Big Agnes Seedhouse SL 1 Tent 1-Person 3-Season - 2007

Backpacker Magazine praised the Big Agnes Seedhouse SL 1 Tent as being “very nearly the perfect 3-season solo tent.” The SL 1 while the SL1 provides enough space to sit up and fumble around in, its light weight and compactability make it more like a bivy sack. The Seedhouse SL 1's weight makes a great tent when packing light and moving fast is critical. When it's time set up camp, clip the pole frame into the tent body for an ultra-quick, one-person shelter.

Bottom Line: Travel light, and plant the Big Agnes Seedhouse fast.

Lightest Solo Tent Available, yet . . .

By:
January 3, 2007

First let me start by saying I've had this tent for 2 years, and it just keeps on working. Lightweight, packs up small, and roomy laterally. On the downside, getting in and out of this puppy is a head scraping experience, but just barely. Also, be prepared to bring plenty of stakes to get a stable platform. During one high-wind situation, I had to reposition the tent to increase stability. Hope Big Agnes considers two hubs in the poles versus the current one to increase stability (e.g., MSR EoS). Lastly, I do most backcountry in the Appalachian's, and I have yet to wake up to a wet interior; great ventilation!

Great Tent

By:
July 24, 2007

I have been tent backpacking for many years but this is the first 1 person ultralight tent I've ever had. It is great. Set up easy, very light, kept out the bugs and kept me dry in several torrential downpours. I love it.

OK but .....

By:

I've used this tent in the Tetons and also along the AT in Maine.

First the plus side: Its light; compact; easy to set up and move; and I'ved experienced no leaks yet, even in heavy prolonged rain.

Negatives: The length is a bit short, at 6'-3" tall I find my feet tend to touch the end of the tent. The tent does not seem to ventilate very well with the vestibule in place and closed. As a consequence the tent tends to sweat inside (making for wet feet in the morning (see above)). The small interior, and low descending ridge makes prolonged stays less than ideal. The biggest negative I have found however is that when the vestibule is opened accumulated rain water tends to pour into the tent from above.

the epitome!

I work for backcountry.com and I’m here to tell you this is the one. I'm six foot four and I can stretch out in this baby. This thing is touted as a one person but it is wider than my tnf canyonlands which is a two person tent. I took this on my wonderland trail trip around mt. Rainier which is a 100 mile, 20,000 ft elev. Gain and loss, 12 day trip. It is the lightest, roomiest tent I’ve found. Yes you can find lighter, you can go with a bivy or tarp, or another 1 person tent. Are you going to climb into your sleeping bag which is inside your bivy if you get to camp at 2:00 pm and there are a ton of bugs and it's 70 degrees? Can you sit up in it and change clothes or add a layer? Is your tarp going to keep the bugs away? Can you take the rainfly off your tent and look at the stars and still be this light and roomy? Didn't think so, me neither which is why I chose this one. It weighs less than 3 lbs. Just get one, you'll thank me. One note, keep the Velcro away from the mesh, it snags easy, light weight almost always comes with a compromise but like all gear if you take care of it, it will take care of you. Happy trails!!

Best Solo Tent

By:
September 7, 2004

I've gotten used to sleeping under a tarp but since I found this tent I've decided to go back to tent camping. This is a Great tent!! Its Super light - almost as light as my tarp. Its very easy to set up and I stayed dry during two nights of rain. I've tried two other one man tents but this is the best by far.

First Trip with Big Agnes

By:
September 17, 2004

My first trip using the Tent was a little fustrating. The tent was advertised as being semi self standing but what I found was a tent with several stakes and a fly with many tie downs which made setting up more complicated then I wanted. The tent is light and once set up is plenty roomy for one person. I am 5'8" tall and I think that a person over six feet tall would feel a little pinched for space.

Big Agnes Seedhouse 1SL

By:

The solo tent I spend days of research to find is the SL1. A paltry 2#-14oz for 22SF of free-standing space compacts down into a big summer sausage roll about 15" long. The three-pole design shock corded together with a hub is perfect for setting up in the dark. A Brunton Glorb lantern heats it perfectly, albeit the mesh is very sensitive to heat and you need to keep heat centered. The vestibule is big enough for a pair of boots, bear spray and a small day pack. Impervious to 25 mph winds and excellent zippers. Nice tapered design would fit a 6' person nicely. Room inside for my pack and rifle. No condensation, although some frost on the top of the mesh ... it was 18 degrees outside! Mesh is so fine it sublimated before accumulating. If it's complex to set up you either have problems tying your shoes or didn't take time at home to walk through the setup in your backyard. All components are high quality. Tent's a little pricey, but some stores will sell for less. Best light solo tent I've tried ... beats MSR hands down.

Super Light and Roomy

By:
February 15, 2007

I was using the Go-Lite Lair tarp for a while but have been reaching for my "Little Agnes" (as I like to call the SL-1) more often, thanks to it's superlight weight, spacious interior and excellent protection from the elements. I've used it in torrential rain, summer heat & humidity and late spring frost, and was comfortable each time. My only complaint is that the vestibule is rather small and makes it a bit tough to get in & out of the tent during rain without a small amount of water getting in (this is easily erased with a small camp towel).
However, I was amazed at how much internal room there is when I am inside the tent. I have plenty of space to put my pack at my feet, and enough room on either side of me for my clothing stuff sack, toiletries, book, etc.
The tent packs down to 6x12 using a compression sack and carrying the poles separately. Overall, I'm amazed at the combination of light weight and comfort!

A rough and bumpy road leads to heights of greatness.

I'm 6'3 and I just fit in this tent. I have a long Marmot sleeping bag that I kind of have to bunch up a little near my feet to keep from pushing against the tent wall. The reason I chose this tent is because of the weight, and it beats a bivy. Also it's not single walled tent so there is barely any condensation and ventilation is great. My regular prolite Thermarest fits in it, a large Therma could problem to fit in it, but I try to keep my weight down. There are clips that attach to the poles around the door but the long center pole has to be threaded through loops on the tent body. I wish there were clips for the long pole so I could use the fast fly setup during rain then just clip the tent body inside the rain fly. Instead you have to put the tent up first then put the rain fly on second which gets the inside of the tent wet. Vestibule fits my Gregory G-Pack but probably wouldn't fit a larger pack. This is the best and lightest single person three-season double-walled tent I've found and I tried out a bunch. I hope to see in next year’s model a few inches longer and clips on all the pole-to-tent connections, not loops.

Seedhouse SL 1

By:
August 1, 2005

This tent is extremely light, well made and easy to assemble. The fly needs to be staked to be effective; otherwise, the tent is free standing. Stakes are included. I would also get the footprint. The entire rig held up quite well in a couple of hailstorms on the JMT in the Sierras this July.

Smart, Light and.. Big?

By:
July 14, 2006

I received my SL1 yesterday and thought that I must have received the wrong product, because the small box felt empty. But inside I found the complete tent with fly, poles, stakes and even guy lines attached to the fly for staking it out. Of course, I needed to set it up immediately; which I did in under 5 minutes the first time. All components, fabric, and assembly are first quality. I noticed the factory sealing of the floor and fly, the doubled fabric at the corners, the triple stitched seams at pull points. Excellent. The next thing I noticed after set up was, "This thing is big and TALL for a solo." Other smart notables are the quality of the zippers, the large vestibule area and the light reflective piping on the zipper pulls and the included bundling lines and guy lines. Very handy for finding those small, otherwise invisible critical parts by flashlight.
I am sure that I have the perfect solo tent for the Alaskan wilderness trip that I'm taking soon.
