Arc'teryx Fission SV Jacket - Men's

The Arc'teryx Men's Fission SV Jacket uses a combination of waterproof breathable Gore-Tex Pro fabric and ThermaTek synthetic insulation to fight off the worst winter weather. The days of layering a thick shell jacket over a bulky fleece have passed. This Arc'teryx jacket features a helmet-compatible hood, so you can wear it over your brain bucket while ice climbing or skiing a sketchy line.

Bottom Line: You'll laugh in the face of the winter's worst storms.

The Arc'teryx Fission SV is the warmest. It's got 200gm Primaloft, and the Fission SL has 120gm equivalent. Thermatek is basically Primaloft that has been saturated with water repellent for even more wet weather loft protection. Additionally, the Fission SL has a lighter face fabric, shorter cut and pit zips.

Great for everything

Bought this jacket from Backcountry and LOVE it! It is great for skiing and just hanging around the campfire in cold weather. The Gore-Tex Pro Shell is amazing! I tested it in some harsh rain on Mt. Elbert. It was solid!

I am considering the fission sv or the kappa sv for use around town. Which would be the warmest as i am trying to avoid layering.

I think you are going to find that these are very similar, with the Kappa SV being slightly warmer. The Fission SV uses a mix of 200g/m2 and 133g/m2 Primaloft while according to the website the Kappa SV only uses 200g/m2. I'd guess that the lighter insulation used for the Fission SV is in the sleeves, which actually seems like a pretty good compromise to me. The bigger difference between these two jackets is the shell fabric: the Fission SV uses the Gore-Tex Pro Shell while the Kappa SV uses Windstopper. Both are windproof, but only the Fission is waterproof.

I actually just realized that the backcountry.com specs don't match up with Arcteryx's website. According to the Arcteryx website, the weight of this jacket is 2 pounds, 4.1 oz (1000g), not the 21.6 oz/614 grams listed here. Also, the insulation is Primaloft, not ThermaTek.

Diggin' it

By:
December 9, 2008

I used the Fission SV last Feb. '08 while on an 8 day ski trip (the Butte, 'Basin, Breck)
White-out most of time w daily temps in teens at most. Strong subzero winds above treeline,
and this jacket was perfect w minimal layering. It's too warm if skiing in temps of around 25 F on up.
I'm 6'-1" and around 200 lbs and the Large is perfect and roomy enough for aggressive alpine skiing.
I pair this w my Minuteman pants. Powder never got more than knee deep and was fine. Deeper powder may
require more in the way of a gasket....which this doesn't have.
It's also a perfect "urban winter lifestyle jacket" (mine's black) Doesn't look like a geeky ski jacket in the city.
Works flawlessly while walkin around in Boston winter winds (Gales combined w temps in single digits/teens)
Only gripe: Inside of collar's lining is fraying a bit from whisker stubble rubbing. (Too soft nylon) wish it was
a micro fiber touching my face instead. Also the hood won't stash, but not a deal breaker, because you'll only be using this
thing when hoods are usually needed.

is the outside shell hard or soft?

I don't particular like hard shell, makes you feel like wearing a cardboard. understand hard shell is good for windproof/rainproof, just don;t like the way it is.

It is a hardshell. Sounds more like you are looking for a softshell. Arcteryx makes plenty of good ones so I would just enter arcteryx softshell into the search bar and that should give you the best results.

NO PITZIPS

By:
October 30, 2008

As usual, Backcountry has it wrong. The Fission SV does NOT have Pit-zips. I made them aware of this error 2 weeks ago, and the listing is still wrong. One star for the companies false advertising.

I'm considering either teh ArcTeryx Fission SV or teh Arcteryx titan. Does anyone know differences or recomemnd one over teh other....looking for a very warm, windproof, waterproof jacket with waist drawcord

Titan is not the same warmth as the Fission SV. The Titan has 133g less insulation than the Fission SV. Also this is non-quilt Primaloft laminated to the nylon shell not continuous filament Thermatek.

Both are the same warmth, which is to say, super warm. Titan is more ski featured with a powder skirt.
