Arc'teryx Gamma MX Softshell Jacket - Men's

Designed for active backcountry pursuits in cool temperatures, the Arc’teryc Men’s Gamma MX Softshell Jacket is a tried and true original that provides light weather protection with functional and ergonomic stretch. From steep mixed climbs to hiking windswept ridges, the Gamma MX resists wind and moisture while remaining highly breathable. No-Lift underarm gussets ensure the jacket won’t ride up when you reach for the next handhold or tool placement.

Bottom Line: Stretchy, protective, and breathable—an Arc’teryx classic.

Evolution in action

As a longtime devotee of the original Gamma MX (I've been wearing them for 7 years) I'll give some insight to the new version. Fit is basically the same: athletic, long sleeves, fairly close torso. This MX uses a new fabric that is a bit lighter, dries more quickly, and has a softer face. It maintains the old characteristics of being super durable (much more than you'd expect from a soft face fabric) lots of stretch, blocks about 90% of wind and very water resistant, while breathing much better than laminated soft shells. Have no fear, it's really an upgrade from the classic Gamma MX of old!

Brandon is spot-on--I've been wearing Gamma MXs for about 5 years now, wearing them 350 days a year in SF, and it's time for a new one. The local REI had the blue in. The material feels a fair bit nicer to the hand and does seem lighter/maybe a bit thinner. Also, I consider it an improvement cosmetically, as the chest pockets are no longer of an alternate color, but rather have minor accents along the zipper edge, so the look is more subtle. Considering the range of activities in which I wear it, from sporting to social, I consider that a positive change.

An upgrade of the classic Gamma MX

By:
October 22, 2009

Ok. So here's the deal. I have owned a Gamma MX for several years now (I have owned three). I was skeptical when Arc'teryx decided to revamp their classic softshell. I decided to try it out and I never thought they could improve this jacket, but I was wrong. Every feature they changed for this jacket made it better. It is a half inch longer in the body, which makes it a much better fit. The old rubber/plastic wind flap of the old version always rubbed on my neck and they replaced the upper portion of the wind flap with a soft fleece backed fabric (perfect). The cuffs of the past version tended to stretch and not regain their elasticity. Now the cuffs are made of a more stretchy fabric and retain their retention. I really like the new waist drawcord of the new version as well. Instead of adjusting them in the front pockets, which requires taking off your gloves, they are now in the typical place on the sides where you can reach and adjust with gloves on. The attention to detail and quality of this jacket is as good as ever. This is definitely an upgrade from the previous version.

This is an amazing piece of clothing and I wear this every day all seasons. Fits true. I get mine almost 200 dollars cheaper though.

Too pricey

By:

Top quality, but simply way too pricey for me to justify. Also found the neck too large without a cinch cord. I went with a Mountain Hardware jacket that is very nice for one fourth the price of the Gamma MX.

I'd have to agree. Im tall and thin so need an XL for arm and torso length but the neck is way too big unless you have an 18-19" neck! Only downfall. Other than that nice.

The Standard by which everybody else is Measured

This is THE softshell in my opinion. The construction and materials of the Gamma MX are outstanding. This jacket can handle the majority of outdoor pursuits you throw at it. If you don't belive it, simply read the litanny of reviews from others who have been using this piece for nearly a decade. It is a classic Arcteryx jacket in style and fit. If you are looking for a serious softshell pick up this guy or the Hooded Gamma MX.
