Durable cotton canvas material makes the Arc'teryx Men's Gamut Shorts burly enough to take on tough hikes and climbs weekend after weekend. Their 8-inch inseam fits comfortably under a climbing harness, and the loose fit won't make you look like you lost your way during a road ride. Arc'teryx gave the Gamut Shorts a gusseted crotch for ease of movement to make your hike more comfortable.
Bottom Line: Arc'teryx takes durable shorts to the next level with the Gamut Shorts.
This company has recently sold out to the third world, Thailand to be exact. Yet the price is the same!? I would pay $100.00 + for these shorts if production was still in Canada.
Arcteryx shorts are a little weird for me. I run about a 29-30 inch waist, but 30 inch shorts from arcteryx make me look like I'm in an advertisement for some diet product. They don't fall down (thank goodness) - they hold at the right height, held by my hips. So, last time, I got 30-inch alibi shorts, they had this problem. This time, I got a couple pairs of gamut shorts with a 28 inch waist, figuring I'd send them back if they were too small. Well, they fit, and I think I like them better at 28 inches than 30 inches, but they're slightly tight. The gamut shorts feel like they're cut different than the alibi shorts, with larger leg openings, and shorter legs (they feel more square than the alibi shorts). The fabric and quality are quite good, and I'm happy I bought them.
These shorts are incredible!! No questions asked, these shorts are where it's at. They've stood up to everything I've put them through - hiking, biking, climbing, everything. I always know that when I put these on, my legs are good. Granted, they're a bit on the shorter side of things, but I always like to show a little leg, you know? Hands down, these shorts should always be your first choice.
I've always like Arc'Teryx gear but I did not like these shorts. I sent them back twice trying to get a size that fits and determined that there isn't one. The only waist that fit me was very tight on the thighs. I have thicker thighs from climbing but this isn't a regular problem, not to mention that Arc'Teryx should know this about their customer base. Beyond fitting, I found the shorts very boring. No extra pockets or anything beyond a typical pair of shorts. I gave them a shot because they were on Steep and Cheap... pretty obvious what they were doing there.
I got a pair of these several years ago and feared that they were out of production when lo an behold I found them here and on sale none the less! I LOVE THESE shorts and they have served me well from Indonesia to Vietnam to Las Vegas. They are well built, very comfortable, fit well and have pockets that don't dump your change all over the inside of your car when you sit down! Oh yeah, who cares if they are now made in Thailand instead of Canada! Thai food is better anyways and Chiang Mai is more fun than Ottawa!
