When the autumn chill rolls in, zip up the Arc'Teryx Men's Covert Vest and start sharpening your ice tools, because winter's almost here. And when the icy gales come through, wear this comfy Polartec Thermal Pro vest out to the pub over your favorite sweater or as second layer for skiing.
Bottom Line: Mountain performance built for casual conditions.
So I suffer from a relatively lean core with a long torso, wide shoulders, long arms, which makes buying modern fitting winter clothes nearly impossible. One of the upside of buying a vest is I just need to worry about fitting my chest and that the vest isn't too long nor too short. The small fits pretty nicely and tight (not too tight of course) to my ~38" chest, and doesn't do too bad a job hugging my waist (~30"). It is a bit long as others pointed out, which works well for me but may not for you. The construction of the vest is very good, the 3 zippers work very smoothly, which is something that I've always liked about Arc'teryx products. One major downer...it's made in China as about 10 Arc'teryx products I've bought during the past year have been...
I agree the collar doesn't want to stay folded down, but other than that there is not a lot to quibble about. The styling is more current than quirky, but the real appeal is in the details, and this vest offers more than most. The cloth trim on the outside of the pockets feels much sturdier than the typical fleece vest. The inside is lined (padded?) with a material that I assume is meant to wick moisture while maintaining warmth. Unzipping the pockets allows for venting of the torso. Wearing this under a light shell while hiking in low 20 degree temps was not a problem - no chills, and no overheating while pumping up the hills. I always thought of fleece as a poor man's insulator, but Arcteryx has changed my mind.
first, I love the longer length of this vest...I wear it around the house, it covers the waist without ridding up when you are reaching up for something..great zip, nice collar when fully zipped .. BUT...I have washed this vest twice already (following the instruction) cold, delicate wash and air dried..but its starting to pill now.. a little disappointed with this..my 20 bucks Columbia vest has been washed and washed and washed..always "high" dried over the year and still no pilling...this higher priced Arcteryx vest washed twice is already showing pilling.
To minimize pilling, wash the fleece inside out with mild detergent on delicate cycle in cold water without any fabric softener, and then, let it air/line dry.
I bought a medium vest due to it being sold at half-price. Since I, usually wear large, I was surprised how much room there was in the fit. I'm 6'6"-185 lbs. with 41 in. chest. Wearing it over a couple of thermal long sleeved underwear leaves me with a pretty good fit, not too tight around the neck.Good for layering your core, but the lack of technical features, such as hem chord cinches, banishes this vest to casual use as outerwear.
The styling is o.k. but it is unusually long compared to every other vest I have purchased. So it hangs out from underneath jackets. This is o.k. for an informal look but at work it doesn't look as good being so long. How long? It almost covers my butt. Fleece is different than most but I kind of like it. It lays down differently. It is about as warm as most fleece. Price is high compared to most vests If Arc'teryx wants to improve this upper $ vest they should shorten it and look into a wind resistant fleece fabric option too.
