmanship.

I got the SL3 just before going off for a week of Scout camp in the Adirondacks with my son, and set it up in the living room just to make sure I knew what I was doing.

The set up couldn't have gone easier -- I particularly like how the tent clips to the pole system, and how the fly clips to the tent and/or footprint. I confess being surprised when I opened the poles the first time -- I didn't expect the main pole to open up straight and resemble a large, ham radio antenna -- and was a little concerned about bending it into the footprint grommet holes. My fears were unfounded -- it works just fine.

I used the tent on three overnight hikes in the Adirondacks and it worked just fine. One night we camped in an area full of prickly bushes, so I placed another tarp underneath my footprint to make sure no thorns punctured the footprint or tent floor. Maybe i was being overcautious, but the footprint is THIN!

On the plus side the SL3 is very light, small enough to fit inside my backpack, sets up very quickly, and appears to be very well made.

I was surprised it was not cooler inside the tent at night -- given all of the mesh -- but this probably had more to do with the fact that it rained all week and the ambient humidity was very high -- with little or no breeze.

My only real criticism at this point is the fact that this is a comfortable 2-man tent, rather than the 3-man tent it is promoted to be. I shared it with another adult on two overnights, and with both our sleeping bags against the outside walls, we only had around a foot or so between us -- certainly not enough room for a 3rd mattress pad and bag.

By way of minor beefs, I agree with others who have complained about the way that the tie downs come rolled up from the factory -- I needed my reading glasses to figure out how to untie them before staking down the tent. Also, while I really like the muted color of the tent, fly, and stuff sack, I wish that the stake and pole bags came in more vibrant colors -- it can be tough to find them at dusk if they blow away from your site.

Overall, I did a ton or research before committing to the SL3, and I'm very glad I bought it. I expect to use it with my son on many trips to come.
