Forget about icy carves down the blue runs—the Arc’teryx Men’s Stinger Jacket lives for making steep, deep turns in the most epic snow conditions known to man. Arc’teryx made the Stinger with three-layer waterproof breathable Gore-Tex Pro Shell fabric and tricked it out with all the ski-minded features you need to slash any line in the white room without hesitation. WaterTight zips seal out drips on wet days, and the integrated RECCO reflector adds an element of safety on gnarly inbounds days. Arc’teryx also added a gripper powder skirt and high cinching collar keep cold smoke from blowing inside, and the stowable hood fits right over your ski helmet.
Bottom Line: Comes in various colors, but works best covered in white.
I'd suggest measuring for your sleeve length (see the sizing chart by size selector) if a Large will have long enough sleeves, do that. XL will probably pretty baggy around your torso.
I've put quite a few days on my Arc'teryx Stinger jacket, and I'm convinced it's the best ski shell I've ever seen. A few standout points that make it so; extra tall, fully fleece-lined collar. You can tuck in to the collar when it's dumping and blowing and totally hide your face, but it doesn't get in the way while ripping. I like the roll-away hood, because it's not too bulky, and the collar can be cinched from inside when the hood is tucked away; fits over my Smith helmet just right. Nice pocket setup; internal stretch pockets hold contents securely, but aren't floppy when they're empty. Lastly, as with all Arc'teryx ski jackets, fits so nice; no extra fabric, articulated arms move freely with any amount of layers, and bombproof. scratched through many trees (and over a few rocks) and it's in perfect condition! And the color is great, good vis, but not too bright.
It really depends upon what you mean by warm. It is a serious shell, keeping all the elements and wind out, but it is not an insulated jacket. How warm it is depends upon how you layer underneath it. This allows great versatility, so that on warmer days you can wear just a baselayer, while if it's bitterly cold then you can add a layer or two of fleece, etc to be as warm as you want.
I just received my new Stinger jacket. I was hesitant to purchase this jacket primarily due to the cost however after reading numerous online reviews, tried it on at a local outdoor shop I was sold. Its top of the line bomb proof. Quality construction all around. Fit is perfect. Wore it last night in pouring rain and nothing gets through it. Cant wait for the snow to fall. This piece of clothing I will have/use for a very long time.
Just hoping someone could tell me if this is the right jacket for my needs or if there are other jackets to recommend. I want good visibility (I ski with my 3 kids so want them to be able to pick me out in a crowd), wamth at 15-30 degrees F skiing in the East, and not overly bulky. Sizing help would also be appreciated - I am 5'10", 175 lbs, size 40 jacket, so I am guessing a medium.
Jeff, I'm almost exactly your size...I am 5'10" and 175 with a 41" chest...the medium in this jacket works fine unless you are considering a couple of layers and a denali fleece or the like. You would probably swim in the large-the snow sports products run somewhat larger especially the Sidewinders and stinger. If you buy from backcountry.com returns are no problem. These are great jackets!
This will definitely fill all your needs and go above and beyond, but I'd recommend a large. Arc'teryx gear tends to be pretty form-fitting and you may want room for layers.
Write your question here...Does this have a zip in fleece liner available? If not, which jacket would you recommend for skiing that does have a zip in liner?
The Arc'teryx Stinger doesn't use a zip-in liner (none of the Arc'teryx jackets do)because it creates a stiff panel down the middle of your chest, as well as a potential cold spot where your insulating layer gaps. I'd suggest wearing a separate insulating layer(I like the Tau pullover or the new Atom jacket)which also gives more options for fine tuning your warmth.
