The Arc'teryx Women's Hercules Hooded Softshell Jacket includes a high-loft polyester interior for maximum warmth and an air-permeable shell for increased breathability. Basically, this Arc'teryx jacket helps you stay warm in frigid temps without causing you to overheat during aerobic activities. The Hercules Hooded Softshell Jacket's stretch-woven Polartec Power Shield shell fights off moisture and moves with your body as you hike, climb, or ski.
Got my Hercules Hoody today and I am 100% pleased. Great middle layer for under my hard shell. Comfortable, soft, flattering lines- total package. Longer shirt tail back to keep kidneys warm- great for snowboarders. Got the Caramel at a great price- color is a warm buttery yellow/gold- not at all garish or showy. Plenty of room in the shoulders/arm pits for broad shoulder girls and not baggy in the waist/ hips. Order up if you're between sizes and want to make sure there's room for a thicker base or merino layer. Arms are adequately long- mine are ape like and the cuffs still brush my wrist. Best of all it's made in Canada, not a trans-pacific sweat shop and I didn't have to warm the planet by shipping a 3 pound coat 12,000 miles.
Just received the scarlet today for our daughter (hope she's not reading this). This looks great but she may prefer something just as warm but that's a little longer. Wouldn't HAVE to be Arcteryx but their quality has spoiled me. My Theata AR is five years old and looks (and performs) as good as new.
Anyway, I need a Plan B for Christmas. Any suggestions? Thanks.
When I've looked around in the past for longer cut softshell jackets, they seem to be hard to come by. I don't see anything from the typical outdoor manufacturers that look better than this. However, some other options in Arcteryx's lineup might include either the Scarabee jacket or the Stingray jacket. Both of these are made with Gore Softshell material. I wouldn't say these are softshell jackets by any stretch of the imagination, but they are waterproof and they do have a light-fleecy material on the inside (the Scarabee is a high loft and the Stingray is a low loft). Don't know if either is really what you are looking for, but it's the best that I can see. If you want something that is definitely warmer, look at the Sceptre jacket. It has a GoreTex ProShell outer fabric, with a Primaloft insulation. I have the men's equivalent, and it is awesome - fits well, not baggy and feels like a light blanket when you are wearing it.
OH my gosh I am in love. This jacket is so cozy and it kept me warm hiking in the Sierra Nevadas of Spain in snow. Good for layering in super cold, and good with just a sports bra under on a crisp fall hike. I wear it around town with a t-shirt under in FL winter/Fall or when it rains(40-60 degrees). I was a bit concerned about the lack of pit zips, and it can get toasty if the weather warms up, but that's why you layer! 100% worth it, and you can't beat the sale for the Scarlet one! I am 5'6", 120lbs, and DD and fit in a small, but I do have small shoulders/arms. (I wear small/xsmall shirts) I returned a Marmot because I looked like a Marshmallow stuffed in a plastic bag it was so tight in the chest and too short in the waist. This one has a nice lean cut but enough room to breathe in the chest. It's also a a little longer in the back (barely noticeable) to keep the wind out of your pants. Oh I am just in love :) I even wear it around the house sometimes. It's like the comfort of your bed anywhere you go.
This is my first softshell jacket and first Arc'teryx item. I had tried it on at a store and could not believe the deal on Backcountry.com, that I bought it that same day online.
I wore it while skiing yesterday. It was mostly cloudy, probably sub 50 F. I wore an Under Armour long sleeve running shirt (compression fit) and a tank underneath the jacket, and never had to put on another layer. If I felt cold, it was from the breeze hitting my face while on the chair lifts.
A soft rain began falling as I rode to work on my bike this morning. The jacket kept me warm and somewhat dry. However, the inside of my elbows got wet and in the middle of my belly where water seeped through the zipper (small spot).
Even so, I love this jacket. My boyfriend is jealous. I can't wait to try it out in Yosemite during the winter months.
I know its a pretty open ended question, but How water resistance is this jacket, also my women is 5' 2, 115 pounds, what size would be the most comfortable for her?
I'd give the Arc'teryx Hercules Hoody a 7 of 10 on water resistant scale- snow falls right off, if it's really raining, it will get wet. It also will block about 60% of wind, but is still super breathable. For sizing, Small will fit best, for all your women.
I love the fit of this jacket! I am 5'11 and was pleasantly surprised when I tried it on as arcteryx tends to run short. It has enough room for light layering too. Although I haven't had the chance to weather test it yet as it is August, I am sure that this won't disappoint. Very soft inside and the slate color is a deep graphite gray (almost black) with deep pink zippers (not red as pictured)...great go-with-everything color.
WHICH ONE IS WARMER, OR ARE THEY THE SAME??? THE ARCTERYX GAMMA SV HOODY? OR THE HERCULES HOODY? THEY ARE THE SAME PRICE AND BOTH ARE POLARTEC POWERSHIELD HIGH LOFT.
The difference between the Arc'teryx Hercules and Gamma SV hoody is in the face fabric. The Hercules uses the 02 version which is less wind resistant, and more breathable. These two jackets will be about similar warmth without wind- Gamma blocks about 90% and Hercules about 50%. For layering Hercules is more comfortable, as outerwear, the Gamma offers more protection.
I bought this jacket for a Rainier climb I just returned from and it was the perfect soft shell! Like everything Arc'teryx makes, it's durable, fits well, and does what it says will do. It also has a nice shape. I've noticed a lot of jackets don't seem to be shaped well for women, but this jacket is. The fleece was warm and cozy and while I hung out at camp I just threw my down puffy on over it and felt great. I have the slate color and love it. Got tons of compliments on the mountain!
My new favorite jacket. Warm, comfortable and stylish. Great longer women's cut fit. The hood makes an excellent addition and enables this jacket to rank high as both an under layer and a stand alone jacket. I won't go anywhere without it.
until my winter arc teryx arrives. I ordered this coat in slate for a trip to Alaska. I fell in love with the coat for too many reasons to list: warm, wind protection, hood, soft inside, kept me dry...the list can go on. I wore this coat motorcycling and ocean traveling as a base layer, I wore the coat as a top layer for making campfires, hiking 3200 ft, and traveling to the end of the road, McCarthy. It looks great, and makes me feel happy! It makes me look forward to a Wisconsin winter because I know that I will be warm. If I could, I would give this coat more than 5 stars.
