Atlas 11 Series Snowshoe - Women's - 2008

When you’re breaking trail and the slope gets steep, simply reach down and pull up the climbing bar on your Atlas Women’s 11 Series Snowshoes. This climbing bar reduces calf fatigue and puts your foot in a more natural position so you can weight the full snowshoe and take advantage of the sharp side rails instead of just the front crampons. The Elektra frame has a narrower waist and a tapered tail (as compared to the men’s shoe) so you don’t feel like your stride is hampered by clunky snowshoes, and the Spring-Loaded Suspension suspends the binding so your foot can step down at a natural angle even when you’re traversing a slope.

Bottom Line: Getting steep? Engage the climbing bar and hike on.

I want a pair of snowshoes that do not kick up snow on your back-side

I want a pair of snowshoes that do not kick up snow on your back-side or legs. I see complaints for the Series 9 and Series 10 both that say they do that. Have not seen complaints about the 11's however. So how does this shoe perform? We just want something good to go around our 2 mile trek in the woods and nature trail they do not plow in winter. Don't like cross country skis for trail when it goes to ice.

Nearly every Atlas shoe uses the spring-loaded suspension strap, which results in a similar response in all the shoes. I've found that the biggest determinant on whether or not you kick up snow is your own personal gait. I don't kick any snow with my Atlas shoes but my girlfriend does with her Elektras. I'd rent a pair if you can and find out. Even if they do, Atlas shoes are amazing on many other levels. Also, it seems like the longer the shoe the less likely it is to flick up during your stride.

Great snowshoes!

I had mine for two years and used them just about every chance I can get in the Winter. Yes, they do pelt snow up your back but not a big problem if dressed appropriately. The shoes are light, easy to put on and stays on, with great traction going up and down icy hills. I can't wait to use them again soon! Hightly recommended, just make sure you wear water-proof pants or at minimum, water-resistant ones - ie. cycling tights.

I am looking for an all around backcountry snowshoe, but would love to not have to buy another pair just to run in. Could you get away with running in these on occassion?

The Atlas 11 uses the same frame as the Atlas Run/Race Series but with the Atlas 11’s molded Wrapp Plus binding system and the aggressive tread for mountain hiking it will feel very awkward to run in. A better option may be to look at the Atlas Trail Walking Series 8 through 10.

snow kickers!

By:
January 7, 2009

I have the atlas, electra 11 series, and while they are great for climbing up hills and steep terrain(great grip and foot movement)they kick snow. My friend has the classic MSR's and she has no problems, but I am constantly being pelted with snow from my shoes and therefore have to watch what I wear, as it can soak through lighter layers when your stripped down to work hard. I am currently looking to buy a new pair of snowshoes even though I only purchased these last year!! I would not recommend then for long flat powder or trail shoeing!

you should contact a gearhead at Backcountry.A medium profile, insulated boot works best however as long as the binding can fit snugly, wear whatever feels most comfortable. Jeff is right on. You want something warm (insulated) but also fairly light. But really any boot is usable. I have even used sorels comfortably on a number of outings.
