Whether you need shell bottoms for an ultralight alpine climb or for a backpacking trip, the Arc'teryx Men's Alpha SL Pants fit the bill with their minimalistic design and low 9oz weight. Waterproof breathable Gore-Tex Paclite fabric gives these pants the performance to keep you dry through a mountain storm or West Coast downpour. The Alpha SL Pants include a gusseted crotch and highly articulated knees to provide total freedom of movement on steep, technical terrain and rocky sections of trail. Arc'teryx added three-layer instep reinforcements as an added bonus to anyone who has ever shredded a pair of pants with crampons. *Only Available for US Shipment.
Bottom Line: The Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pants prove that you don't have to sacrifice weather protection to save weight.
I was thinking about purchasing the Arc Teryx Alpha SL pant. I noticed the zippered leg opening was not a full side zip, but only from a little below the knee down. My question is whether when wearing light to medium weight hiking boots you can take the pants on or off without removing your boots?
I just bought these pants after reading the review on here. The answer is yes- I tried putting these on & taking them off with sneakers on. Then (just to make sure I covered every base for other readers here) I did it again with sandals, and again with my heavy-duty hiking boots. Result- I had no issues putting on & removing the Large size pants over my size 11 heavy leather boots. I am 6' tall, 180 lbs, with a 30" inseam, and 35" waist, and these pants fit me beautifully. My only complaint with the pants so far is the lack of pockets. This is offset though by the fact that these pants roll up to the size of a burrito, and only weigh 9 ounces.
I don't believe you would be able to. The zipper does come up to just below the knee and it is pretty narrow from there up to the crotch. I don't think that you would want to run a wet boot through there. I wear what are technically trail running shoes and I don't think I could put my foot through without damaging the pants (the paclite is pretty tough but I imagine you could tear it pretty easily with a shoe). It seems that the main advantage of the zipper is for venting.
These are great light weight rain pants. They breathe pretty well, and do a great job of keeping you dry, but they are more of a trail pant. I shredded mine bushwhacking, they now leak like a sieve, and that hurts at $200 a pair. I am 6' 5", 40" waist, weigh 275 lbs, and the knees are not cut right, considerable binding when going uphill.
Typical Arc'teryx quality seams, and overall finish, but the waist drawstring adjustment slide is completely bogus. The designer must have thought it would be cute to make it small, and hard to work with numb fingers. They lose two stars for that, and the price.
I mistakenly sent back the pair of large AArc'teryx Alpha SL pants. I want to have them again but it seems you don't have a large anymore...is that true? Please let me know. Thanks so much.
I cannot believe I haven't reviewed these sooner! I bought these from BC about a year ago. They have fantastic construction from the sealemd seams, to the measurement and sizing. I am 5'8 150 athletic build, waist 32 and the M was perfect. In fact Arc'teryx desgined these pants to be big enough in your normal size that accomadates for putting these over another layer. So I recommend sticking with whatever normal size you wear. Performance wise I used these in a tropical storm with high winds heavy-sideways rain and was dry as a bone. I also used these in about 8 inches of snow as my outer layer because I lost my insulated ski pants, but with some base layering, these pants were amazing, again dry as a bone, I sat in the snow and rolled around too, I was impressed. Lastly, if you're not convinced yet, I used these to cross a river in the Shenandoah Park, granted it was about 2-3 feet deep (thigh high), but I put these on and made sure my boots were ready too and headed across, again bone dry, I felt the cold of the fall water through them but no water made it through anywhere. Overall, buy on sale if you can I did about $130, but they are worth every penny, a must have in your outdoor arsenal!
These pants are the bomb. I wore them on a recent backpacking trip where we were hiking in a constant rain for 10 to 12 hours with temps in the mid 30s. They were totally dry, light, and fended off light briers and sticks without a scratch. I initially went with the XL to go over my pants, however, later I decided if I am going to wear these I'll just take my pants off because the LT was a much better fit for hiking in. I am 6'4", 215 with a 36" waist and the XL just kept falling down and the crotch was way too low to hike in.
I love these pants, they are flexible and they fit great! I use them primarily for ice climbing and they have performed awesome! They weigh nothing so when you pack them away they take up no space and ad hardly any weight to your pack.
