The Atomic Big Daddy is, well, the Big Daddy of the ski world. It's for big western mountains, big powder days, and big skiers. The 190cm Atomic Big Daddy is 125mm under foot. That's as wide as most fatties are at their tips! This is a seriously huge ski for serious powder days. If you like skiing all things big, then there is no other ski for you. This is the baddest pure freeride ski on the hill, but it probably won't be the only ski in your quiver. That means when it dumps big, your powder panic will double since you'll be itchin' to step onto the Big Daddy.
Bottom Line: The “who's your Daddy” jokes will get old—restrict yourself to one per day.
I found this ski to be a blast in trees, steeps and tighter spaces, it's nimble and easily smearable, but it still rips at speed in more open spaces. In real deep stuff the sweet spot is a bit small, you need some speed to get the tips floating. It's skiable everywhere, but ideally need 10-12"+ pow to make it worth it.
Took a few runs to get use to the massive waist, but now Im hooked. Powder turns are as youd expect, effortless. They like big turns but can manage small turns in powder without much effort. The thing that surprised me the most was how well they carve on packed snow, simply lay them on edge and hold on. Not an everyday ski for me but could be used anytime the snow is soft. 100% Satisfied!
I tested these as prototypes last year and was surprised how nimble and tolerable they were in big lines. I was skiing 1,500 ft restricted chutes at high speed with 6 inches of fresh and they didn't feel much different then my other 2005/6 Big Daddies. I did notice the girth when I had to throw down a McConkey Chute slide and scrub some speed- i.e. knee strain to put power down on an edge so far from my boot. But- these things are bomber. Still should have kept last years Big Daddy in production- best ski ever made for bombing big terminal lines. Wisco-X Crew- Ski fast and take chances
I've found all the previous reviews to be pretty accurate. I read them all B4 I got the ski, cuz there's nowhere to demo them out here. So I ski Alta/Bird and It hasn't snowed much in the last month since I got the skis. I took'em on a few test runs on crud and hardpack and was surprised how well they held an edge on the hard stuff. I switched Salomon B130 for B115 brakes, cuz the B15 (which were recommended) were annoying in the way the stuck out after you bent them to fit the ski.
Damn. Super floaty. Light weight. Torsionally stiff. Nice medium flex. Softer than last years BD's. Stiffer than anything K2 or Salomon make. I ski these things tele and they ski any size turn in pow and crud. Unless it's deep they don't like steep and tight too much. They ski big when it gets steep. Superfast and predictable. The boot centre mark I found to be 4-5 cm too far forward. It made them feel like they were mounted freestyle twintip. I wish they would have kept the old Big Daddy's. They were the best skis I have ever skied for mach silly skiing. My 2 cents.,
I agree with the above reviewers. It does take a little getting used to, but once you get dialed in, it rocks. I use it in the bumps, hardpack, and pow and only when it is icy do I use my other skis. I had them mounted on a track and enjoy them most mounted a few cm aft of center. Don't get this ski unless you are aggressive and like to ski fast. It doesn't come into its own until 20mph minimum. Just make sure your ski buddies ski fast or you will do a lot of waiting.
Got the big boys for Christmas and tried them 2 days. Skip the hard pack with these, but if you've got 6" new or better they rock. I'm a volunteer Patroler and get into the crud often for work, totaling out at near 250lbs with a full pack, they keep me afloat and having fun in stuff I'd never enjoyed before. They turn great on the steeps too. Just allow time for all the comments from your ski pals and everybody else, they draw a crowd!
Yeah, this ski is huge, stiff and fast, but if you can hold your own, don't be scared to step it up. I'm only 155lbs and have no problems skiing this guy. Once you go fat there is no turning back...plus this ski kills it in the crud.
